This may be true but it doesn’t explain why they made the same mistake with Shadowlands. Locking the Covenants power (soulbinds, conduits and special abilities was such an obvious mistake from the start.
I also think that you are right about the +1000 Charisma bonus on the Artifacts and a similar misdirection happened with Alts.
The borrowed power grinds were terrible for alts (even other specs at times) but Legion had several good elements for alts that this encouraged Bliz to overlook the issues with the borrowed powers for alts.
Legion had alternative stories for every class each with a class mount. Not to mention the Artifact acquistion being part of this, with their +1000 Charisma bonus. Legion had rapid leveling with the Invasions and heirloom, each invasion would be 1.25 levels so 5 or 6 invasions along with some questing would max you out pretty quick.
Agreed. But a borrowed power system, with an AP like currency, can work if it can be earned in every activity. That way people can just play what they like and earn it.
This is true for most currencies I think.
Although when it comes to highly sort-after rewards (Power being the highest) then a cap is probably needed (either daily or weekly). Otherwise players will feel forced into doing everything. Then players burn out and start to resent the game or aspects of the game.
Also balancing needs to be done quite well or one particular activity will become the standard method of farming that currency and you end up with a lot of players doing The Maw of Souls 5 times a day as it’s the best way to get AP.
Sorry hard disagree here…
Yes if it was a job, and I wasn’t paying for the privilege of playing, then you can try and force me out of my comfort zone.
However it’s not, it’s a form of recreational activity, it’s main purpose is to be fun, and not give the player any stress or anxiety they don’t choose.
One man’s meat will always be another man’s poison. If it was up to me, people would be “forced” to RP, it’s right up in there in the genre title with “MMO”, and I’m convinced, if you only gave it a go, you’d love it…
But I am not a reliable source here, as I am a bit of a zealot.
All I ask, all I have ever asked is that you “allow” me to experience the world, to play the game how “I” want.
I get I might not get time sensitive raid rewards, but eventually allow me to stroll in there and see them when they aren’t the current expansion.
Generally speaking a fair chunk of the playerbase does not enjoy being forced into other areas they don’t enjoy. Even back in MoP when you had to go win a certain BGs to progress there were huge complaints. And that was a lot less effort than the essences required.
I don’t like PvP, you don’t force players into other areas of the game and expect them to suddenly like them. PvP players equally hate to be forced to do PvE. I have never really found PvP enjoyable, it was not my first rodeo. I didn’t like having to go do Arena and Battlegrounds for my essences grinds. Just like I didn’t like doing RBGs for my mage tower recolour and I didn’t like having to do PvP for the MoP legendary. I didn’t like having to do PvP activities with my orphan either but they have removed those more recently.
If there’s a cap there’s less of an issue of this happening, I think.
But there will ALWAYS be certain types of players who WILL go out of their way, even if it’s not what they really WANT to do, to get things the fastest/most optimal or easiest way. I don’t think the game should be balanced around those kinds of players, honestly.
100% true imo.
However, I wish they implemented a new mage tower challenge, or something similar. I dislike thorghast, because who the heck enjoys killing annoying trash mobs, that aren’t even designed to be aoe’d lol. I think something like those battle towers in kung fu movies with 1 boss on each etage and maybe a 1 week lockout per boss would be a nice mini game, if they add more and more floors throughout the expansion
