The Shadowlands were wasted

This is the second time I’ve seen this random comment, so I’ll say again that he was being set up to take on the role of Arbiter from the start of SL. Anyone who has played through the Kyrian campaign should have recognised that.

I agree with the Sylvanas stuff, though. I would have been more interested to hear more from Uther when Anduin broke the sword, seeing as it was him and Devos who threw Arthas into the Maw.

I get the impression they have written themselves into a corner to then bring out the emerald dream as the emerald dream and the shadowlands both orbit Azeroth in the cosmic chart.

This would be the perfect time to introduce the Emerald Dream. I think it’s going to be a patch like Argus rather than an expansion :frowning:

We still have 1 year of shallowlands dont forget!

The only thing I liked about shadowlands…
Was the cosmetic transmogs.
everything else was pretty trash tier.
I felt more like I was playing some weird disconnected game than warcraft. Sure the parts were there. But it felt more like force feeding us memberberries than actually trying to do anything on it’s own.

I got no reason to get invested into whatever the winterqueen or the primus is doing, because they’re just robots and we won’t see them again.

Member arthus?, member garrosh? oooh I member.
Hey hey member blood elf guy that drops the mount?

That’s pretty much the whole expansion to me.
That and useless crap to fill up my bags, and currencies. So many god dam currencies.

Not many people care about lore but we need to at least understand the motives and dangers of the villain. I watched avengers and had no clue who Thanos was and I still got the chills out of him. This is decent/good story writing. To at least be able to FEEL the villain.

Now the Jailer in the other hand… the ZM cutscene could have been added in the first cycle of Shadowlands at least…
I seriously dont remember anything from him during the gameplay. He said a few words, thats it. Is this the guy who pulled all the chains? He acts like a mini-boss in a classic world dungeon who randomly got a cutscene because some dev decided to troll with people.

I still had a bit of interest. The Argus hitting the Arbiter, Revendreths characters and the brokers of Zereth Mortis are the only three good parts of this expansion in my opinion. At least so good I actually started to like them.

I kept waiting for the Jailer to reveal more of his plans. To show us the First Ones. Why he wanted to unmake everything. How he found out about the flawed universe.
Did an arakkoa that worked with dark magic show him that when he judged its soul? Did the Jailer see something that he should not have seen in that arrakoas life?
AT LEAST ADD SOME CLEAR MOTIVATIONS?! He didnt even tell his siblings about this. They all seemed so confused about why the Jailer attacked them…

I had hopes. At least the ending cinematic would explain everything. No, just an useless cliffhanger. Cool. Noone escapes the Maw.
I like putting souls in to skeletons, hitting them with a hammer so every bone snaps and restore them over and over to break their minds.
I like seperating families and torturing them.
Just because I wanted to save the universe, dudes.

I’ve quite enjoyed SL, and i get what they were trying to do with the whole afterlife thing - but the whole thing seems very disjointed. Wasn’t a fan of the Maw or Torghast but the rest is pretty good. As always, the art and music teams nailed it.
Besides you gotta love the mechanical wombats in ZM

I believe she will be back but at the moment she has a lot to atone for honestly.

Not even that bad, there was 1000 people to save in darnassus for alliance if I’m not wrong? Say another 1500 died during the war afterwards because for some reason when the Alliance and the Horde go to war with eachother, almost nobody dies.

So let’s say 2500 souls she needs to save, at 20/quest that means 125 quest turnins. I’ve done way more than that this expansion, she could easily knock that out with 2 days grinding torghast layer 1.

I realised it was wasted as soon as I knew we had 4 islands that weren’t surrounded by dense swirling mist into which we could step and end up on another. Nor could we fly underneath the flying places and find another layer down there. We didn’t even get random day/night cycles (or maybe we do in Maldraxxus but it’s 99% day so nobody notices. Also nobody wants to spend time in Maldraxxus).

We didn’t even get to see mobs dissolve into a cloud of anima that slowly reformed and made another mob an hour later, which led us to the “true death” that makes Shadowlands feel like absolutely the worst afterlife ever. It’s not an afterlife, even, it is a second life, but all the same physical rules apply. How terribly mundane.

This was the opportunity to throw away all the laws of physics and expectation and produce something genuinely unexpected.

But as the OP says; wasted.

As for Korthia, I’m sorry, but when players are clearly fatigued by the 9.0 Maw, who thought a dull, brown wasteland was a good idea? Nobody went there by choice, and Blizz knew we wouldn’t, hence character power being tied to the grind there.

ZM is better though. It’s lush, it’s enjoyable. I occasionally go there just for something to do for 20 mins, and when I do, it was my choice, so I enjoy the experience more than if I was being mandated to go.

Anyway, I’ll be happy to come back to Azeroth in Dragonflight. If the designers aren’t going to give us a really otherworldly feel, they’re better not raising expectations by saying they will.

I agree that it’s wasted but I feel like all the negatives of SL still heavily outweigh all the positives that were or could have been. As such SL is still at the end of the good + bad sum a big fat bad.

Denathrius was more compelling then the Jailor yes, that’s the only positive thing you’ve mentioned for which I don’t have a ‘but’ ready
Nice transmogs yes but the acquisition through anima power is just a hamsterwheel that’s designed to turn you into a metric for them to offer to their shareholders who only see the world in (very unfun) numbers. I don’t know a lot of players who farmed anima hard that are still enjoying content today
Beautiful environments but none of them feel at home in the warcraft franchise
Nice raid to bad everyone was pulling their hair out over the droprates of… well… everything in the game

I outright disagree with the last one so that one doesn’t get a yes, but

  • Bain was thrown off a cliff in the Maw, Upon his rescue he goes to Oribos to… sit in a corner… on the ground
  • Upon rescueing Thrall, Thrall goes to… sit in a corner next to Baine… on the ground
  • Jaina is the literal coldsteel the hedgehog of the IP (You never help her, you don’t even rescue her from Torghast, you just wake her up from a mid torture nap at best, she frees herself, blinks over to you, oneshots the boss which the game has to keep on 1 HP for the last 10 seconds and 'heh, nothing personell kid’s you by poking you with a stick which is all she needed to do to teleport herself to safety)
  • Its obvious for Sylvanas that they tried to twist her into redeeming, people say that Afrasiabi ‘sabotaged’ Sylvanas by making her evil, but if you ask me it’s the current team that ‘sabotaged’ the rest of the games lore by trying to sell Sylvanas as redeemable at all cost (in this case at the cost of all existing afterlife lore before SL)
  • Sylvanas punishment is weighed heavier then the salvation of those she has to rescue for her punishment (they’re only sending a single person in to retrieve them, I know time works different in the shadowlands but I reckon you still experience some passing of time)
  • Horde leadership for some reason hanging out with alliance players
  • Alliance leadership for some reason hanging out with horde players
  • Tyrande… Man, does anything even need to be said here?
  • Lor’themar is caring too much about alliance leadership again (Genn) which makes this alliance flirt #I-lost-count
  • Pelegos I can imagine is only really interesting if you played Kyrian

Any characters I didn’t name are too forgettable to remember
