Unpopular Opinions

Yeah, pretty much. The reason Game of Thrones comes up so much when people mention this is because there was a time where you couldn’t walk two steps without bumping into Byrion Bannister and other thinly veiled copies who absolutely refused to RP as if they were in Warcraft.

Dark times…

I think this was a double-edged sword to be honest, while there certainly was direct inspiration taken. People very much jump the gun a lot in regards to it. If i roleplay a grey eyed man with somber coloured gear who lives on the fringe of society and is largely anti-social to most there’s an equal chance it could also simply be a ranger from Lord of the Rings.

It very much became a way for roleplayers to just do a big :poop: on anything that leaned towards low fantasy, IMO.

That much I can’t deny. People tend to raise the “lolGoTRPer” thing way too quickly even if someone just wants to be some crestfallen footman from Westfall. I haven’t seen a blatant GoT copy for a long time, I’m quite surprised it lingers in people’s minds so much.

A worrying amount of people did not get this memo.

Incidentally, Forsaken don’t belong in the Horde - especially not after the events of BfA.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with that either. We see in the novels that the Church used to distrust and implied to have lynched mages in the old times when mages didn’t kowtow to their holy authority as a power play. Characters like Duncan in Day of the Dragon still believed in that mindset as of the Second War, even if by the time of the Third War the Church has changed its official tune to that of blessing and sponsoring mages who would use their magic to advance the Light’s Will (i.e. help others). Not to mention the Light-fearing superstitious folk of Drustvar literally lynched people who are suspected of being witches without fair trials.

Characters with fringe beliefs are always going to exist and the characters we RP don’t always have to represent the mainstream. It would be really boring if everyone were yes men who agreed 100%.

But at the same time it shouldn’t be taken to the same level of extreme found in other settings. The Circle Magi did not initiate a rebellion and there is no Mage-Templar war in WoW, nor is the Church of the Sacred Flame’s tenets adopted in WoW. We are in neither Thedas nor The Continent.

The two-faction system has always hamstringed the story and really strained it. I was hoping Shadowlands got rid of it as a mechanic entirely, to be honest. It was the original idea for WoW anyway.

geting rid of the faction was the og idea?
got any source on that?

not because I don’t want to believe you, but I heard a few high tales without a spine to back them up

Same! I would have loved for the two mega-factions to dissolve and for any disputes to be between individual races/nations.

I even had high hopes for X-Faction PvE.

An orc in that down in Duskwood.

Edit: It’s funny how you can really see the Warcraft 3 engine and upscaled models.

There were Gnomes in Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness, though…

So they’ve been longer in Warcraft then most other races!

Yeah Warcraft 2 had submarines and planes. The entire “uhhh sweaty, it’s new to WoW and really bad…” is an absolute trash take.

I am not sure if it was reforged or just part of the old version but I think gnomes were riding in the flying machines back in warcraft 3

Unsure if popular or unpopular but here goes.

Monk should have been pandaren only class.

Demon hunters were a bad addition to the game.
