The only world design thing from the past i really miss is the sense of a single big continent, zones are too separate, like they’re designed separately and then glued together (In TWW and SL with tunnels, in DF with mountain ranges hedging them off), instead of a single coherent landmass.
Ehm… No it doesn’t?
Overal new zones look MUCH better than old ones. Now, certain themes and aesthetics might not appeal to a particular person, but objectively the zones are incredibly well made (in general - there are a few exceptions).
I do disagree. I don’t like Classic’s overly ‘scratchy’ textures. They’re ugly.
But that is of course subjective, so it’s fine you feel otherwise.
Have you looked at old zones from the sky? They REALLY look like they’re just patched together with highly unrealistic barriers between them.
Yep, for me all new maps are… boring? In old zones i look around, being curious and asking myself “what was here?” or “what Story is behind this” for example.
I always thought it’s because in retail there is no threat in the open world, because the player is god and no mob can hurt you. While it’s still one of the reasons WoW isn’t immersive anymore for me, i still like to explore the old zones, even the mobs aren’t a threat either there.
And i can’t really tell why. Blizz managed to do better world building with less stuff/models and with older graphcis then they do now.
I tried to speak about small details and textures, not the view from aeroplane. Yes, the overlay is definitely better. Mainly thanks to flying and then dragonflying. But the small details are missing. The depth in textures. Connection between objects and ground…
I strongly disagree. New maps have more intricate details nowadays in general.
That doesn’t mean I’m a fan of every new zone, but even for zones I don’t like I can’t deny that they’re packed with small details and generally feel ‘lived in’.
Now, for the time the old zones were nice, don’t get me wrong. But they aged very poorly imo.
I believe that nostalgia might be at play. If I look at myself; there’s movies or series from the 1980’s that I grew up with that I love and that I make me think 'they don’t make ‘m like this anymore’. But if I step back and look at them objectively… There’s glaring issues with most of them. It’s just that I am okay with that. I still love them and embrace those issues. But I can’t deny that they’re flawed, from an objective standpoint.
I am very thankful for your contribution. We all will agree that old zones had some problems, but so has the new ones also. They are just different.
My topic was about depth of textures and therefore many things connected with it.
I am saying that new ground textures are just very simplistic and the old ones were better. That doesn’t mean all the zones were better in my opinion. But the textures and the connections between textures, since they were smaller in scale (Textures) so they fit better each to another.
I would also appreciate more supported opinions. I mean its not enough just to say you are not right guys. The new ones are better. Just give us some examples, some comparison, we can see etc.
