I’m not convinced Blizzard in 2025 is capable of making new games tbh. I would like to see some non-MMO, non-RTS games in the Warcraft or Starcraft universes but I am skeptical of Blizzard’s abilities.
I’d love to see some version of Mount & Blade; Warcraft edition! I’d argue it would allow for a good immersive experience of being some poor schmuck in the army of whichever faction you fancy, facing off the enemy. There’s room for growing through the ranks, earning command of your own units which can consist of different types of fighters based on the Lore.
Factions could be the likes of the Alliance and Horde or perhaps even race-based, with plenty of cities and landmasses for the picking regarding inspiration. Perhaps people could become neutral mercenaries instead, or recruit non-player races like in the old Warcraft tabletop RPG. Then there’s the Scourge, the Burning Legion, etc. Take your pick!
And if we’re taking it down the really ambitious route we could include naval combat and travel across the seas! And then I’m not even touching on the importance different mounts could play (flying/speed/tanky/breath attack), equipment and all sorts of other stuff to pile on the tactical jazz.
I feel like a problem with BG3 style CRPG in WoW is how bloated the story is. Or rather… it would be a problem with expectations. There are so many cultures… so many classes and specs that players would want to see that I do not honestly believe that any team could deliver.
Could they make a great game? Oh absolutely. But at the cost that not everything would fit into the game. So the question is - would you like to buy Warcraft CRPG where X race, Y Class etc are NOT included. Where X, Y, Z etc are whatever you main.
I feel like it be the opposite issue.
all the years of wow, with the world scaled down, it all feels very condensed, is there a lot of lore? sure but not so much you cannot summarize the important bits to a newbie in less than an hour
What warcraft lacks more than anything is sense of scale if you ask me.
Oh for sure! World should feel like a big big place. You dont walk between zones in 5 mintues. More like 5 days… at least.
But the point still stands. Such cRPG wouldn’t and shouldn’t try to cover all the bases. But lots of people will be expecting that their thing will make it into the game.
The same can be said for Baldur’s Gate 3 in the first place. The Forgotten Realms setting that it is based in is far vaster than BG3 depicts and has a whole lot of cultures that are never even touched upon in BG3. The Red Wizards of Thay, the elves of Myth Drannor and Evermeet and Evereska, the witches and barbarians of Rashemen, the knights of Tethyr and the jungles of Chult, all of it takes a backseat to the story that BG3 wants to tell, centred on a very specific area.
As long as the name and the premise makes it clear that the game has a limited scope, people will be a lot more accepting. People only grumble about World of Warcraft’s poor representation of cultures and races because it’s the World of Warcraft and it does feature all of Azeroth, which it should try to depict equally and fairly when possible.
If it’s just called something like “Lions of Stormwind,” then I’d fully expect a story either based in Stormwind City or about patriots of the kingdom of Stormwind, not something elf-centric or orc-centric. There might be some initial sadness due to one concept being chosen over others, but once expectations are set, no one should look at such a project and be grumpy that it doesn’t let you play an orc.
