Mmmm, well, that is true - although wushu does not translate to kong fu. They’re synonyms in Chinese with two different translations (one of the translations makes it specific that it is Chinese)

do you speak chinese / lived in china ?

Barely. Not enough that I can play World of Warcraft in Chinese (I did try) but enough to order food and find my way around and construct some reasonably complex sentences. HSK2 is passed, HSK3 is within reach. I was actually going to go to a lesson in 12 minutes but unfortunately I’ve gone ahead and become ill :frowning:

But I speak English quite well and happen to know there’s a big difference between martial arts and kong fu in English, and kong fu is very obviously the English way of saying gong fu specifically - it is quite literally the same pronunciation.

EDIT: And yeah no surprise that kongfupanda was taken as a name
>_>
<_<

i sometimes when im bored i search for foreigners trying to teach my language on youtube. its hilarious that they THINK they know because they lived a few years here, they have so many basic mistakes its laughable.

then, no offense, we both cant say we know the chinese language.
ya, i went to chinese class for 1 year, read about their culture and in wikipedia. does it mean i know their local way of speech ? no.

No offence taken.

I met a guy at work who was an English teacher in China for 2 years and he came back and didn’t understand a single bloody word. Don’t even know how that happens honestly. I mean surely you’d just look around and listen in on a conversation and pick something up - it’s almost unavoidable I’d think.

I did say barely. I did not claim I speak Chinese at a level where I’d converse fluently, absolutely not.

But I do know fluent English, and I know kung fu is a direct translation of gong fu - that word specifically. :stuck_out_tongue:

english cant translate everything well.
dont forget, china is a very large country. two languages can be found there, cantonese and mandarin. words mean different in different regions.
every place i read, wushu always related directly to chinese martial arts. including hanzi. and thats enough for me.

If you say wushu in the context of an English sentence, definitely. My point is that if you say martial arts in an English sentence, it doesn’t.

And yeah, there’s a lot of Chinese languages, I know. I don’t know how many are officially recognised but I’ve heard of at least 8 as well as Mongolian and Tibetan.

But this isn’t really about Chinese - it’s really about English more than anything. When you’re trying to translate into English you’re really looking for an English word that means the same as the word you have an mind, and kung fu very specifically means gong fu. If you say wushu you’ll definitely evoke the same meaning for an Englishman (assuming he knows the word, which he probably doesn’t) but if you translate it into English you get martial arts, and then he’ll start including judo and karate and wrestling and aikido, sumo, jujitsu, taekwondo, etc. Maybe even wrestling, boxing, capoeira, etc.

Truth. Used to be that a GM would unlock names on accounts that were demonstrably inactive, but thos practices were abandoned years ago.

Well, actually the y is silent…
So, it’s pronounced as Vanka
But if you knew that and was resembling to a well know celebrity daughter who was the former US president. Mr. Donald Trump daughter Ivanka.
She who’s the daughter- wife of trump then maybe, it does sound dirty

I’m happy with this one I have. It’s a real name too, of a long, long dead priest who was buried not too far from where I live.
