What was roleplay like back in the day?

The worgen packs, now that’s some nostalgia! Also, I was that worgen DK :smirk:

You forgot the worgen biker gang.
Yes that was a thing. No I don’t get it either.

The worgen what??? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

biker gang. vroom vroom.

There’s hundreds if not thousands of random ideas people had that have long, long been forgotten.

Roleplaying in Stormwind would be a continual process of characters walking between Cathedral Square and the Pig and Whistle in Old Town. You could roleplay as people walked along the streets around you.

Duskwood was haunted by The Bane, a cult of purposefully cruel and insidious monsters. Entire armies’ worth of guilds would sweep across the forest, trying to defeat them, only for them to always manage to escape and slink away.

Before Game of Thrones was popular, many characters based themselves around the earlier Assassin’s Creed games. Hidden blades were popular. Game of Thrones was less influential than comic books and other video games. Things had a more steampunkish feel.

House guilds were popping up left and right. SW was full of them.

It was probably the most detached era we’ve been through. I’m glad RP did find its own face again since.

I ran a guard guild in Stormwind.

There were worgen in Fedoras using growth potions, guns and the pointiest armor they could find everywhere, constantly breaking into and out of jail.

It was more earnest, I think. A lot more individuals and guilds alike seemed willing to just jump into things without excessive planning.

I do not think that much has changed beyond the server population taking a hit over time due to various factors. There’s still plenty of good and some bad but for the most part Argent Dawn is a pretty great place.

The second part of this is still relevant tbf

I miss the street gangs wearing Master’s Hats. I think in large part because it wasn’t based, far as I know, on any existing property or franchise. It was an emergent, quasi-realistic street culture. Every human society has collections of young men who loiter around, trying to look tough. This was Stormwind’s version of that.

I used to do a lot of RP in the Ruins of Gilneas during Cata. There’s nothing like a worgen running up to you in Running Wild and hitting you with a /bite to start off the day. I could never pin down if they were supposed to be feral or not because some of the pack guild worgen came to the sermons I ran at Light’s Dawn at the time. :cat:

They just hadn’t been taken for their daily walk yet.

Also something else I miss other than mailboxes, are good old tournaments done the /duel way. Had a blast hosting a number of them ages ago, and spectating PvP arena and /duel events by other people. These days all the tournaments seem to be /roll based emote fights, which is fine, but I don’t find them as exciting to spectate for an hour or two.

I stopped doing them myself because over time it felt people got more and more competitive about them OOC, and it was always a bit of work figure out what specs and classes should be allowed to participate, which talents / abilities / items to allow or not etc.

Wonder if I’m not alone feeling it’d be great to see some /duel based tournaments again? I understand why the community has gravitated to /rolls, but /duel made such fun visual spectacles.
