What's the biggest lore mistake Blizzard has ever made?

And then there’s Garrosh who “dies in the afterlife” (???)

Now this might seem obvious since i’m posting on a Night elf character, but burning Teldrassil.

Doing that caused some short-lived hype for a mediocre expansion, but it blew a huge hole in the story, even with the Horde (Half-heartedly) deposing her, and now in DF everybody suddenly being friends, while it was practically the best option (Playerbase is lopsided as heck, especially at the high-end content bracket), it feels incredibly awkward and sudden, all because BfA drove tensions up so high with the destruction of a major city. (And the rendering temporarily uninhabitable of another)

Not to mention the 6-year plod to the end of the following storyline, everybody complaining “Oh, not more Night elf content!” incessantly, and even increased Jingoism among the players, the whole Sylvanas/Jailer arc was a disaster that ultimately, as a story, fell flat (It was the Jailer doing stuff all along! EVERYTHING!), such a huge lore mess, for what?

Garrosh being made Warchief, it made no sense whatsoever lorewise.

Honorable mention to the fact that everyone said “Nah it’s just Gul’dan let’s let him go” when he was freed from the portal at the beginning of WoD.

Thrall losing his elemental powers after his duel with Garrosh also seemed extremely stupid because it came out of nowhere and absolutely no one could have guessed it if not told.

Will take years or only once the social collective of care bears and my little pony comes to end.

How they did Arthas and Garrosh in Shadowlands. So stupid.

The people who wrote Shadowlands had no idea about warcraft 3 or warcraft overall.

Shadowlands should have been Legion on steriods. I mean its the land of the dead you had all the amazing characters of the past to work with. :man_facepalming:

Gets me angry just thinking about it.

Adding “draenei” to the Alliance, and Blood Elves to the Horde.
Draenei got retconned, I preferred them when they were the surviving remnants of a broken race. Which made them badass. We could’ve had broken Draenei on the Horde.

Also how the new writers just diminished Arthas to nothing, like they purposely spit in our faces, and the way they handled Garrosh.

If the Draenei were what we saw as broken Draenei in BC (Or worst, the wretched husks they called Draenei in that corner of Swamp of sorrows back in Vanilla), nobody would have played one, people preferred (And still do) “pretty” races.

That the Blood elves became so popular (Probably the single most popular race in the game) was purely because of that, they’re the pretty race in the more interesting faction. (I’ll readily admit that the humans, and by extension the Alliance, are the most simplistic and dull fantasy cliché conceivable)

I agree about Arthas, the whole cinematic had a real “And now stop asking about him!”-vibe about it.

As for Garrosh, he went out how he lived (Once he got out of his little funk in BC-Nagrand, anyway), axe in hand, ready to fight anything.

A good take for once. Sylvanas never should have been warchief

Scrap that nobody, because I would play one. Definately would make a rogue.

Hardly counts since they were introduced in the expansion we lost them. Ik they were there lore wise but still

Okay but my point stands. If one side loses something so does the other of the exact same type and amount. It’s just not good (:

Shadowlands!

Fine…

The enormous retcon of Arthas and generally the Lich King myth and lore really bothers me to this day. Sounds silly, it’s just a video game blablabla I know… I’ve been maining DK for many years, and played WC3 all the way back when it first came out… To see this story get such a bad treatment all for the sake of some expendable and utterly forgettable villain just hit me real hard. Man I was so close to get a helm of domination tattoo had this real talented artist lined up too… Maybe it was for the best what can I say…

On top of that Shadolwnads lore really ruins all religion of the entire universe. Doesn’t matter if you’re an orc shaman, human faithful to the light, night elf druid, a tauren with ancestral worship etc… You literally all go to the same freaking spirit juice machine… Just utterly terrible! It’s just heaven, hell, purgatory with extra steps. So lame.

Yeah I feel ya… At least it felt cool for a while and we got some sick tmogs… But I feel the whole xalatah arch is them trying to scavenge some of those ideas. I feel more of these could be reintroduced to the story in a meaningful way.

Some of the biggest ones for me besides the entirety of Shadowlands:

  • The Horde suddenly growing from a ragtag bunch of misfits into an unstoppable superpower at the beginning of Cataclysm, magically getting thousands of soldiers and weapons out of thin air.
  • Malfurion not doing anything while the Horde invaded his home during Cataclysm
  • Orcs not needing demon blood to go and commit atrocities during Warlords. The longest time we have been told that it was due to the demon blood that Orcs committed several genocides. Warlords retconned this into “all Orcs have a bloodlust they need to fight constantly”, basically returning an otherwise interesting race back to their Monster Handbook origin.
  • Tauren not just straight up leaving the Horde after the burning of Teldrassil. This was an act that would normally have been unacceptable for any Tauren (except maybe the Grimtotem), yet Tauren stayed to “protect the Horde”.
  • In a similar vein, characters like Rexxar or Voss pretending that defeating the Alliance was important and how JAina can’t keep getting away with her dastardly deeds. You started this entire mess, you are the evil oppressive force Jaina is defending the Alliance against.
  • Voss joining the Forsaken, though that might just be a pet peeve of mine. It just feels so forced to drum up hype for a faction.

Anyways, I am sure there are more. But this is my list for now :dracthyr_yay_animated:

Making content for Hardcore Raiders for years and listening to the 1% of players too much whilst neglecting their core audience!

Everything after bfa tbh

Well hopefully the games story will be improved on and is not a fairytale like df story, From what I’ve seen the story is more grim on the next expansion even though I’m not a huge fan of dwarfs.

Yeah, the reason is Tyrande was rude to Thalyssra.

There are a bunch of ridiculous overreactions involved in allied races picking sides. The Lightforged defeated the Legion with the players’ (thereby both factions) aid, winning a war of cosmic significance, then join the Alliance because, well, the regular spacegoats are there and the regular spacegoats have joined the purple pointy-ears in being upset about some felled trees in Ashenvale.

The big brain jailer was simply a puppet of his brother the Primus, Sylvanas was just there to bring us into the picture so we could help the Primus get complete control with the sparkling new circlet of domination and set up himself as an ally to unruly meat things that might free prisoner nr. 1 Azeroth the menace of the first ones.

At least in my head anyway x3

Edit: damn im supposed to complain about something uuuugh ok i think Garrosh being a anti hero in the stone talons questline shouldve been a defining moment for him, he was done dirty xS

Forcing Yrel to be some sort of light fanatic in the Maghar recruitment.

Fyrakk,Iridikron and Vyranoth should have stayed togheter as a force of nature for future expansions, instead they made the band to fall apart and with time to become forgotten. To see them working togheter made me very good vibes,a better touch with the wow characters.Oh lock is the Primal Incarnates, what they are up to?What they are doing? It makes the lore feel alive, playable, but like what they did with them it just makes everything so blunt, like a dead game, nothing keeps the game as lore alive more then 3 crazy dragons doing whatever they want in the world.Blizzard is destroying everything they touching.Too bad, they will keep doing these with other char. aswell as they did before.

When they hired Golden. Might not be exactly a lore mistake but rather the source of several.
