I never will forgive them for turning combat into a pirate. A PIRTE. A RNG PIRATE. Like what were they smoking.
A cosmic RNG pirate now
But now mobs are more clustered so if you nuke one of them other two will kill you.
Rogue is a lot more popular than you think, you just don’t see them.
I started with rogue and used to love them, but after trying other classes it really seemed like it was trying to force a fantasy that wow game mechanics can’t really accommodate. On average level if you’re not focusing too much, you’re just very squishy, if you get too much damage you have to eat to recover fast in world content (something NOBODY does any longer), stealth is fun in theory but when you think about it, why should you plan how to attack and pick your enemies with caution when you can just be any other class and brute force your way through things in half the time. You don’t really have benefits aside for avoiding combat, but that is only an issue within closed environments, and even then other classes have access to potions and engineering for limited time stealth, which is more than enough to skip things you don’t want to fight - should you ever want it, since the whole game revolves around fighting.
What’s more, stealth is even used in combat. It is useless in world content once you come out of it, which gives you a good first hit and then you’re done with it - it’s not like a stealth game where you get an insta kill or something, and you can’t re-stealth and attack since mobs will disengage. But even if you can in group content, I find it really stupid: the whole purpose of vanish should be to run away when things go south but no, you now use it to use more starter attacks and pump your damage - losing its original fantasy utility, so it basically turns into just another buff, as if rogues didn’t have too many already.
All of this, and you don’t even have an edge in damage against something like a warrior, or even worst at times, a Druid or a paladin. Like I would be fine with all of it if rogues had an insane damage, making it hard to land a good hit but once you make it, it really counts, but it doesn’t. And if you don’t really have that much of an edge even against something like a warrior (and I could argue warrior is better at everything and is even more tanky, save for immunities) at the end of the day the only outstanding question is… why? Why should you gimp yourself so much for just a class fantasy?
Then again this reasoning could be applied for all the classes and one could argue that there’s no reason to play anything beside Druid or paladin, but atleast other classes are not that hugely disadvantaged, you can still gimp yourself a little bit for a gameplay and fantasy you like more (and why not, with some effort even land top results), but ultimately as a rogue lover my final thought is that rogues really aren’t mechanically suited to fit wow as they are now. And devs don’t look like they really care, so… it’s there to let wow have a thief class, but sometimes I feel like it doesn’t really serve any purpose now. Maybe in classic wow it had, but no longer.
opens fantasy game
“im gonna summon demons”
“im gonna heal my allies with nature magic”
“im gonna wield the powers of undeath and raise the dead”
“im gonna carry weapons twice my size and rampage through people”
what about you, op?
“im gonna carry 2 knives and stab people in the bum bum”
just isn’t that interesting to most people
because they made combat (outlaw) into a apm spec and Assa into a dot on steroids and then u have SUB with cds like a truck running lose
I cracked out my Assa rogue this expac as my first toon to run through the campaign.
Frankly I love it. Squishiness appears to have gone off a bit, it’s been cutting through elites and rares , and 3 mob packs without too much trouble. Bloody good for mining stuff / treasures guarded by mobs with a sap here or there.
I do tend to stun lock mobs if I can, and in pack I try and spread rupture and garrotte around those mobs, and hope the dots and an evasion will see me good.
I’m not finding the death stalker hero talents too boring, I’ve got a WA that shows me stack count so I can optimise finishers. SnD might as well be passive now apply it with a single point, then it never falls off as it is refreshed by envenom, and shiv it very easy to interleave in as well.
Maybe it helps being a NElf with Shadowmeld as another means of vanishing.
Level 3 delves end bosses are a little tricky, even with level 9 brann healing.
I’m no raider or M+ runner, and that is probably why rogue is in a really good place for me right now.
Someone said about Pick pocketing. Hotwax from Kobolds is a nice 2hr damage buff off the back of a nice quest chain.
Right now I can’t find anything not to like about rogue for my needs.
There are people who do, but not many. Hence the unpopularity
Hey…who said im unpopular?
But yeah, its been mention a bit when it comes to challanges. But as an alchemist my supply of healthpots, peacebloom and nogginfogger is near endless,so life aint so bad
hic
I just don’t like the fantasy very much. I think they are fine for what they are though. They got teleports and hooks and a few acrobatic moves. You have to be into the ninja/thief/pirate/assassin thing.
I am more into flashy stuff.
Rogue is fairly complex among the melee classes. That and/or a high APM turns away quite a few people I imagine.
Personally I’m fond of rogue, but I’d be lying if I said rogue was my main in TWW so far. The hero talents just aren’t all that impressive visually.
Rogues have way too many damned buttons to press in PvE and they have to use them way too often
'Member when people just had to just build points and then spend them?
Classes that change the main action bar based on stealth or Form are also more complex to set up keybinds for.
Feral druids have a lot of the same problems
PvE gameplay.
-
Rogue requires set up for their combos
-
They have more buttons to press than most classes
-
They have no pets
-
They lack defensive abilities
-
They are amongst the squishiest of the 13 classes
These things combined makes Rogue a very unfriendly class for solo PvE and content, which is what most people play.
I would have said that maybe the rubbish hero talents have something to do with their lack of play this expansion, but then that wouldn’t explain why Hunter is top 2 when they also got shafted in that department.
I do like Rogue. I like the transmogs and I did kinda enjoy playing Assassination in the first half of DF. But I feel like the evolution of the design of the game has left it in the dust somewhat. They have so much utility that was fantastic in vanilla, but much of it has become obsolete, and the class just doesn’t get as much love as Paladin, Warlock, Mage ect. The hero talents are further proof of this.
I think it has several reasons.
- People seem to really dislike the leveling part, so a lot of them stop playing before they reach max level
- It could be challenging to execute them as rotation and have a lot of not straight forwards abilities like blind, sap, shroud, even vanish cheap/kidney packs as other classes have
- They are not very desired in Mythic+. They don’t bring any Buffs, BL, CR, Buff, Mass CC, Grips and such. They are mostly there for pure dmg (Poisons do exist but most people don’t think about them
- They have several frustrating ability rotation. Such as: Rogues need stealth before a pack, otherwise Rogues dmg goes down. Sub cooldowns doesn’'t line up. Outlaw could be RNG heavy
I think I could make the list even longer. But I actually love how the Rogue plays in terms of feeling. Being stealthy, high burst coming out of stealth, really cool looking gear, I even like when it is complex rotation (Not frustrating tho) and that is what makes me stick through it.
I just hope they maybe add something more to Rogues that makes us more needed, in dungeons
I actually started in TWW with rogue, Assass rogue is a lot of fun, it flows great for single targets, but it was feeling a bit rough around the edges for leveling.
I was doing high damage, but also taking a lot of damage and pulling mob packs was overly busy, therefore it doesn’t make the best leveling experience. I had to just pull mobs one by one or in small groups, it got boring and repetitive.
I decided to fool around on frost mage and it flowed so much better through questing that I ended up just finishing the campaign with it. The control is amazing, damage is amazing, a bit squishy but so many tools and ways to kill things. It made the experience so much more enjoyable.
Rogue is great, but really one dimensional. You’ve got to really enjoy that niche.
They need to give everyone a 4th spec, starting with the 4 classes stuck in dps only <.<
I have been saying that for 20 years now
I would even argue that every class should have a Tank and a Healspec in addition to their DPS-Speccs. Like Druid.
I heard that Combat/outlaw was a tank spec during the WoW vanilla beta. Same with Enhancement
For me it’s just that the class fantasy is boring. You have edgier and more fun leather and melee classes and melee.
Demon Hunters who consume and turn into demons > thieves and assassins
