Why WoW's Gearing System Hurts PvP Enjoyment

the problem with makin comparisons to those expansions is that wow changed drastically. back then the world was filled with people and the game had more to offer then just endgame. nowadays theres simply just endgame thats enjoyable and thats a huge problem for new players. if they get max level and full honor gear and with that get blasted in seconds by fully geared its bad. alot of em cba and just quit bc they think the game is bad.
reduce the ilvl difference by half, prevent premade syncing and also remove these dumb bg potions and it will have a positive effect.

You just described the wotlk pvp experience you know? Get to 80, craft a gear with the only money you got, get in bg where a full gladiator-set player will 3shot you, repeat until you get full honor gear in like 2 weeks just to stand a chance.
The difference with now? Players are crybabies that want everything and fast.

absolutely and the dilusions of people who are not aware of the instant gratification paradox is staggering.

i used to think the same as u guys. having the game unbearable for new players aint the way tho. and lowering the ilvl gap doesnt take away from the progression since u still want the best gear.

like said wow as a whole back in the day was way different. and even if the entrance back then also was rough doesnt mean its good for current times.
its hard for wow to atrract new players in genral nowadays and for pvp especially since nobody will put up with this huge powergap when not already in love with the game.

crafting gear is rly bad, knowledge for profession is even worse

gearing isn’t terrible
but the IL gap between gear and no gear each season is far too big

True, the question for me is “what are the kind of players we want to attract?”. Because honestly, since the game was made more accessible and “easy” WoW has been on a decline. It’s like the Elden Ring discourse going on right now, if you are familiar. Simply put: Elden Ring reached a ton of new players, a thing that the old Dark Souls could never do. These players tho want an easier game, destroying the core concept of “souls like”. WoW was never accessible because it was challenging, but what do you know, challenging is fun, easy is boring. People want easy games, but then get bored and leave, which is modern WoW for you.

How’s it anti casual? I’m a casual player and it’s definitely not anti casual…

I dont get why people think gearing should be an agonizing concept n how that would be a good design to begin with. If i take a break from WoW n return mid season where conquest cap is already very high its going to be a terrible experience to catch up on said conquest because the relevant conquest gains are all from ranked gamemodes which you dont want to partake in unless you´re fully geared already.

In my case its whatever on a personal level, i only play 1-2 characters per season anyways n ive been around long enough to just suffer through it without thinking about it.

If you however look at the perspective of a new player who decides to dip his toes in PvP where ontop of not knowing how to play his class, he is also dealing 40% less damage and taking 40% more due to sheer statstick differences. Since some people wanted to compare it with other games we can do that too, Its like giving better CSGO players aim assist or make pro players in league start the game at lvl 6.

Ontop of this, new players might not know what class they actually want to play n therefor want to try out multiple, its impossible to even get a feel for a class prior to being fully geared due to how absurdly big the difference is between geared n not geared. If someone tried introducing me to a new game n told me “oh yeah, just spend a week dying like a trashmob so some fully geared saltwater berserk MM hunter can feel good about himself n you might enjoy the game and class you decided to pick” i wouldnt stick around all that long.

Either remove the “daily win” crap n make all BG´s give conquest every win equal to the current daily win, its not a mobile game. drop the daily crap. Or remove conquest gear n make honor gear the new BIS PvP gear n simply scale it up so its always superior in PvP to PvE gear.

it really is, but they fixed it in tww

A simple fix is to turn the PvP BG/blitz weeklies into dailies later in the season.

It doesn’t have to be agonizing, but it should still be a progressive growth with rewards on the way. FPS and MOBAs usually don’t care about that, MMORPG do, don’t try to compare them because is “apples to oranges”.

You pointed out some issues that make the gearing process worse, but the process of gearing is not the issue itself.

Stat increase, buffs and other stuff that changes the feel of a class and how it plays (set bonuses for example) are different issue that should work WITH the gearing process, not against it and not despite of it.

With the risk of sounding like a broken record: this is the introduction to WoW many people got when the game was “new”, with a sprinkle of “to level up a character you need a month”. Seems to me the more you make things easy and accessible, the more people want them to be easy and accessible, ending up with a dumb empty game with no challenge and no reason to be played.

Gearing IS anti casual. Because someone who never touched pvp or even a life long pve player that wants to approach pvp will have tho throw hours away or even days before being able to acquire a full honor set and before that they’ll have to go through a lot of frustration, getting deleted by fully geared players and doing no damage.
