With new technology would it be possible to merge more servers?

I feel like they’re trying their best with how much they’ve made cross-realm and cross-faction just in the last two years, and with cross-realm guilds coming soon. I imagine new technology doesn’t mean much when the game was made 20+ years ago with a realm system in mind, and then built on that system for the following 20 years. Considering how long it’s taking just to make individual things cross-realm and cross-faction, the game isn’t exactly built to accommodate much new technology of today.

It’s never been a technology issue, they’ve had connected realms for years. The number of realms that show isn’t actually the number of realms there is, it’s far fewer due to connected realms.

We’ve seen that it’s a massive undertaking to connect realms and also they risk upsetting players.

Unless they solve the migration issues then connecting servers will mean nothing. The dead servers were not all dead to begin with, some connections were very high but people either stopped playing on that realm or moved to the higher pop realms.

Blizzard have always been weak at managing realms for fear of upsetting players.

I suspect the next thing they’ll do it make some kind of mega server, they’ve effectively got some of that technology already.

Warbands will be the (slow) beginning of it. Was it Ion who said that they had to make new tech to get warbands to work because the existing tech couldn’t be modified…

To be fair, it is almost impossible to merge big servers and especially without sharding.

Have you seen the lag and resource usage in cities during rush hour vs downtime with few people?

The reason is that the number of active players put ALOT of strain on the resources, both on server side, and on your pc.
But the problem is that the strain increases exponentially and not linearly.

What I mean is that if you got 10 people in a town, the server has to send the info of those 10 players to 10 receivers (their pcs), but if you have 100 players in the town, the servers all of a sudden have to send the data of 100 players to 100 pcs!

So you can understand how merging servers is one thing, but increasing server capacity and playability is something else altogether.

I think you were thinking about logarithms but it would be the opposite, exponentially.
