World of Warcraft: learning a new language

I learnt MMO/Internet speak.

My native language is English but since playing WoW I’ve learnt new words like ‘pwnd’, ‘plox’,‘imba’ and many more :stuck_out_tongue:

Congratulations on your achievement in learning a new language.

As a British person I wish playing WoW was part of the school syllabus, as there are so many natives that have far poorer command of the English language than you have demonstrated here.

I never studied eng at school… ive improved it with aD&D first and with baldurs gate 1,2 after.
With wow there was definitive jump to perfection (:rofl:)

No. I learned english long before WoW became a part of my life, and not found any other to naturally learn.

Imba… omg, not heard that word in years!

I learned and developed majority of my English from WoW and by practising over the years. And yesterday someone I was talking with in-game said “I know people who speak the language natively who don’t have the vocabulary as you do, no joke.” - It felt good

Back in the day it was much harder to learn English via games etc. in my country internet wasn’t so widespread around 2005-2006 but still thanks to my offline software dictionary on my computer (Moonstar Dictionary I still remember) I learnt alot of words by the time. Power of alt+tab brought me to this level of knowledge.

It is good to know English. It gives me access to a wide variety of knowledge outside of the game as well and I ended up in English Language and Literature department in college.

I learned english from watching Cartoon Network as a kid, now i see all the cartoons are dubbed.

I would like to listen to Chinese audio with English UI on, but the game won’t allow it. I can only connect to my realm with the English setting.

For those who don’t know English, then WoW could be that learning environment they need. Outwith English, WoW doesn’t offer much in the way of learning another language besides French/Russian and I think maybe Italian.

i was actually supposed to fail the year due to my bad english grades  (not native speaking, i was maybe 11 or 12) until a friend introduced me to online games which predate wow.

i still remember sitting infront of my computer with an actual dictionary book because i was apparently too stupid to use the internet one lol, taking ages to look up words and stringing sentences together. it was a really rough start and one guy even shortchanged me, asking if i would sell quest items for 1k each. i didnt even know what “k” meant and when he told me i though wow thats SO much money.
…i later found out that people sold those things for 50-100k each…

i then started to watch more videos and films in english and my grades improved immediately and thus passed the year. i loved to be able to communicate with people from all over the world, which was definitely a driving factor and even made a friend who was from sweden. we were friends for half a decade until the communication broke off. i was also spending waaay too much time on forums in the very early 2000s.

however, i really started to talk to people via voice chat on wow, which was/is quite a struggle as well due to crippling anxiety and lack of confidence in my english skills. now its not that bad anymore but oh well, im still dreading talking but i definitely want to improve on that!

i think games and videos/movies are excellent for learning english. right now i am even using the english client because its just easier to communicate when pugging. :+1:

i learnt french as my second foreign language at school but after 4 years school completely obliterated all my desire to learn it. :face_vomiting:

i wouldnt mind picking up another language again via games etc but right now i am just lacking the time to actually sit down and watch movies and stuff.

For non native English speakers I can see the benefit of playing online games that are predominantly English language speaking.

As I already know the language I can’t say I’ve really learnt anything language wise but my typing skills improved dramatically to the point where I could type as fast as I could talk which helped enormously in my job. My boss would frequently ask me to get one of the secretaries to type out quotes and covering letters but by the time he’d told me what he wanted to say I had already typed it in the PC and printed it off.
