Your character story... written by AI

I do wonder - and with Acrona in the thread - if Argent Archives has been used to train AI sets (probably).

I take solace with the potential fact that some poor AI wrote up a story somewhat based on my awful ‘literature’ I cooked up several years ago.

Would be really funny if somehow asking for a story about ‘Nerathion’ spewed back a garbled version of what I once wrote on AA.

So, the two major arguments against AI are basically 1. There is a bunch of copyright infingements and 2. AI generated stories and pictures are not art. While the copyright thing is a no brainer and I really thank Acrona for the deep insigns, I wonder if AI pictures and stories never can be art. It is not very creative to let the AI do a manga style image from a screenshot, but what do you think about creators that combine AI and classic methods?

Example: Stelfie the Time Traveler, who combines AI, Photoshop and other methods and whose images take around 10 to 15 hours until they are perfect?

https://twitter.com/StelfieTT for reference.

I’d surmise it’s somewhere around the lines of ‘is tracing art?’ type of thinking. Is it an original creation, if you start changing parts of the traced art?

Or how - I think it’s called matte painting? - where you take images from the Internet and slap them together with Photoshop, blending in parts and whatnot to make them look as part of one setting.

That twitter user in particular - idk, I don’t know what parts of the memes (I guess) are done with AI and which with Photoshop. Some just look like generic edits on meme backgrounds, so I assume the AI has generated the pictures of famous people. In the end, you haven’t come up with the character or its looks, or the backgrounds.

Personally I’d just say the best use would simply be to have it generate an idea for you that you then use as inspiration, but not something you’d track. Like you’d do with Google Images searching for ideas, with a sort of twist.

(also, the twitter user is doing NFTs? pass. the pic with beethoven is especially funny looking at the pianos. can’t say it’s perfect)

Speaking of AA, I did see something very sketchy on there a few weeks ago. Some profile posted a pro-AI art meme, talking about how art should be for “everyone”.

It just got me thinking: ah yes, artists. That notoriously privileged and wealthy demographic.

Thankfully, it was removed.

I doubt that the Argent Archives is widely enough known or used that it’d be specifically scraped or trained on. Out of curiosity though, I tested what results like “argent archives”, “argent archives warcraft” and a few other search word combinations would yield in the dataset search page. Saw nothing that would seem to point at the website in specific. The results were more generic archives and WoW stuff.

Drawing a line at what point something becomes art, or at least copyrightable art, is tough. And regardless of whether it is or isn’t, doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate it or be evoked by it, such as memes, which sometimes stir more emotion in us than an illustration that took someone 30 hours to make.

In the U.S., the Copyright Office suggests that “coming up with the right prompt isn’t enough to be considered creative work.”

As for the EU, this might be an interesting read in regards to your question where we currently stand on it from a laws point of view:

As for my personal opinion, in this case I focus less on “is it art” and more on “what’s the human expression in this”. You can express the same subject in a great number of ways based on your knowledge, skill, experience, taste, observation, mental library (of things you’ve seen and memorized), and what you want to tell with the piece. Most might not consider drawing a simple dot or a line across paper art, but most would consider a portrait drawing art no matter whether it’s a beginner’s or a professional’s picture.

Artists make creative choices in most aspects of an image or a story, from rhythm and composition to design as they work towards conveying something with intent, while AI generators outsource those choices to the training material and calculations.
