I had an idea for a military guild once. I essentially got a little bored of some military guilds who don’t put much effort into founding their guild other than 'we are a military guild.
The idea revolved around some figure in the Alliance or Horde hierarchy who decided that, given the sheer volume of regiments lost during the 4th war, that the best way to get a new regiment together, in a time when morale is low, would be to revive an old, fallen heroic regiment. Perhaps one that held the line during some battle so that others could escape, such as a regiment that held the docks in Stormwind during the fall of Stormwind in the 1st war so that the King and civilians could escape. I felt this gave a little bit of history to a fairly basic concept and members could claim to have some knowledge or attachment to the regiment, such as having family that served in it or were saved by it.
I thought the guild could have a fairly new, low ranking officer in charge. I find most military guilds try to go for something like Marshal or General for their guild leader rank which can come across negatively. I liked the idea of a fresh faced, newly promoted, perhaps only as high as Captain, young officer who can present a fresh face to a new guild full of new faces.
As it was to represent a new generation of Alliance/Horde forces, I thought it would make sense for it to be a multi-racial/class military guild, as I also felt this was a niche that a lot of military guilds avoid. I wanted to try go with an Alexander the great style of leadership, where the Captain would go on watch some times so his soldiers could rest, would partake in fights and have rules in the guild that if someone died in the line of duty, the Captain would ensure they were buried with full honours and that their family would be provided for.
I even went to the effort to type up a few events and campaigns, some with the option of actually losing battles to instill a sense of impact if the players made poor choices, creating situations where it wasn’t just victory after victory, but sometimes there would be desperate retreats, hold out fights against a superior enemy and the possibility, player willing, of character death and serious injury.
Finally, I had an idea about the progression of the guild. The Guild leader could stay as Captain forever, or could gradually be promoted alongside the guild, perhaps at the end of some long campaign or operation. This would tie into the guild itself being rewarded, with the idea that the Alliance/Horde military could award the regiment with honours, such as giving them permission to add some sort of emblem or sigil to their banners that indicated some honour or praise, like Roman legions did.
I thought these ideas would help make the guild feel quite tight knit, create a sense of belonging and encourage folks to enjoy themselves and sort of emphasize that it was as much the members guild as it was mine.
Never got around to it though.
