I’m very happy to hear uniques become more important again in Diablo 4. But there was always (even in Diablo 1, Diablo 2 and also in Diablo 3) an issue which disturbed me on uniques. A unique item per definition should mean that there’s only one piece of this item within the entire world.
But wait - you can not drop a Stone of Jordan once within a lifetime for only one player … so here is little suggestion which may has more potential than just that what i wrote here.
Let’s say the game runs an there are X player’s wearing an unique Y. “Each” unique of the same kind is “unique” but in this moment its not becuase many other players wear it - so it’s at most rare - but not unique.
So what could we do to make this item unique at least in its impact if not on it self.
There could be some kind of “Source of force” if only one player within a server wears this item this player would really wear a unique item with 100% of the unique’s “Source of force”.
If e.g. 100 players wear this item the item would still be a unique but its “Source of force” would be shared and so the impact of the item would weaken. Players would see that with an indicator and maybe decide to change this item in order to gain another and/or higher bonus form another item. As it were the other item would become stronger again.
There would be some kind of a “self balacing” effect on uniques - always goaling to gain a 100% “Source of force” and therewith a REAL unique item with all its strengths.
