Dear Overwatch Team,
I have been playing your game for several years now and have truly enjoyed it. However, I have some concerns regarding the direction in which the game appears to be heading. I have never written to a game development team before, which should indicate how much the future of this game means to me. I have a few ideas on how Overwatch could regain its former glory and attract more players (while still catering to long-time fans like myself). I would like to share some of them here and would greatly appreciate the opportunity for further dialogue on this matter.
Firstly, I believe that reintroducing competitive modes in the „Arcade“ section would be beneficial. Modes like Lucio Ball, 1v1, and Team Deathmatch could bring back some much-needed variety. I rarely play Overwatch solo these days, but if a competitive 1v1 mystery heroes mode were introduced, it would likely change that, and I’m confident I wouldn’t be the only one.
Secondly, I find that the reward curve in Ranked is too low. Many players have expressed a desire for more variation in the amount of Competitive Points awarded once a rank is achieved, similar to how it was in OW1. I understand that the current system is designed to encourage longer playtime by rewarding 100 points after a certain number of games, but a more balanced approach could be beneficial.
Thirdly, allow more free-to-play content! That was one of the highlights of OW1, though I understand OW2 has adopted a different structure.
Overall, I feel the current approach is heavily focused on profit maximisation. While I can appreciate that, especially as someone with an MBA, I would offer a word of caution: if the player base perceives this too strongly, as is the case now, the gains may only be short-term. Long-term sustainability is key. If you are uncertain whether my views align with the broader player community, I would suggest taking a look at discussions on platforms like Reddit.
I have several more ideas and would be happy to share them if the opportunity arises. Additionally, I would be interested in a potential consulting role, though I’m not familiar with your internal structures. I may be able to offer a fresh perspective, one that isn’t, as the saying goes, “blinded by routine.”
Thank you for your time and for creating such a great game. I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
Astravus
