I was enjoying my time playing D2R, at first, the pretty graphics the quality of life changes it was all good. But, it wasn’t long before I was greeted by the fundamental problem with D2R, the lack of content! ahh but this is a faithful version of D2 I hear you cry, yes it is, and that’s the problem(for me anyway).
The levelling process and that of getting to and completing hell is trivial, even someone with zero friends can get hell completed with random groups within a day, it is easy, just spend a few hours and hey presto…it’s done. With friends it’s even easier and quicker. So what’s left? the content is technically done, the bosses and quests needed to complete hell are checked off, what now? Magic find, that’s what’s left. And that’s it, there is nothing else but an endless circle of repeating the same bosses or areas to find items either to trade or keep and use yourself. This may have been good enough 21 years ago, but now, I don’t think it is.
There are many players out there that love magic find running, the thrill of finding that GG item, trading it for another GG item upgrade your gear and go do more magic find runs, and more, and more and more…the cycle is endless. If that is enough for you, fantastic, you have all that you need in a game, but I personally become frustrated at the lack of variety of end game choices, run into Pindle, 20 seconds later your off to Mephisto, 90 seconds later you off to Diablo etc etc rinse and repeat. Of course there is cow runs, that’s different you say. It’s still a tedious rinse and repeat of the same limited content. D2R is a twenty odd year old game with a coat of new paint and that’s all, no disrespect to the guys n girls that developed D2R, did a great job with what you had to work with, but a game that has such limited content that is essentially trivial as far the journey to the end goes, after all how many people actually do all the quests? Better question, how many NEVER rush a character? Never do Trist runs, Tomb runs or Baal runs just to get higher levels so the next difficulty is trivial and you can rush through it again in exactly the same way as the previous difficulty. Everything about the way the game is played is rushing what little content there is, to get hell done…and then all that is left is MF. This was fine 20 or so years ago, today however I personally feel this is just not enough.
The most annoying part of this is that I was dumb enough to think pretty graphics and a few QoL tweaks would be enough, enough to keep my interest, but sadly I was indeed dumb enough to expect D2R to be more and better than D2. A faithful recreation of D2 it is, and for those that loved D2 and played it for many many years even after it lost the majority of it’s playerbase D2R is a breath of fresh air, for me though, it is the disappointment I hoped it wouldn’t be.
D2R is uninstalled and will remain so. Waiting for D4 now, would like to think it will be less of a “rush to the end and MF” game than D2/D2R is, time will tell.
Oh, almost forgot…D3 is an even worse example of “rush to the end and MF” than D2/D2R, right…I’m off to go find a game to play that will fill the D2R hours.
To those that stay and love the game, good luck and have fun.
I mean you can play however you want so don’t take this personal, but playing in a group is “easy mode”. I have yet to run a char through Hell because I love playing solo and treat D2R pretty much like an offline game, so am currently levelling every class to at least beaten Nightmare.
Even games like Dark Souls, which a vast majority of people struggle with a lot, can be made simple and easy by playing in a group.
That’s the essential problem though, “you” haven’t completed anything.
A group of friends or random people carried you through the game.
You got boosted through all the content and then complain there’s no content.
Start up single player and complete it all and make and find all the stuff yourself.
Are you giving away your stuff?
Im also very sad there is no mod support. Path of diablo would have solved soo much
D2 end game has always been non-existent. Grind for items so you can get better at grinding. Pffft. Unless you PvP it’s utterly pointless after beating Hell unless you feel like levelling multiple characters/builds. But even then it’s very very limited in gameplay terms. I wish Blizz would consider adding something like Rifts to give the game a bit of life.
I hadn’t played D2 for 20 years, and the one thing that struck me on playing through D2R was how incredibly short the campaign is. Amazing how the memory plays tricks, as that’s not how I remember it.
Diablo needs maps. At least
The content in this game are the items, my boy. Get your last wish phaseblade and then complain because there is no content.
If you came to diablo 2 expecting a massive ammount of farming zones, maps and different dungeons you are playing the wrong game, this one is all about itemization.
Great -1 for the queues don’t let the door hit you on your way out.
The fact that its a remastered 20 year old game just whooshes over your head ehh ? All you had to do is watch d2:lod videos or streamers to get a feel for what it is.
I have characters that have been rushed, but also ones that have not. Regardless of how a character gets to “complete” the game by beating hell the result is still the same…MF runs and more MF runs.
At the risk of repeating myself, the game has no end game content other than MF and for some there is ubers.
As for your suggestion of playing single player and collect/make everything myself, that is just the same as multi player…get to hell, MF until your eyes bleed, upgrade gear MF until yours brain bleeds and so on and so forth.
For those that love that, fantastic…enjoy yourself, I however don’t enjoy that.
So please explain how an “end game” system such as maps or rifts are any different.
You run them repeatedly to get better gear, so you can increase a number by 1 in which you then run that repeatedly to get better gear.
In diablo instead of adding 1 to a “rift/map number” you are doing it to reduce the duration of your runs. So instead of +1 you’re looking for -5 seconds or whatever.
I’ve come with some suggestions for new content here:
Uber Chicken pls.
What a tragedy for all of us. Would’ve been even sadder though if you had also deleted your forum account and left us without your thrilling updates.
Gotten to lvl 99 yet? Found all items? All runes? Made some great runewords?
No??
Ofc not. U prolly play nubcore. Played it 20 years ago? I plaued LoD up to june 2021 more or less for 20 odd years and i still havent gotten to 99, found all items or all runes nor made all the runewords.
And all on Hardcore ofc.
Am i dissappointed in the errors Actiblizzion have managed to create? Yeah.
Is there content in the game? Yeah. Its not finding an item for +1 damage. That statement alone proves u never played D2LoD at all but just try to be a “yeah, i played this for so many years” individual there are 13 a dozen of already in forums. Game is loaded with content and challenges but u and the rest are just too noob to see them. So why not stop whining cus u have literally nothing to whine about. U never was a D2 gamer. U just pretend like so many do.
The reasons you mentioned why you uninstalled the game are exactly the reasons why I play it. There were only two reasons I stopped playing Diablo2. One was the for me no longer acceptable graphics and the other was, that when you took a break (for playing something different in between) you either had to keep logging in your characters or your accounts would be gone when you came back which was very frustrating. After losing my accounts 4 times + the at that time really outdated graphics ended my last return very fast. Since both my problems are gone in D2:R I plan on playing it again for quite a long time. But I can also accept that the concept of a game is not for everyone, therefore I wish you much fun in other games. At least you realized it is not for you and you are not trying to change the game for us.
I would completely agree with you but for one problem: these people ARE actually trying to change this game according to their tastes, and that is the reason they spam numerous topics on this subject.
Yes, I agree. Most of them. But DFScrublord is not and is doing it right. Instead of changing the game he is looking for a game that suits his needs. My post was meant as an answer to his since he is doing it right. There are so many games. You do not need to change one to your needs.
I pretty much agree with everything you said, the game design was great back then, but I’m pretty much over my nostalgia at this point. I already have a sorc that can mf and a uber killer, why would I bother min-maxing a character just to have them run through the same bs again? I don’t like PVP but PVP in this genre as a whole isn’t great.
I get the addiction but lets not act like there’s tons of other games that don’t have similar addictive qualities. Or games that have those same addictive qualities + actually have end game content. This is both inside and outside of the genre.
One thing I will say is D2 doesn’t hold your hand for rare items, so you do have to do thousands of runs just to find what you need. That could be a good thing for some people. For me I just can’t, it’s just a waste of time to go from “I can kill everything in hell” to “I can kill everything in hell 2 seconds faster”.
A lot of the feedback you’re getting really isn’t helpful either:
- “Getting to level 99, finding all items” etc… none of that is interesting nor is it content. If that makes you a “real D2 gamer”, I don’t want to be a real D2 gamer.
- “How are maps or rifts different?” Rifts aren’t really different, but I do think its fun racing against the clock, at least it feels like a mini game of some sort. Maps are by definition new content not sure what their point is there. Any new map, enemy, boss, etc. beats running Baal for the millionth time.
I bought D2R for nostalgia and to play a druid again.
not really, D3 has a solid end-game, Greater Rifts with leaderboards, a measurable progress.
Blizzard SHALL add an end-game to D2R, otherwise the remake is for nothing…
those who want can stick with “original”.
Fixed it. for you. No thanks needed.
Otherwise wouldn’t be a remake, but a new game.
Quit beating the dead demon… it won’t drop what you’re wishing for.
