The game suddenly started freezing on launch

I’ve been playing D2R without any issues for a few weeks and it started and ran fine yesterday afternoon. I quit the game as usual and went to do something else for a bit, but when I tried to launch the game again about an hour later, it first took about a minute for anything to happen when I pressed the play button on Battle.net and then D2R appeared in windowed mode, but only showing a black screen which eventually goes “not responding”. It takes a few minutes to manage to close the window in any way and many things on the PC feels kinda sluggish before the D2R process shuts down. As far as I know, nothing on the PC changed in the hour I wasn’t playing the game. I’ve tried several other games after this started happening and they all run fine.

So far I’ve tried the following things without success:

  • The Scan and Repair tool.
  • Reinstalling the game.
  • Updating my graphics driver.
  • Moving the game folder to a different drive.

I have similar issue and I noticed that the Battle.net app got an update before the error first occurred.

We have seen reports of players where Bitdefender seems to have been the cause. If you use Bitdefender, please try disabling it, or temporarily uninstalling it, to see if that is the case for you as well
