D3 fails to start

Despite ensuring I have no Razor apps running and trying to start in 32 bit instead of 64 bit, I still can’t get Diablo III to open. I get the Reaper of souls splash screen then the monitor turns Grey for a few seconds, then I see the desktop again. Battlenet says the game is running but it isn’t. I have un-installed both Diablo III and Battlenet and re-installed them on a seperate HDD from my OS but to no avail. D3 was running fine on my Win 7 setup but since I installed it on my new Win 10 PC , I can’t get it to run.
Please explain any solution in detail as I’m not familiar with a lot of the terms I’ve read so far on this site.

Hey there Habdab!

Can you please try setting up the game in Windowed mode and see if there is any difference?

To do so you can follow the steps below:

  • Open the Documents folder
  • Enter the Diablo III folder
  • Open the file d3Prefs.txt
  • Look for the line DisplayModeWindowMode “0”
  • Change it in DisplayModeWindowMode “1”
  • Save the file and try opening the game again

If the game opens up, you should be able to set it up again in full screen via the in-game options

If despite the above the game still doesn’t open up though we’ll need a couple of diagnostic files in order to troubleshoot the situation with you a bit more in details.
Once you have the files created please upload them on an external website (eg. Pastebin) and write the links in your next post. You’ll need to add some spaces here and there in the URL, or you can use the Preformatted Text option available in the reply window

Thank you for your prompt reply, I tried your suggestion but unfortunately it made no difference.
As you requested, I’ve made a copy of DxDiag and MSInfo and placed them both on Pastbin. com. The links are as follows:
MSInfo = https:/ /pastebin. com/ t50B15D0
DxDiag = https:/ /pastebin. com/ V9araQ7Z
Your assistance is appreciated.

How to link stuff without Trust Level 3…

  1. Copy the URL to the clipboard
  2. Paste the URL into your forum post
  3. Highlight the URL in your post
  4. Click the </> button in the editor
  5. This will turn your URL into pre-formatted text
  6. Whilst not clickable, the URL will be properly formatted so others can copy / paste it like this…

https://pastebin.com/t50B15D0
https://pastebin.com/V9araQ7Z

Having said which, as I’m allowed to do links, here are yours…

Thank you, After receiving my information, do you have any idea what’s preventing my copy of Diablo III from properly opening up?

Heya! Can you try editing the same D3Prefs.txt by changing DisplayModeRefreshRate “60” to DisplayModeRefreshRate “59” ? Then try launching the game and if that doesn’t help, delete D3Prefs.txt from your Diablo III directory completely and once again try to launch the game. If that fails too, please disable overlay programs you have running, that can help too.

Thank you for your continued support

DisplayModeRefreshRate set to 59
D3Prefs.txt deleted
Overlay programs disabled.
No effect.
I still can’t launch Diablo III. Exactly the same symptoms as I’ve always had.
Any more suggestions?

Hello Habdab!

Considering your diagnostic files we do have a couple of additional suggestions for you, would you mind trying the following?

  • First please restart your system in a selective startup mode
  • Once back in Windows please also uninstall the software Advanced SystemCare, which seems to be constantly running in background on your system

At this point try running the game again.

If nothing still changes, please also try the following:

  • Click on the Blizzard logo in the top left corner of the Battle.net app
  • Click on Settings
  • Go to the Game Settings tab and look for Diablo III
  • Enable the option Launch 32-bit client (instead of 64-bit)
  • Press Done

Try the game once again

Thank you for all of your suggestions, unfortunately none of which worked for me. I took the drastic step of re-installing Windows 10 and up to now Diablo III is working. After searching the Internet for a solution prior to contacting yourselves, I know I’m not the only person who ran up against this issue, Blizzard and Microsoft should talk to each other and find out what’s breaking Diablo III.
Many thanks for trying.
