Possibilities…
- You issued a Friends Request to them but you did it so long ago that you don’t remember issuing the request, they accepted it whilst you were offline, and you were added to each other’s Friends List.
- It’s possible to set your status to “Appear Offline” in the Battlenet launcher, and then run the game. This would allow the other person to have accepted a Friend request whilst still appearing to be offline. You could view the other player’s Armoury pages and look at their Career page. At the bottom of that page is the date / time they last played the game.

You can view outstanding Friend requests (i.e. those you’ve issued that haven’t been accepted / rejected yet) in the Battlenet Launcher…
