Online playing diablo 3 and diablo 3: reaper of souls

Hello,

I have diablo 3: reaper of souls. I want to buy a gift to my friend and I want to buy diablo 3. Can we play online together with these possibly 2 different versions of game?

In addition to the reply provided by @VitaKaninen, I also suspect that Campaign mode would be limited to the first 4 Acts… ie, the game ends when you kill Diablo, not when you kill Malthael.

I would suggest you get the Battle Chest, at least, so you can enjoy seasons, rifts and bounties together.
