FPS randomly locks itself under 10

SOLUTION
High fidelityFX / DLSS set to ultra performance.

I’ve returned all my settings to max, and all of my background programs are still running, and I’m running smooth on 4K, no stutters, no fps drops, or nothing, just easy sailing for days now.

(OLD) SOLUTION
This might still solve the issue for some, so leaving it here anyway
I’ve just had a session of 2,5 hours, with no issues or stuttering. Here’s what I did:

  1. Turn of EVERY single background task on your PC. I had Diablo and Discord running.
1a. In Discord, I had turned off hardware acceleration
  2. Turn all the graphics down to the lowest settings possible, and set High fidelity in my case, otherwise DLSS, to “Ultra performance”
  3. Restart the game.

I will test a bit more throughout the week, and update this post with new findings.

I have been unable to find any helpful information by searching online, and I’m not sure where else to go to make an official bug report. If I’m in the wrong place, please redirect me, or provide links to similar issues that I could look into.

The game runs smoothly for a variable period, ranging from 5 minutes to 2 hours, but then suddenly the FPS drops to around 5-10, and I cannot consistently recreate this issue. It seems to be provoked inconsistently when tabbing in and out of the game or when loading new areas.

Occasionally, changing from windowed mode to borderless mode temporarily resolves the problem, but this solution is extremely inconsistent.

Scanning the game yielded no results.

I don’t believe it’s a hardware limitation since my specs are as follows:
CPU: 3800x
GPU: 6900XT
RAM: 32GB

I typically achieve 80-120 FPS on max settings at 4K, depending on the area and the number of mobs.

I initially had the game installed on a RAID0 array of two SSDs, but I am currently moving it to my C: drive, which is a Samsung 980 Pro NVMe SSD, to see if that will resolve the issue. However, I have low hopes.

All my drivers are up to date, and I am running the latest version of Windows 11 (not on the beta or insider program).

Here are the background tasks running on my system:

  • Discord
  • Gyazo
  • Steam
  • PowerToys
  • Spotify
  • Logitech GHub

I have set the Battle.net launcher to shut down upon game start.

I’ll gladly provide additional information if requested.

Thank you for your attention.

Best Regards,
Someone who otherwise loves this game.

EDITS:

  • Can confirm, moving it to my C:/ drive did not solve the issue. Got about 20 minutes of gametime.

  • I’ve tweaked just about every graphics and display setting, but to no avail, the bug still happens.

Have you tried unlocking the background FPS or setting it to your foreground FPS?

Yes, I have.

I had a theory, that the game somehow got confused, and thought it was minimized, which would explain why tabbing in and out provoked it, and why switching between windowed and borderless sometimes fixed it, but setting the background FPS cap to max (400, I think?), still resulted the same issue.

Forgot to mention in my post, that I’ve also played around with all of the display / graphics settings, even when it looked like something running on a PlayStation 2, the FPS still bugged out. Will add this information in another edit.

Thanks for the reply though

Turn them off then, and reboot. I don’t know why you have not tried this already.

I would rather suggest to turn of hardware acceleration in Discord, steam and any other app like your browser.
This helped me alot with reducing huge stutters and even crashes.

I have the same trouble. And i don’t know what i should do to fix this.

Turn them off… First thing which comes to mind. Just do it and reboot.

Sounds like “switch” mode to me with that 360P N64 textures gameplay

Sorry, could you explain in more detail? I don’t understand.

I think all problems were in hardware acceleration. I turned off hardware acceleration in Discord, Battle.net, and Chrome. And… without any stuttering more like 6 hours

Try using DLSS / High FidelityFX set to ultra performance instead, that has solved everything for me.
