The problem with off-line play is that it would mean that data files for player progress would be held on the player’s machine.
I seem to recall that this happened on the console versions of D3 where people did modify the files giving themselves and the items they carried powers that were not in-game. I did hear that if such a player joined a group they would ‘infect’ all the players in that group ruining their characters.
I guess they could add extra verification to player’s profiles to prevent this from happening again.
That is not the only problem, that is just one of the problems for the game architecture that controls itemization and progress through online save files and server-based RNG.
Having a full offline version would mean that the developer has to invest into an elaborate way of protecting against the possible invalidation of the player progress via modified code, file adjustments or other methods through online verification of the data. That or completely separate online and offline characters by cutting all their ties to online realms. Meaning that if you want to play offline you have to select offline mode for your character on creation and you will never be able to share progress, resources or anything else with an online character (much like seasonal characters did in D3).
And it surprises me a lot that people in this thread who claim to be experienced developers in the corresponding area ignore this particular aspect completely and instead throw insults at each other for having a different opinion
Offline first! please. I don’t understand why i need to be online to play the game alone.
I am usually playing in a public transportation. Having to be online is frustrating.
They already have the experience and code from d3 offline mode.
I don’t have an issue with it being online, how else can I show off my Cry of Ashava, but if I take my console on holiday to a villa with no or unreliable internet, I would like the option of offline mode.
It would be a good feature, but it is not a complaint.
I played 1000s of hours offline. They already have experience and code for offline mode.
My bet, the store only works online… I won’t ever buy anything from the store, purchased transmogs are like buying your own 1st place trophies, haha. So, it would take a boycott of people who do buy from the store, I guess, to get them to consider an offline mode.
What if they sold offline passes? How much would any of you pay?
I don’t care how Blizzard built the game. If they planned to make it online only then they should have the capacity to support it, end of story. Anything less is bullshit.
Given the fact that the servers still dont work properly after 8 months, i agree. This is absolutely unacceptable and way below blizzards standard (wich is not even that great these days anyway)
Blizzards other IPs may be questionable at best these days, but at least their servers work.
