Mercenaries Bounty guide

Some suggestions on what teams I’ve personally found useful against specific fights. For most part you can do normals with almost any team and these might be more useful tips for new players or heroics. I’m sure people out there have better combos, but I hope this helps anyone struggling.

Felwood

  • Felwood 1 (Raven) - Lich King.
  • Felwood 2 (Blades) - Lich King. Place him in leftmost slot and freeze-taunt them all.
  • Felwood 3 (Guardians) - Anacondra, Bru’kan, Guff.
  • Felwood 4 (Xaravan) - Mutanus, Lokholar, Kurtrus. Mutanus is there to tank, Lokholar does insane damage on boss fight (~300 damage on round 1), and Kurtrus is superb for trash (since trash is all demons) and very good for boss too. Even on heroic you only need two of the three as they’re just that good.
  • Felwood 5 (Ancient) - Bru’kan, Guff + any other nature caster. Just nuke boss down asap, ignore adds.
  • Felwood 6 (Banehollow) - Xyrella, Velen, Anduin. Holy teams in general.

Winterspring

  • Winterspring 1 (Snowclaw) - Lich King, Velen, Anduin. Lich King is there to permanently slow down the boss totem summoning ability. Then Velen+Anduin whacks the totems gone with double Holy Nova on round 2. Just pass with them on round 1. Lich King dies pretty fast, but his job is done. Replace him preferably with some healer and just repeat until won.
  • Winterspring 2 (Ranel) - Rokara, Voone, Lich King. Lich King’s job is again just to slow down the boss, then die. Rokara is there to buff the Voone’s Dragons with +7/+14 and those Dragons of course have Whirlwind on, dealing 50+ damage. Essentially, Dragons murder everything, you win. The third guy in team has primary job of getting targeted by boss, leaving Rokara and Voone alone, so a Protector like LK is a very good bait. There are definitely stronger teams for this, but Rokara + Voone are a nice beginner-friendly combo and you can even farm heroic with them.
  • Winterspring 3 (Avalanchan) - Fire users + some Fighters as backup. Nuke boss down first, it should die before you lose the +20 fire damage buff from the enemy add that suicides.
  • Winterspring 4 (Ursula) - Lich King, Bru’kan, Malfurion (in that specific order!). Lich King again freezes enemies, while the casters kill Protector add first, then boss, leaving caster last.
  • Winterspring 5 (Icehowl) - Malfurion (for roots), Tirion (shield + attack reduction), any summoners (summon minion, then get it killed against boss and you get new free iceblock). Don’t bring explosive potato here, it just messes up everything. Also be careful when boss hits his targets in front of him, as he will hit two targets at once if the teams is mis-aligned due to numbers on both sides.
  • Winterspring 6 (Ahune) - Geddon with Antonidas/Balinda/Chi-Ji to provide Geddon his combo. Third slot goes to a healer to keep those two alive, even Xyrella is quite enough. Just don’t bring any protectors to this boss. This is guaranteed win on heroic too, assuming your Geddon is skilled enough to actually kill all adds in one move. As an alternative, any Fighter lucky enough to pick up Hunting Party on the way will auto-win this fight. You just don’t need luck if you have leveled up Geddon. One of the easiest fights to farm on heroic.

Blackrock

  • Blackrock 1 (Coren) - Fire team (Ragnaros, Geddon + Antonidas/Balinda/Alex/Chi-Ji). If you don’t have a fire team for some reason, anyone with Hunting Party is handy as this fight involves lot of spawned adds. This team is good enough for easily farming heroic too.
  • Blackrock 2 (Grimstone) - Lich King, Cornelius, Gruul. Gruul is here for fire resistance. Lich King is here to slow down boss, freeze and heal. And Cornelius is here to keep the other two alive long enough. If you pick up any Toughness treasures on your way to boss, you really can’t lose. For backups in the team, I’d favor Casters to finish off the boss and to have easy time with trash. This team is good enough for easily farming heroic too.
  • Blackrock 3 (Emperor) - Bru’kan, Malfurion, Morgl. Malfurion is here primarily for his passive aoe healing, Morgl’s primary job is to give more health to the barrels, and Bru’kan to provide the massive damage boost. It’s a bit random fight and lot can go wrong quickly, so expect to need backups too.
  • Blackrock 4 (Garr) - Balinda, Jaina, Lokholar. Single target nuke the boss down, slight cleave is fine too as single add dying is harmless. Using aoe is suicice. Holy team is a good alternative too. Kill adds one per turn once boss is gone.
  • Blackrock 5 (Geddon) - I actually don’t have any specific combo for this, so I guess anything goes. Just make sure you don’t explode with any char. If you’re marked and can’t avoid moving last, just pass the turn with that char and don’t move at all.
  • Blackrock 6 (Executus) - Start with frost team, bring in holy team as they die. Expect to need more than 3 mercs. Once Ragnaros spawns, you only have couple rounds of time to nuke him down before he murders your team, so you want heavy-hitting Casters to be alive at that point.
  • Blackrock 7 (Omokk) - Xyrella, Velen, Anduin. Kill protector add first, then boss, leaving caster last. That caster is the one keeping your team alive with its +10 healing. Nature team with Malfurion would be fine too. Circle of Healing from treasures for even more easy times.
  • Blackrock 8 (Drakkisath) - Gruul + some casters/healers. Gruul’s fire resistance pretty much wins the fight.
  • Blackrock 9 (Rend) - Geddon, Antonidas, Ragnaros, Cairne, Diablo, Alexstrasza. Here Cairne can be replaced with Sky Admiral, and Alex is really just a backup fire caster. The goal is to nuke as hard as you can with your initial trio, and once they start dying, bring in Diablo and Cairne/SkyAdmiral. Diablo is the key char here, as he needs to use his fire aoe attack and do it with speed or 4 or less. Cairne and Sky Admiral can both provide such speed boost. In many cases the fight is over with Diablo’s fire attack, but there is enough randomness to occasionally need Alex too. Try not to kill any adds the boss spawns before Diablo comes in.
  • Blackrock 10 (Razorgore) - Bru’kan, Cookie, Malfurion. Single target nuke boss while Cookie’s aoe bleed and Malfurion’s aoe keep the adds from reaching 60hp. Note that occasionally some egg uses Double Time to heal twice, so might want to single target hit that one. Any random damage is bad here so avoid eggs dying. If things don’t go perfect or you don’t have this team, mind control boss on round 3 (i.e. don’t use mind control on round 2 when it’s available but wait for one more turn), that way you get to use boss insta-kill ability on one of the eggs and put it back to cooldown. And remember that even though boss is on your side, you can still hit it with most of your spells.
  • Blackrock 11 (Vaelastrasz) - Malfurion, Guff, Bru’kan (Guff in the middle spot). For other three, Varden, Brightwing and Mutanus (trash tanking).
  • Blackrock 12 (Chromaggus) - Valeera + casters. About 40% of the time you will get Assassinate ability from treasures to Valeera, and she will just insta-kill Chromaggus before the fight even begins. The other 60% of the time your team of casters handles this. Hunting Party does not work on this boss, in case you’re wondering. Personally I was using nature team for this, but it shouldn’t matter much.
  • Blackrock 13 (Nefarian) - Tavish, Antonidas, Geddon for first phase of the fight, then bring in Lich King, Ragnaros and Alexstrasza to replace them (you want Protectors for second phase, but Protectors would get murdered in phase one). Tavish may seem odd there, but his fire traps are very useful in phase 1.

Alterac Valley

  • Alterac Valley 1 (Ravak) - Anduin, Velen, Uther, Xyrella. Xyrella is primarily along for the trash fights, replacing Uther. For boss fight, Uther has one big job: to slow down the caster add that freezes your team. Sure, he’s not the only char in game that could do it, but he goes well with the holy team that is otherwise great for this fight. As long as the slow happens, the fight itself becomes quite easy. Even on heroic.
  • Alterac Valley 2 (Louis) - Cariel, Mannoroth, Jaraxxus. Cariel heals up the team while Jaraxxus and Mannoroth murder the enemy team with fel magic. Mannoroth lowering their attack is a nice bonus. Works easily for heroic too.
  • Alterac Valley 3 (Galvangar) - Varian… ok, he’s almost going to solo this, but not quite. Add strong protectors like Thrall, Garrosh, Grom. Your chars gain +15 HP per attack, making Varian actually survive all the attacking he does. Got me heroic done on first try.
  • Alterac Valley 4 (Popsicooler) - Balinda, Ragnaros, Geddon, Rexxar, Antonidas, Jaina. Try to get the treat trolley as low health as possible during round 1 without killing it. If you do kill it, no big deal, but optimally it should die on round 2. On heroic it may live up to round 3, which will likely wipe your fire team out, but hopefully by then it’s only boss left. Balinda’s Frost elemental freezing boss might save you a life too. Once you’re against boss only, you should be having Jaina and Rexxar summoning their taunting pets and boss just keeps killing them, while you kill boss. Tamsin would work fine too. This setup took heroic down on first try.
  • Alterac Valley 5 (Lokholar) - Malfurion, Bru’kan, Guff. Single target nuke boss down, absolutely do not kill any adds until boss is dead. This team wins even on heroic. As a special note, if you have exploding potato in the game, you’re in trouble and you most likely have to kill one add to make room for the potato to move over to enemy side. There’s a good chance something goes wrong and you wipe. Simply, don’t bring SPUD if you can avoid it. Also, Hunting Party does not work on this fight, in case you’re wondering.
  • Alterac Valley 6 (Drek’thar) - Antonidas, Geddon, Ragnaros, Balinda, Jaina, Lokholar. Essentially, fire team + frost team. Antonidas, Geddon and Ragnaros starts and nukes the meteor hurling protector down asap. If you have good treasures, maybe lucky SPUD bomb, you can even kill him on round 1 before he moves. Once that mob is dead, kill also the nasty wolf and then focus on boss. As your team starts dying, bring in the frost team. Whether Balinda or Jaina or Lokholar depends on how many protectors are still up and what treasures they have and so on. The add that gives you frost buff should stay alive as long as it can, since it’s fairly harmless but helps your frost team immensely. This setup killed heroic on first try for me with just 1 death.
  • Alterac Valley 7 (Rotimer) - Slowing the boss is practically mandatory, so Grommash or Diablo are pretty good choices here. I went with Diablo, Mannoroth and Rathorian because I needed some task done. Mannoroth died on round 1, but Grom replaced him and heroic dead on first try, no problem.
  • Alterac Valley 8 (Ichman) - Jaraxxus, Mannoroth, Alextrasza. Jaraxxus shoots huge fel damage with Fists and summons Infernals for +5 Fel in between, Mannoroth reduces enemy attack when suitable and spams Fel Lash in between for massive fel damage, while Alex is there for extra damage and some healing if necessary. Beats heroic too.
  • Alterac Valley 9 (Balinda) - Chi-Ji. Rest barely matter, but if you want to be extra safe or don’t have Chi-Ji, then bring Brightwing and Natalie.
  • Alterac Valley 10 (Ivus) - Fire team. Balinda, Geddon, Ragnaros, Antonidas, Alex. They’ll be enough to take down heroic too. Last spot for Xuen to earn the equipment.
  • Alterac Valley 11 (Vanndar) - pretty much any four casters will do. Holy team for example.
  • Alterac Valley 12 (Kazakus) - Brightwing, Sinestra, Long’xin, Wrathion, Chi-Ji, Gruul

Onyxia’s Lair

  • Onyxia’s Lair 1 (Smolderwing) - Mutanus with Yu’lon/Gruul/Trigore/Malfurion/Nefarian. Kill the adds off, then finish boss. Use the banner every round. Easy fight even on heroic.
  • Onyxia’s Lair 2 (Dragonbone Golem) - Anduin, Velen, Mutanus. Or you can replace Mutanus with another tank, but Mutanus is best, especially for clearing trash. Boss fight is very simple: Mutanus takes the couple melee hits while Anduin+Velen murder everything with double holy novas. For Velen, choose the Deathrattle equipment that heals team for 40, as that the boss keeps triggering it quite often, rather than choosing one of the Deathrattles from his own team. Overall easy fight though, win rate against heroic with this team is nearly 100%. Finally, do not bring SPUD bomb to this fight. If you can’t avoid it and it starts from your side, you need to kill one of the 60-health adds on round 1 or you lose. This is doable, but significantly increases the risk.
  • Onyxia’s Lair 3 (SI:7 Smuggler) - Smite, Gruul. Do not pick up any kind of random damage from the treasures on the way. To kill boss, simply kill his adds while keeping track on which egg is the boss. Smite gets huge amount of bonus attack from low health enemies (all those eggs), so use the equipment that gives him even more. Once it’s just eggs left, hit the one of them that’s the boss and kill him off. Very easy fight even on heroic.
  • Onyxia’s Lair 4 (Onyxia) - Anduin, Mutanus/Chi-Ji, Velen. In that order. This fight is slightly RNG, since Onyxia can hit you for massive amounts of damage in quick burst and there’s not much you can do about it. The middle slot is most vulnerable, so your strongest / most expendable guy should sit there. Mutanus is a very good pick as he’s best tank for trash too, while Chi-Ji’s value is the massive amount of healing he provides. If you go with Chi-Ji, the most valuable treasure to pick on the way is Circle of Healing. If you go with Mutanus, then anything that gives extra health to your Anduin and Velen, or reduced damage. Both of these teams will win heroic about 90% of the time, so it’s still pretty reliable farm. Final point: if you bring SPUD bomb to this fight, you will lose almost certainly. So plan your route to boss to stay away from that mystery node.
  • Onyxia’s Lair 5 (Undead Onyxia) - Nefarian, Sinestra, Voone, Mutanus, Wrathion, Rexxar. Nefarian is very strong here due to draining attack power from all the enemies while healing itself, Sinestra is also strong due to the self heals, and rest of the group are just good for damaging the boss. There’s enough randomness to lose mercs on the fight on heroic, but you still should win every time thanks to Nefarian.
  • Onyxia’s Lair 6 (Mi’da) - Xxx, Murky, Cariel. This is among the easiest boss fights in whole game, because you will win on round one, every time, even heroic. All you need to do is to kill one of the 60 health fighters with Cariel equipped with the item that heals your whole team for 60 HP on kill (which deals 420 damage to boss, game over). Murky is along to provide you two Murloc minions instantly (as they too get healed for 60 by Cariel, thus damaging boss by extra 120). The third char, shown as Xxx, is any char that can hit for 15 damage or more on a Fighter with speed 5 or quicker: Garrosh, Grommash, Gruul, Kurtrus, Malfurion, Mannoroth, Ragnaros, Lich King, Vanessa, Samuro, Galvangar, Edwin, King Krush, Eudora, Scabbs, Sylvanas, Antonidas, Natalie, Sky Admiral Rogers, Tamsin, Uther. Just pick your favorite. If your Murky isn’t leveled up yet, your Xxx char may need to hit bit harder than 15. Your three mercs need to do 51 damage in total, Cariel does 24, so that leaves 27 for the last two guys: Murky’s 12 and at least 15 from another. For treasures, just don’t pick anything that does any unpredictable damage that might mess up your setup.

Darkshore

  • Darkshore 1 (Corrupted Murlocs) - Thrall, Grommash, Vanndar (for boss fight) + trash killing team, Mutanus + couple strong casters would be my choice. Simple fight really, your three guys are there to kill the Maw before it spawns any adds. Depending on treasures you picked on the way, you may even kill Maw on round 1 (on heroic, normal is naturally even easier), or round 2 the latest. Why these specific mercs? Thrall with his equipped Windfury does at least 80-84 damage on round one, Grommash hits fairly hard too (30-34) but his primary job is to slow down Maw on round two to ensure kill before summon, and finally Vanndar’s job is to hit hard (48-50) and especially to slow down Maw by 1. Maw’s summon spell has speed 2, so Vanndar makes it 3, thus allowing Grommash to act first and slow Maw so much it’s dead before it summons anything. Win rate on heroic: 100% as long as you bring these 3 guys alive through all the trash. Trash itself is nearly all Murlocs, and most dangerous ones of them are Protectors and Casters.

This guide is BS
This whole mode is trash. Need to grind days over days of tasks to get specific equipment against even more specific bosses. Oh and you need sh*tload of gold to unlock building to play a grind fiesta game mode? FO Blizzard, go back to the roots and make games and game modes for gamers and NOT the shareholders!!

If you don’t like the mode, don’t play it. I don’t play any of the other modes of Hearthstone because I in reverse find them to be trash. Solo adventures is probably the only part of the game that isn’t repeat-grindy. For me Mercenaries is just Pokemon with far better game mechanics. Collecting all mercs, leveling them up, nothing else to do.

Would agree that Fire / Nature works for multiple bounties, even though I used Humans / Orcs a lot too (pre Alterac).

Fire / Nature / Holy / Fel are all quite strong generic teams. Melee (especially Orcs) are very strong on trash, but when they have to face a boss with high attack power, they just get murdered. On normal you can beat most of the content with nearly any decent setup. On heroic the fights are tuned to a point you may need a specific char to get a reliable win.

For the guide I tried to use common mercs where possible. Xyrella, Rokara, Cariel, Voone etc. are surprisingly strong for being among the oldest mercs and commonly available. Not to mention Kurtrus absolutely owning any demon bounties.

Well true that Orcs is pretty weak without Thrall (+HP equipment when attacked) or Saurfang buffing all damaged minions (+7/+9 with equipment) when using that Mobilizing Strike. But think whole idea with Humans or Orcs (at least for me) was just trying to get a lot of Start of Game: Human/Orc or Passive: Horde/Alliance buffs to get stats high. Well might have been also that at some months ago I didn’t have some mercs so had to force it to happen with given setup  Or it was about getting tasks done.

But like you said on Heroic it may come to that one specific character to stay alive for beating the bounty (/cough Fire team and Geddon). Might have to try some of these on some bosses, if I first remember which ones I didn’t do that cleanly.

Heroic bosses tend to have 25-40 attack power, so the problem is rather that your melees get killed just by hitting the boss and taking that 25-40 damage in return.

Thrall + Garrosh + Saurfang have done a lot of fighting for me too (beware upgrading Garrosh to speed 5 or you ruin it), and they tend to be quite strong against anyone they can kill on 2 rounds, before they run out of hp themselves.
