Can't update anymore

After the latest patch Heroes of the Storm is “stuck” at updating.
There is one major weird thing with this “bug” and that is that it’s the exact same on 2 pc’s and 1 laptop. All have the same issue after the latest update.

The issue when I click update is the message “We couldn’t access a folder. This is usually because you’re not logged in as admin”

Things I tried:

  • Reinstalling Battle.net
  • Delete battle net cache and files and reinstall again
  • Disable anti-virus
  • Switched from WiFi to Ethernet and back
  • Updated all the drivers to the latest
  • Change install location from C:\ProgramFiles(x86) to D:\Games (C: is an M2 drive and D is an SSD)
  • Give the Heroes of the Storm “Full Access Rights” on “Everyone” and the user.
  • Used windows restore to a week prior
  • Use Battle.net BETA

I could update Heartstone, Install WoW and Install Overwatch all without problems on both C:\ProgramFiles(x86) and D:\Games the only game that does not update (or install when removed) is Heroes of the Storm.

The only change that does something is the steps “Try creating a new administrator account to resolve permissions issues.”

I made a new Admin account, clicked the update button and the game updates and gives a Play Button.
Switch back to my own account and it goes back to “Update” and the same error.

The article mentions that updating/installing should fix it for the other account but that is not the case and then no other steps are mentioned.

What makes this more confusing for me is that it’s on 3 pieces of hardware with 2 different accounts (My pc and Laptop that play on this account and my wife’s pc with another account).

I have no clue on what to do and am not able to play Heroes of the Storm anymore :frowning:

Same issue here …i might be able to press play and open game to play some games , but after i close the game, am stuck on “upd” like above mention . i ofc
tried all “fixes”

I have the same issue, the latest bnet + hots patch update completely messed up hots install. Can no longer play unless I start the launcher from the .exe in support folder. Tried unistallling hots - no can not even install hots through bnet. Uninstalled and reinstalled bnet, hots still won’t install.

Same problem here. Friday i couldn’t update at all. So i uninstalled both HoTs and battlenet. Managed to reinstall battlenet client but ever since i havent been able to install HoTs. Keep getting the famous “not logged in as an admin” message. So tried all the suggested steps and also made a secondary admin account and nothing helps.

5 days without HoTs … I NEED MY FIX!!

I have tried everything and just can’t play HoTS anymore… Insane that multiple people have it. I have it on 3!!! seperate pieces of hardware and no one is able to make a fix :frowning:

It is a HoTS problem since, as I stated in OP, Hearstone, overwatch and WoW all work for me…

Soo… i unfortunally joined this group today. Tried all steps. Nothing worked. Hots in my windows account is broken, BUT when i made new admin account… it updated and works THERE. When i logged back in my account … still broken and still asks to update. So… when i want to play i will log out of my main account and into that new admin account. So i don´t get withdrawals.

I am having the same issue.
Until it’s been fixed by Blizzard, I’ll run the game by launching : Heroes of the Storm\Support64\HeroesSwitcher_x64.exe"
But I have to enter my credentials every single time :frowning:

They’re making it really hard for me to keep their game alive… I hope they fix this soon so I can actually play it

Same problem. Just happend today. I uninstalled HOTS and cant install it atm. Can instal sc2 and other games. Def HOTS clint problem

Just tried solution from here - remove HotS folder from Documents and Settings - and I was able to play HotS.
Just need to configure options as they are lost.
And it seems like I hit another problem - as it tries to update each time I start game, but it still playable.
Good luck guys and have fun!

Approximately the same solution worked for me. The culprit was the Heroes of the Storm folder in my Documents folder (I’m running Windows).

The problem was that this folder somehow got assigned to another user (which didn’t exist) and had its permissions set to disallow access even to administrators. I found this out when I tried to delete the folder and it told me I didn’t have permissions. I then reassigned the folder to Administrators (and made sure sub-folders and files inherit this setting) and then checked full access for the folder (and its contents) and was finally able to delete it (I choose to delete it just to make sure everything is fresh).

Hope this helps somebody.

EDIT: For a good tutorial on how to do all of this simply search for “How to Take Ownership of a Folder in Windows 10 Using File Explorer” on Google and the first result will help you.

thank you, this worked for me.
this issue was driving me nuts xD

I got it fixed. All 3 pc’s that have this issue have Google Drive installed and backup the document folder (with the heroes of the storm folder). Because of the update that happens everyday it keeps syncing (backing up) making the battle.net client think it’s in use.

So everyone that uses Google Drive, Dropbox, Onedrive or whatever to sync you “Documents” folder could try to disable syncing and than delete the folder. For me it fixed. updated and I could enable it again. Only after 7-10 times of booting HoTS it goes back into not working so I just disable sync, delete folder, hit update and I can play again until I started Battle.net 7-10 times again.

Once those daily updates are gone it should be working normally again.

EDIT:
NVM it broke again and not even this fix is working anymore for me…
