Dev team is testing 1-3-2 internally

For those of you who missed it:

tl;dr: It’s just an experiment at this stage and might not ever become a thing; it would change the game significantly and would require rework to off tanks. Playtests show that it actually isn’t as bad as one would think; some testers said it feels more like original OW (where having only one tank was the norm)

Millions of skynets suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.

Told ya its a question of time until they ditch 2-2-2. Its an untenable position given the playerbase we have, unless you wanna lose all your players within a year.

They should get rid of it entirely, not being able to swap roles on the fly is a failed concept at its core.

They come to realise something that many of us, Flex players, already knew :
Triple DPS is a legit comp and actually works at the same level as 222.

The offtank is basically a guardian for the main tank and its mostly doing DPS so yeah, if you take out Road/Zarya/Dva and put a Mei, Reaper or Junk, its basically the same function with different tools.

I disagree. Having seperate SR for the roles was the best decision. I’m a flex player, but I’m just horrible at tank. I didn’t know that, and before role queue swapped to tank when I thought we needed one; even when I wanted to play DPS, but I never really climbed.

Turns out my tank is just so much worse than my other roles. I’m plat in DPS and support, but my tank is currently high silver and still dropping.

When I want to play tank, I can queue for it without fear that I’m throwing, because I get matched against silvers instead of plats.

It’s also nice to be actually able to play DPS when you want to. It used to be that you had 5 players wanting to DPS and somebody deciding to take one for the team and swapping to tank or support which he didn’t want to play.

1-3-2 is as legit as 3-1-2, 4-0-2, or any other comp if you balance the game around that. 2-2-2 was the comp that was best for the way the heroes were designed. Jeff even talks about how they need to change heroes to make 1-3-2 work.

Also, having only one tank will put enormous pressure on that player. Guess who will be blamed when your team loses? The widow that missed every shot but nobody noticed, or the Rein that failed to block the earthshatter?

I’m pretty certain that queue times won’t decreases that much, as there will be much fewer tank players available then there are currently. But maybe I’m wrong.

1-3-2 wont be better or worse than 2-2-2, it will just be different. If it means shorter queue times for everybody, great. Although my fear is that 1-3-2 OW will feel more like a traditional FPS than TF2. Personally, I have no interest in a CoD-style shooter. It’s just not my cup of tea.

true, thats why next to shorter queues we need the flexibility for more than 1 tank if there is a player willing to help out. Currently the rq would prevent this and thats why it has to go.
Separate SR for the roles is a nice gimmick but it obviously doesn’t go well with the rest of the game which is collapsing around it - lack of flexibility, static slots and murderous queue times are no good for the overall health of OW.

thats why you rely on someone else playing tank?

I’m scared of what the future holds for my Australian boy

Wrong, they tested it and found it didn’t work.

Dps players are happy to screw over healers and tanks if it means they get their way.

off-tanks would no longer exist and tanks would have to become raid bosses.

not that trolls like kete have the brains to remotely realise this.

that’s why it was just an experiment, and one they’re not going to make live.

Pahahahaha the dumbest troll on the eu server can’t read.

it was tested, it didn’t work, it got binned.

they aren’t ditching 222 which works just fine. You dumb kids aren’t the entireity of the game.

they should just perma ban you and change your name to the special-ed-kid

Triple dps has never been a legit comp and never will be.

they want to have less dps whining over the forums, that’s it.

I love how you’re this dumb when Jeff himself literally stated they aren’t making it live nor going with it, because of the myriad of problems.

141 is bad

From a design perspective we were reluctant for a number of reasons. Before implementing 2/2/2 role queue, we had done experiments with the team compositions being 1 Tank, 1 Support and 4 damage. The playtests under a 4-1-1 comp were terrible. The problem was the solo support. As a solo support, you felt unable to keep the rest of the team alive. Added to that, at all times, you had 5 very aggressive players prioritizing you as the target every time. As soon as the support player on one side died, the entire team would fall like a house of cards.

So much for your “it’s how it was designed” garbage. And here is where he states it was just an experiment and not coming to the game

Blockquote
So it’s been a really interesting and fun experiment. We’re not really confident that it’s the correct thing for the game

He also states they aren’t doing this sort of overhaul for the game in terms of the tanks because of the sheer amount of work required and what it does to off-tanks.

Blockquote
Now, don’t freak out. We’re not doing this for 2-2-2… I am only sharing the design experiment that’s going on here. Maybe a better direction for Roadhog under 3-2-1 is some sort of team damage reduction ability? How do you take what is essentially an “off tank” and make him a “main tank”? That is what we would have to explore with any of these tank characters. Since the Tank roster is already one of the more limited character selections, we’re obviously not crazy about removing choice from Tank players. And if our stated goal is to improve queue times, did going to 1 tank actually remove a bunch of otherwise tank players from the queue? Or were some of these “tank” players actually damage players who wanted a faster queue time so they picked Roadhog?

Meaning they have to overhaul the off-tank category to the point of it no longer exists

Have you even read his extremely long post? Looks like you haven’t, otherwise you wouldn’t have posted such crap that was so easy to stomp on.

You DPS players are not, never have been and never will be all of the players. You’re not a huge majority like you claim (and throw random % out for yet never supply evidence for) and you are not more important than other roles.

222 is not an untenable position, it’s the correct position. All roles treated equally.

Separate SR fits in just fine with the game, which isn’t collapsing.

DPS queue times don’t matter, and will always remain irrelevant.

Please continue to post garbage that’s easily refuted - it’s hilarious

flex players, meaning i’ll pick tank or healer until I think the DPS aren’t doing their job, then I’ll switch to DPS and refuse to switch back.

Triple DPS will never be a legit comp, and is nowhere near 222, never has and never will be. You can keep bleating the same trolling crap (and refuse to post evidence for it), it doesn’t make it true.

This makes no sense anymore.
The 222 system was a dirty solution for one problem.
The long queue is a result of that dirty solution, and now they’ll just look for another dirty solution to solve that second problem and hopefully this one sticks and solves everything.
I think they don’t care anymore, OW2 will fix everything. Everyone can go home folks, no issues here.

they move away from 2-2-2 and eventually going to complete dump the rq as they see that it doesn’t work in no constellation.

OW2 is just a pve extension to OW.

ez solution, you queue for dps, and you only play dps, but the rank is just one, The stupidity in creating 3 separate ranks, made ppl playing mercy when they are zarya mains, playing orisa when they are moira mains and so on. In overall, the game its more unbalanced than ever. The player base its going down and fast, to games out there that give us the freedom to choose , when it was us that spent money…

No, they won’t move away from it. RQ works just fine.

Except it isn’t going down fast but grats on still posting inane stupidity. If it were, DPS queues would be going down.

Simple math kid.

If they are going the 1-3-2 route, they should just ditch role q altogether and admit it didn’t work because it will pretty much void the need for non-main tanks in the game like Zarya. Ever pick Zarya in a 1-3-2 role q and the entire team will start whining at the start that they need a main shield tank instead.

Blizzzard, do the noble thing and reverse this role q thing before you make things even worse.

thats what I’m saying too.

Blizzard is not precisely famous for going back on their changes, specially the big ones.
They will beat around the bush, destroying part of the forest in the process, but they will not chop the tree. :man_shrugging:
