In our last study.
“Overwatch Statistics: What are the Chances of a Team Consisting of Only DPS Heroes Winning”.
We came to the conclusion that a team with 6 DPS Heroes have ruffly a 30% chance of winning against a well balanced team. By balanced, I mean a team including 2 healers, 2 tanks and 2 DPS Heroes. Another thing we learned was that some DPS Heroes are more useful the others, particularly heroes with a high Self- sustainability (i.e. Bastion, Mei, Soldier 76, Sombra, etc).
One guy pointed out that a team with high Self-sustainability always has an advantage against teams that don’t. That got me thinking. Does a team have an advantage if they have high self-sustainability. And that is what we tend to find out.
I organized a team consisting of only 6 support Heroes, got in to Quick Play 11 times and took note on what happened. Support heroes are the most self-sustaining since they can directly or indirectly heal themselves. The teams we were up against were for the most part balanced (i.e. 2-2-2). Our team consisted of the entire supporting roster, since there are only 6 supporting heroes as of making this study. The maps and game modes were picked at random since the study was conducted in Quick Play.
This is the result:
Game 1: Lost
Game 2: Won
Game 3: Lost
Game 4: Won
Game 5: Lost
Game 6: Lost
Game 7: Lost
Game 8: won
Game 9: Won
Game 10: Lost
Game 11: Won
Or to put it simply, 5 wins, 6 loses over the course of 11 rounds in Quick Play. Take the number of wins divided by the total number of rounds and take the answer times 100 to get your estimate. A team’s chances of winning when only containing Support Heroes is 45.5%.
The chance of winning is certainly higher then the chance of a DPS team.
Other interesting things to note regarding a support team is that when it’s going good for the team it usually goes good right until the end. As long as the team can keep each other alive their ultimates will generate 2 times faster, from healing and from doing damage.
A supporting team is also a force to be recon with when considering their ability combos, which charge up quickly since ultimate charge is all around them. A rallying Brigitte, nano busted, with a healing orb from Zenyatta is almost impossible for a unorganized team to take down and that excludes the rest of her team providing firepower behind her.
I haven’t heard of any comp exclusively using Support Heroes. But with the
up-and-coming hero 30 rumored to be a Support Hero, and blizzard’s trend of making Support Heroes that are also good damage dealers, a comp consisting of mostly or only Support Heroes might someday be used in professional matches.
Side Note:
I’m aware of the possible flaws in my calculations. For example, this was only tested in Quick Play and only calculated the average of 11 rounds, the more data you have the more accurate the calculations become. Feel free to send me your own calculations. The statistics does not take in to account the skill of individual players rather the team as a whole. The study also treated every game mode and map equally even though certain heroes have an advantage on specific maps. I was going to take the average of 10 games but I went one step beyond.
