Overwatch Statistics: What are the Chances of a Team Consisting of only DPS Heroes Winning

People who play Overwatch talk about how good it is when a team is balanced. By that they most of the time mean a team consisting of 2 tanks, 2 healers and 2 DPS Heroes, or 3 tanks and 3 Healers. But many players, especially at lower ranks, often run out of spawn with 4 or more DPS Heroes thinking that their skill will ultimately win the game. But is that true, I wondered one day. Rests the fate of the game on individual DPS players or the team as a whole. I made an experiment to fins out.

I got in to Quick Play with a team made up of 6 DPS Heroes 10 times to fins out what the chances are of winning. This is what I found out:

Game count

  1. Round Lost

  2. Round Lost

  3. Round Lost

  4. Round Won

  5. Round Lost

  6. Round Lost

  7. Round Won

  8. Round Lost

  9. Round Lost

  10. Round won

Or to put it simply 3 wins and 7 losses over the course of 10 rounds. Take the number of wins divided with the total number of rounds and multiply the answer with 100 to get the statistics. The chances of team consisting of 6 DPS heroes winning is 30 %. Your team is at a great disadvantage…

Remember to get of Hanzo every once in a while kids…

Side note:
I’m aware that there are some flaws in this calculation. For one, This is based on an average of 10 matches, the more data you have the more accurate the result will be. Feel free to send me more data so that I can make more accurate calculations. Second, I took notes of the probable reason why we won. For example, In round 4 we had a bastion and a soldier 76 that healed. In round 7 we also had a bastion. And in round 10 we were playing against literal potatoes.

Pretty much impossible to calculate, there are too much variables :

-were you 6-stacked, against another 6-stack for the 10 games ? (no since you mentionned the 10th game’s potato players)
-Were you all on characters you have mastered, or did supp/tank players “fill” DPS roles ?
-What rank were you competing as ? (qp so hard to tell with mmr)
-Were the enemies counter picking and tryharding, was your team doing so ?
-And so on, so yeah quite hard to generalize without raw stats

I’ve had a ranked game a while ago where we all were soloQ and chose 6 dps, saying in voice “everybody pick your better character” and we rolled the enemy 2-2-2 on KOTH. For the record this was a diamond game, and I had so much fun, I’d like to try it again sometime !

PS : Hanzo is love, hanzo is life

You missed a crucial aspect of the data: what comp did your opponents run? Because 6 DPS against 6 DPS is a clean 50%. If you had that 5 or 6 times and won 3 of those, that would mean your chance of winning against more balanced comps is 0%.

As you rightfully mentioned, self-sustain is relevant. Bastion, Mei, Soldier, Sombra, Reaper, Symm/Tracer will fair better than McCree, DF, Genji, Pharah, Torb, Junk.

Also, what map are you playing? When you have a payload healing you or the spawn close on 2CP defense, you can get away with more.

@Pizza: a) You made me hungry. b) A good story to learn from, but also only a single game. With tons of MH under my belt, I can say that 6 supp vs 6 DPS is a blowout in favor of the supports (unless you get 6 Mercys or some Bastions), 6 tanks vs 6 DPS isn’t even a contest and 6 tanks vs 6 supports favors the tanks, but it usually depends on what role the respawns are (fights take a looooooooooooooong time with 6 Lucios vs 6 Zaryas (to dial it up to 11)).
MH also shows that 2-1-3 can be viable if the solo healer knows their role well (and isn’t Zen), whereas 1-2-3 is much more precarious and fragile (and the tank pretty much has to be Rein).

I got in to a game with 6 DPS heroes in Quick Play. Sometimes the enemy team was balanced with 2-2-2 and sometimes not. The last round, game 10, the enemy team had a balanced 2-2-2 team and we were all DPS. We won surprisingly! So my guess is that a balanced team doesn’t guaranty a clean victory.

The map we played on was totally random (It was Quick Play after all).

Thank you for checking out my work it took me an entire day to complete

ps: Next I’ll do 6 healers, wish me luck
