Remove Placements

Ok, so I haven’t really realised this until my Season 11 placements. But they are literally the most frustrating, inaccurate and overall abusive things in OW.

First of all, it allows throwers and trolls to be at their prime, and completely destroy people’s chances of ever climbing in ranked before they ever receive their rank. Placement’s also lead to a lot of frustration because I mean. The way they are put, you think if you do well you will be able to climb out of a rank. Do you wanna know one thing that doesn’t go with frustration?

Losing

If you lose a placement or the majority of your placements it’s gonna lead to frustration in-game, which consequently leads to being toxic. I’ve noticed a lot of people starting off nice in game, and then when we begin to lose. They get toxic. I mean, I can’t blame em. Placement’s put a lot of pressure on people to do well, because they think if they don’t then they’re screwed for the rest of the season.

My last point is, they’re completely pointless. I mean, it’s not like in the next 2-3 days (off-season) you’re going to have improved so much that you would get out of a rank. If you think about it literally, a season ends and then the next one starts 2-3 days later. You’re not going to have drastically changed and become a pro in 3 days.

So, overall the reason I think placements are just completely pointless is because they open up so much room for trolls, frustrate a lot of people and really mean nothing.

If you disagree, please tell me why.

??? How what why? I mean you can climb even if you do only placements every seasons.

How??? What? Do you know how the system works? Id assume you dont have the slightest clue.

Pretty much yeah. But then again this completely shatters your earlier arguments. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Idk what placement’s you’ve played but the majority of mine have had throwers in who purposely mess up peoples placements. And placements do frustrate people and make them think that if they do bad in these then they are going to get a terrible rank. I’ve solo queued all of my placements, and lost the majority. Now I’m mid plat, when I was Diamond last season. I don’t see how thats accurate… 10 games determine what rank you get, and those 10 games are where trollers try to f*ck you up. If you’re in a group then it’s fine.

You are claiming 2 points:

  1. Placement matches are frustrating

This is highly subjective. It always depends on your overall mentality. The main issue you have is the fact that you care too much on winning but hear me out before you think you shouldn’t try in comp games:

During your games, you get so desperate to win that you start to be afraid, afraid to mess up and afraid to lose. Furthermore, when you lose, it feels more devastating because all your effort was for nothing. You start looking for reasons why you lost and start blaming others or yourself.

But what if you change your mentality towards the game?
What if you change it from this…

I have to win! I can not lose!

…to this…

I want to win but I don’t mind defeat, as long I gave my best!

What’s the difference? The objective in your game! The first mentality requires you to win the game but the second one requires you to play at your best performance, no matter the outcome.

You stop caring about the when and start caring about the now.

Stop regretting the past, stop fearing the future and embrace the present!

With that mentality, I at least can play any game without the feeling of frustration. It doesn’t matter whether I win or lose. It matters that I gave my best.

  1. Placement matches are pointless

Now that one is worth discussing!
It is difficult to determine it’s worth because we don’t know how placement matches exactly work.

One speculation is that the placement matches has a low impact on your SR because it’s determined by your MMR. That would render placement matches basically useless.

Another reason for its lack of usefulness is something you mentioned:

However, that would disregard players who skipped competitive seasons and who might have gotten better or even worse. That especially asks the question how placements work.

The only reason I see for having placement matches would be the illusion of a structured competition:

If the placement matches really are pointless, then they only exist to give the competitive season some sort of structure. You start the competition by showing “how good you are” in the placement matches. You get your SR and start the real fight.

If placement matches don’t exist, players would jump right into the chaos and might feel overwhelmed.

However, these arguments are mostly anecdotal, just like any argument on this matter. It would be useful to know how placement matches work. Then we could determine a lot better wether placement matches could be removed or not.

No excuse for getting toxic (win or lose), people need to learn to be more mature with their approach and keep things in perspective (maybe easier when you’re 44 like me).

Last season my placements went 2-8 pretty horrible s***. It didnt prevent me from climbing or anything.

If they do bad they get bad rank. If they do close to what their last season end was they place close to that.

Then you played much worse. Or you were lucky/boosted last season.

Well why dont you use LFG if you think so?

I disagree simply because in placements, Preformance is the only thing that matters, not if you win or lose. If you did well in all your 10 games, lots of gold medals and all that, you will be placed high even if you lose all 10 matches. it is outside of the placements where winning is the only thing that matters, assuming you are diamond or higher, if not then PBSR still applies after that.
I wish this wasn’t true, I wish wnning was all that mattered and that the gold medeals were just fluff, but the truth is, those gold medals are everything in placements, get them and get lots of them and you will be fine

It dosen’t stop you from climbing. But it puts you in a bad mindset for the rest of the season.

I climbed from mid plat to diamond through like 3 seasons. 3 season’s worth of solo queueing my way to Diamond, to then be completely reversed by 10 matches.

No, there isn’t you’re right. But it’s OW. You’re going to get people that do, and it puts the whole team down.

How can one days games put you in a bad mind set for like 2 months or w/e the seasons lasts now?

I skipped one season. The season before that I ended like 1 game away from masters. Next season I played for the very first time against golds in placements with this account. I was baffled. I placed in plat. But then again I dont belong in plat so I climbed out and got masters again.

I’ll be honest, I feel like either if I get 10 wins or 10 losses, it usually places me close to where I ended last season…

If you get a crap rank after your placements, you’re just gonna want to give up. It isn’t going to ‘encourage you to do better’.

¯_(ツ)_/¯ I cant see why tho. Like said what happened to me and it affected me 0. just some easy games for a while until I reached a rank I was supposed to be.

Theoretically it shouldn’t be hard to get back to the rank you are supposed to be. Imagine being diamond, then getting sent back to mid plat because of 10 placement games that are inaccurate. I mean… I don’t want to continue playing this season because knowing what you should be, and what you are just puts you off. I don’t have the patience and the drive to want to get back to Diamond because I know it’s going to take forever with the amount of trolls, smurfs, leavers in my games. 10 matches can severely affect your rank, even if you just got unlucky.

In plat you even have the performance bonus. It shouldnt be a task at all if your really a diamond.

That’s true. But it’s more of a ‘can I really be bothered to get back to a rank I was wrongly taken out off’ than a task to climb back up. I’m not saying I wont climb back up. But why should I have to? Because 10 placement’s f*cked me up.

Wrongly? OMEGALUL sure sure.

When I’m Diamond one season, and mid plat the next. I think it’s safe to assume I haven’t just become 300-400SR worse over a 3 day period.

Yeah or you just got lucky and peaked. I mean ive gone 2-8 in placements and lost 50sr. Last season I went 3-7 placements and lost like ~100.

I could have just gotten lucky you’re right. But let’s take someone else for example. Let’s say they didn’t get lucky and where meant to be in a higher rank. I mean, going back to the overall point. Placements are just 1) a waste of time 2) inaccurate 3) frustrating 4) troll paradise and 5) Punishing.

  1. play few games 2) back to own rating
