Thoughts on Marvel Rivals?

Marvel Rivals released around late S14.

Which will probably coincide with the tests. Will it just be a cheap token gesture to try keep people while MR is in its infancy… Probably.

Lethal Company however, a game with many many issues has achieved 97% overly positive reviews from over 350,000 players originally made by one single person. Just shows that if you make a game that the community wants, you can achieve highly positive reviews on Steam.

Make a bad one (thank you for providing the example Blizzard) then you get highly negative reviews.

Almost like they didn’t annoy a large section of their community by ending a distribution deal… That will impact things somewhat.

Apparently all heroes unlocked and free to play at launch…

Huge…

Probably because they’re confident they can make money on the skins (thanks to popular IP and game being in third person so players see their skins)…

“Marvel Rivals is currently in its closed beta, and it’s a big hit. However, while the game is drawing big crowds fast, acclaim has not come so readily towards its battle pass model. The major issue around this battle pass is the way in which it can be progressed; rather than XP being granted through success in gameplay, players must complete challenges to get further in the pass. Not only are there many problems with this approach, but it’s been proven as a dud by MultiVersus—a game that’s been made all the more controversial through this system.”

If this is true, its a big woops.

So long as they don’t do the divy option like Blizzard of putting heros behind paywalls while they’re buffed so much they break the matchmaking, they should be fine - fancy not matching tank vs tank who have the same set of heros :joy: Very fair matchmaking there Blizzard. The beta recieved great reviews which is good to see. Nice to see Blizzard finally having some competition.

I was an ok reception. But there’s quite a lot of negative reviews.

The games ok. Nothing out of this world, fun to play with friends, but it feels a little cheaply made and lacks that punch other more polished games have. Hopefully come December they’ll have fixed that. Be nice to have something else in the rotation.

I wonder if people will hold it to account when it start charging silly prices for cosmetics like they do with OW. Would be weird behaviour if they didn’t.

Yep outside of pay-to-win I don’t really care about how they monetize it…

It’s the gameplay that matters most at the end of the day…

The way I look at it…

If they want to charge $500 per skin - is it going to affect me personally or how I interact with the game?

The answer for me is no so they should just do whatever is profitable…

If I was in charge of the game I’d have some ultra exclusive/rare skins at ultra high price…

:smile_cat:

Hulk talking sense for once. Agree.

It will be monitised within an inch of its life. NetEase will want to cream as much money as quick as they can because they know it’ll only have a limited shelf life.

You seen that one of the other “Overwatch killer” games is dead already. Sony are taking Concord down after 2 weeks and refunding players.

Bet it comes back as a f2p game in a year or so.

Exactly. Unfortunately Blizzard never thought about it like that. You can tell they don’t play their own game to any competitive level and likely lack the experience from playing other games based on that stupid idea alone.

And it won’t have role lock thank goodness…

:smirk_cat:

Oh… well… RIP.

That will no doubt come in time once they realise.

Good to see that the predictions about excessively aggressive monetisation were proven totally wrong…

Netease has absolutely delivered and defied all expectations…

:smirk_cat: :+1:

True. It’s nice to be wrong on this one.

But, other than not be having an time limit on BPs, they’ve just priced everything around OW prices. So it’ll be interesting to see if people are just as militant about it.

Especially when the BPs go to full price and it’s not got quite as much stuff.

If by some chance Netease developers are reading this…

Don’t introduce RQ…

Ever…

Nothing will kill the game quicker especially when it’s really refreshing to hit the queue button and instantly get into a game right now…

That alone puts it ahead of Overwatch…

Instead simply add a global self healing passive so teams aren’t as reliant on healers…

Sounds like from a lot of the discourse online that it is very much needed, certainly in ranked modes.

Probably not so much in quick play.

RQ = stale and sterile gameplay…

Hope MR avoids it…

:pouting_cat:

Seems to be a popular request (for ranked at least) so it will come soon enough.

For now I’ve parked the game, it is fun in places, but it is so poorly optimised and the sound design is just awful makes it really annoying to play for more than about 20 minutes.

Thank goodness…
