@Marten
Doesn’t make it a lie. And in fiction interesting is more important than equal. I wish they would introduce heroes from other cultures before adding female representation from others.
We could do with an Irish, Southern American, Philippine, Greek, Argentinian, Apache, and/or Mongolian hero before we need another Korean. I wouldn’t be opposed to a San Franciscan hero who’s trans so long as they don’t get clingy.
@Endeavour
That’s more due to the fact that if they made a female character fat, ugly, dumb or whatever else, less people would want to play her. It’s amazing that a character as old as Anna is so popular.
And it has to be said that this is a bias in both men and women. Most women would gladly have the body of any Overwatch heroin. They don’t want to be as fat as Road Hog. They would however like to have some fun with Road Hog. …in bed.
Fat, ugly, or stupid men are ok because most women are attracted confidence, competence, and power. Fat, ugly, and dumb women aren’t ok because most men are attracted to body parts that appear healthy. From “Still got it Anna”, to “Thick thighs save lives” Mei, to “Death by snusnu” Zarya.
They could add a Trigglypuff hero to represents the fat, ugly, stupid, “I will beat you with a bike lock if you don’t call me what I tell you to call me” crowd But that wouldn’t make any sense because neither men or women would want to play her… him? …zer? …that thing.
Yeah, no. You are most likely referring to tracers victory pose change. The reason for that was because it was out of character. And where did widow got desexualized?
Also, the male hero roster is as diverse as the female hero roster: DJ, soldier, scientist, madman, cyborg ninja, engineer, madman, a big boi.
The are even more diverse in terms of body shape, too.
See, I would have a problem with that. I have a big problem with changing or creating characters to fit an SJW agenda, just like I’d have the same problem if they were created to fit an anti-SJW agenda. However, there’s no proof that this is the case with the OW cast. Having a lesbian character isn’t proof of any agenda other than that the designers wanted a character with a love interest, which authors have been creating since the dawn of time. In the same vein, them creating a genius doctor character who is female is not proof of anything other than that the designer wanted a genius doctor who happens to be female.
The only agenda should be to make interesting characters that the designers wanted to make. You can’t put authors on trial because you identify patterns in their character designs. They are free to be creative.
Again, you’re the ones creating this “problem”. You’ve identified a pattern, and you’re the ones who are upset by that.
So, keeping in mind my gender, let’s take my favourite movie of all time. It’s The Good the Bad and the Ugly. So in this movie, the 3 main characters are male, every other character is male bar one exception, which is a female whore who appears in one scene to get smacked around by Angel Eyes, and she basically cries and gives up the information almost right away. Not a very strong female character, right?
Does this make The Good the Bad and the Ugly a bad movie? By your logic, I should be horribly offended and hate it, right? Well, I don’t. I consider it to be the greatest master piece ever put to film. Why? Because the director was free to tell a story. His only agenda was to tell that story in the best way that he knew how.
That’s good story telling. That’s what I want from my media. Interesting characters that the author wanted to create. The gender of the characters in TGtBatU are irrelevant. People may have noticed that Ashe is basically a female Angel Eyes. Does it matter to me that Blondie (The Good) is basically Mcree and Ashe (The Bad) is basically Angel Eyes? Not in the slightest.
Diverse in looks, not in personality, neither are they in professions. Her victory pose was changed cause of feminist agenda, she also got her butt reduced. Same for widow as i am aware.
Well just to add it in here, in the span of new characters they have added to the game, they added one lesbian, a character i am quite alright with, seeing as gay people is a rather substantial part of nature. We also have a transgender/crossdresser in Moira, why ? Where was the need for adding that into the lore and story ?
I don´t have a problem with the cast, i merely came across a forums post, with somone who might have and actually commented facts around the amount of females to males in the game, how few females play this game, psychology and a general trend with the female characters contra the males.
Other than this i also have seen the “Diversifying” quite interesting, when we begin adding more and more things to the mix.
As a sidenote, they didn´t start out with Tracer being gay, it suddenly just happened through the story, why wasn´t it added early on in the lore or other, that she has a GF etc. It was cause some of blizzards moves are sudden and without much groundwork. That is mostly the reason, why the gay Tracer, sparked the outcry it did.
Lets start with giving mercy some actuall swiss voices lines, she’s not german!!!
Srsly i was so hyped to hear mercy is swiss, and every hero (sombra, mei, Reinhardt, widow, ana…) all have voice lines in the country language. But mercy? Yeah just give her some german lines nobody will realize it.
Widows case was due to a funny feature in the beta version where her butt inflated when she used her ult. Tracers pose… again, out of character. This video should explain it very well:
And do I really need to list the personalities in a nutshell?
Soldier: serious
Reaper: edgy
Reinhardt: man of honor
Lucio: jumpy
Winston: rational
Roadhog: brutal
Junkrat: crazy
Hanzo: serious
Genji: calm
Yeah, even in personality they are just as distinct as the female roster.
Well, when you count Orisa as female, you have to count Hammond as male. It’s just that you’re a little snowflake that thinks having 14 male and 14 female heroes (Bastion being definitely undefinable, Zen and Orisa balancing out with 1 “male” and 1 “female” robot) is unfairly balanced. Dude, I get that you have a hard time talking to women, it shows, but around 50% of the world population are female, which makes it fairly likely that out of 28 people only 14 are male. Why whine so much about it?
And if you say that I’m overly generalizing the professions…
You did it, too.
In the end, there is no objective reason why the female hero roster is more diverse than the male hero roster. I’m suspecting that you have a subjective reason why you precieve the female roster to be more diverse than the male ones and the reason is simple:
Males in video games became dull.
In the video game media, men have been portrayed in many different ways. However, when you get exposed by the said diversity, you start to get used to it. When a game is starring a diverse male roster, you won’t find it that interesting because you simply got used to male diversity (character design wise, of course). However, there were fewer games with a diverse female roster so, logically speaking, you haven’t got used to female diversity. This leads to your situation of overwatch.
When the game has a diverse roster of male and female heroes, only the female hero roster strike to be interesting because, subconsciously, you already expected a diverse male hero roster.
You cannot call the the men as diverse as the women, when the biggest diversifying heroes for the males are a monkey and a hamster, those are basically in their separate category.
Of course not, because you are denying everything I prove you wrong.
I show you that males are as diverse as women in terms of looks; You deny it.
I show you that males are as diverse as women in terms of personality; You deny it.
I show you that males are as diverse as women in terms of professions; you deny it.
In the end, you simply got used to the diversity of male character to a point you don’t even recognize it. You only notice the female diversity and not the male ones because you don’t care about male diversity anymore.
Men: Some are short, some are tall, some are in the middle, some are fat, some are muscular, some are slim, some are skinny, some are somewhere in the middle, some are old, some are young, some are in the middle, two of them are animals.
Women: one is slightly chubby (Mei), two are muscular (Zarya, Brig), one is an animal and the others are all slim. Yes, there are 10 slim/fit female characters, such diversity. 3 of them (Mei, Tracer, Sombra) are below the average female height of 5’6", the rest is taller.
To put it bluntly: the men are all over the place, the women are built to classical beauty standards. I mean even Ana is kinda hot, and she’s 60.
They arent as diverse in looks, they aren´t as diverse in personality, i mean you even made up personalities that have never existed. They certainly aren´t in professions and intelligence and “Titles”. Most of the females in the game are the top of the top, unlike the men. The only two cases that some what help you are hammond and winston, not men, might be a male gorilla and a male hamster, but they aren´t humans.
