Unable to initialize audio device. Please ensure your selected audio format and drivers are up to date.

I’ve been getting the following error since restarting Warcraft 3 today. I’ve tried restarting my laptop, I’ve reinstalled the sound driver& the game as well to no effect.
Running on an ASUS ROG Strix GL503VD windows 10
It worked fine until now and other games still run without any problems.
Only have 1 sound output device according to my system settings.

Looking here does not provide any help either, turning my laptop to mono sound still gives the same issue. Troubleshooted to no avail.

Any ideas or pointers?

Just a small summary of some of the steps that have been working:

  • Switch to 5.1 Surround.
  • Nahimic and Sonic Studio/Radar can cause this issue.
  • Switch sound devices.
  • Running the audio troubleshooter in windows.
  • Turning off Sound Effects & Enhancements
  • Update Audio drivers
  • Disable Audio devices - Operating System Sound Settings - Blizzard Support

The main one from the thread seems you might want to set your sound to Stereo.

Hopefully you can get it working again :).

Already got sound on stereo.

Deleting sonic studio&sonic radar seemed to allow WC3 to run again. The sound seems a lot less lively than when I had it installed though. Gonna take some getting used to lol.
