I am trying to play WoW with my son. I have two WoW accounts on the same Battle.net account. The primary account has The War Within, the second only has a WoW subscription.
We can play WoW Classic together just fine, but when trying to do the same in retail I am dumbfounded by how hard it is to figure out how or even why we cannot group up in-game.
I have an active (annual) subscription to World of Warcraft on both WoW accounts.
As part of trying to figure this out I’ve gone ahead and created my son his own Battle.net account and installed WoW, but NOT bought any subscription. By adding this account as a Real ID friend I was able to group up in game in wow retail.
What am I doing wrong? I would like to not have to pay for 3 subscriptions to be able to play both wow classic and wow retail together with my son.
Well I think problem here is obvious, wow classic requires only sub to play that’s why you have no problems to group up. Retail you have to have any sort of retail version to play so since one acc has tww and second has none - you can’t play together. I might be wrong, but I believe this is how it is.
I have the same, you can group just fine but you cannot use the real id because you are already using it, when you log into one wow account the other is automatically kicked off Bnet because you are using the same Real ID.
You can add the character name to your freinds list and group this way.
I have 1 battlenet account and just like you, multiple WoW accounts on it. When i log in with account 1 and log into account 2, I have no problem grouping up. I just do a /inv namechar. And i’m in a group with my alt from the other account.
I just tested it with one that has retail and one that hasn’t yet and also working fine. How are you trying to group up? You can only have one real-id on your battlenet.
Alternativly you can ad the characters your son is playing to the same guild and invite from the guildlist.
Remember though, you might end up grouping and not being able to see each other, because a lot of content is phased and if one of you has done those parts/quests it won’t let you see each other in game.
Edit: You can add your son’s characters name to your frindslist btw, just the name. You should be able to invite from there by rightclicking on the name when he’s online
Not sure what you are doing as I just created a second WoW starter edition account, created a character on the same realm. Logged in and could find my other character, add as a friend and be in the same group (same realm).
I did find that cross-realm, I could invite to party but I couldn’t add friend at first. To overcome this, I had both characters in the same place, in a party, then I could right click the other character’s display frame and add to friend list.
If you want to do this for cross faction too then it gets more complicated.
What you are describing works exactly as expected in WoW Classic, but not in retail for some reason. I have tried to add a in game character friend by typing /friend and it says player not found. For this particular attempt we both created level 1 blood elves on the same realm and chose sunstrider isle. I would not expect multiple layers there as it’s not a populated area.
I appreciate all the responses and will probably give this another attempt later when able to make sure I’m not doing something weird.
Are you 100% sure both characters on the same realm? Retail UI is extremely convoluted and you might think that you are on the same realm but you are not.
May be try to create a group in custom LFG on one character and join on another.
Maybe another possibility to solve the problem. Create your own guild/community where you add yourself and your son and from there be able to invite each other without needing to use bent/friends list.
My understanding is you need to buy the game on each of the two accounts.
I have one Battle.net account, two game accounts, and two subscriptions. I log on one computer with Acc#1, then my daughter logs on a different computer with Acc#2. We can then team up and play together with no problems.
I may be missing something, but it still says this on the Battle.et help page: -
Note: You will need to purchase World of Warcraft—as well as game time—for each World of Warcraft account you wish to play.
What way are you trying to invite him? The easiest way is to be in the same guild or community, then it is just right-click on the name in the userlist and invite.
I have made a special privat community just for myself so I can group up with my twink. Can also use /inv username-server
