144hz monitor: is there a point?

Hello, fellow g3m4rs.

I was wondering whether there’s a point to get a high refresh rate monitor for WoW.
I know that tech youtubers say they’ve noticed a difference in smoothness just from jumping from 60 to 90 on their phones, so surely there must be benefits, right?

I’ve never seen any monitor above 60hz in person. I have no idea how it looks like.
Do you guys have a high refresh rate monitor? Did you see an improvement? Is it worth getting one, even if I don’t play the type of game that benefits the most from it (FPS)?

Hey, i have 144hz monitor. Previously i had 60hz. Difference is real when you run games at 144fps or higher. Bigest difference was on cs go and overwatch or any other fast games like doom and etc - unreal smoothness during fast pased gameplay. For wow not so much. It seems same, but slightly better feel when turning around quickly. These monitors tend to have additional settings which you can turn on that are meant for other type games like mmo, rts and etc.

Basically you see less blur or ghosting when moving around with a higher refresh screen.

I mostly recommend it for shooters but you will notice a difference in WOW as well.

Do you have the GPU to back it up ?

Blade Stealth 13’s MX150. The game currently runs flawlessly at high settings.
I think the powerful CPU helps more than the GPU in my case.

If you can’t get high frames then there’s no point in getting a high refresh monitor.

My WoW can go over 100fps but because I have a 60Hz monitor I cap it at 60.

I have a 165Hz monitor. For WoW it’s not super valuable. Like Someoneelse says, it’s the fps that ends up being the limiting factor.
But for certain other games it’s nice. Not crucial or anything, just nice. The motions are more smooth.

Ironically, you quickly get used to it and don’t really think about it until you sit down in front of a 60Hz monitor, then the difference becomes apparent again.

It’s way way more smooth to the eyes, makes a real difference man.

It can be costly but worth it if you’re a gamer.

Do you still enjoy the “convenience” to the point where you’d deem it’s still a worthy investment?

what fps do you get in WoW?

Not really. :yum:
Or rather, I had the money to spare, so I treated myself to something extra fancy.
If I ping-ponged between this and a 60Hz monitor, then I’d probably appreciate it more. But as I said, it quickly becomes the norm and I don’t really think about it.

I am way more liking the fact that it has a nice size and resolution. That’s bang for the buck, so to speak, and something I find a lot more valuable when I play WoW.

I have this one for reference:

The AOC 24G2U/BK is a 1080p/144hz IPS monitor, for only 159,99€ here in France. Sounds like a great deal.
Would you get it if you were in my position?

MX150 Is laptop graphic isnt it ?
You wont be able to run game at 144 fps with this, unless you are at low resolution.

I do own 1440p 144Hz monitor and I clearly see the difference in smoothnes. I feed it with RTX 2070 tho.

No.

I’d invest in a monitor with a bigger size than 23.8" and a resolution higher than 1920x1080.
Mine is a 27" and 2560 x 1440, and I appreciate that a lot more than the high refresh rate.

Ideally you should take a trip to a big electronics store and just go look at their monitors (the demo ones on display). Seeing what the differences between specs are in person is a lot better than just reading it on the internet.

Also, your Blade Stealth 13’s MX150 uses Nvidia, which takes advantage of G-Sync. The AOC 24G2U/BK uses FreeSync, which goes with AMD.

The easy and short answer is no.

This kind of monitors are good for shooter if you have high fps. Then they can give you a small advantage (barely realizable) by being just a bit more accurate in terms of enemy’s positioning when they are moving fast.

Anyways: In a game like WoW high FPS aren’t only unnecessary, but pure waste of money (electricity, lifetime of components). You don’t have any advantage if you play WoW with more than 60 FPS. So a 144HZ monitor wouldn’t have any extra value.
