Sorry, yes I did. That Cata system.
I pull back last comment.
Whilst we already have SoD as a sort-of-Classic+, I like threads like this, it gets me thinking about things that I would enjoy in a hypothetical Classic+ setting.
As a person who dislikes instanced content and especially raids but loves the world of old Azeroth and questing, what I’d personally like would be more open world max level content with class specific repeatable quests and activities, with some limited gear progression (obviously with raiding remaining the only way to get the top items since it’s the most demanding PvE content - I just wish I had more options to my taste at max lvl).
I’d also love to see “meme” specs given some more use as support specs that greatly boost “pure” classes in their role. For example, Feral Druids could also give hit chance with Leader of the Pack, and Feral Faerie Fire would be made baseline at 30 and replaced in the tree by a version of Mangle that increases bleed, poison and critical melee + ranged damage dealt to the enemy by 10%. Enhancement shamans could get a Bloodlust of sorts that increases group melee and ranged attack speed. Similar for caster specs like Balance, Elemental, Shadow etc.
Obviously stuff like this is purely subjective and “what-ifs”, I’m not advocating for such things in Era (OBVIOUSLY) or even in a potential Classic+ down the road. It’s just stuff I’d personally like.
I can relate to some of your wishes. I also prefer the open world to instanced contents, that’s why I avoid mega-servers. Also giving those underdeveloped classes some of their iconic abilities from TBC through WotLK is cool. That’s what they’re currently testing in SoD. Let’s see what they take from that.
World Buffs
I don’t care about WBs. Back in Vanilla, we didn’t use them for raiding. On Alliance, the main city where everyone gathered was Ironforge until Naxx time – Stormwind was usually empty, so people didn’t even receive freebie Onyxia buffs, and I think most people didn’t even know what WBs were.
Pro: they are quintessentially classic and can add some fun while levelling.
Con: they are ruined by other players, who demand that you collect them if you want to raid with them.
My take: I would make WBs ineffective in raid dungeons and battlegrounds (and remove the Chronoboon item) to remove the toxic obsession with them. They should be treated as a fun buff for openworld and casual dungeons.
Class Design
I think it’s important to remember that, back in Vanilla, there were regular patches. And in these patches, classes got frequently fixed and rebalanced. Spell coefficients were tweaked, abilities were changed, talents were changed and moved around, and sometimes a class got a full overhaul (players sometimes got a free talent respec for one of their characters but not others, because only that one class had been modified).
My take: I think the best approach to class design going forward would be that same style. Careful, slow change – not grabbing handfuls of TBC/WotLK talents/abilities and cramming them in to the game. I suspect that SoD is a testbed for various class mechanics. If that is the case, perhaps some of the better ideas will get dripped into classic+. One or two classes at a time. A couple of new abilities and a few tweaked talents at a time. And then the devs watch the community reaction.
World Design
Azeroth all the way!
My take: I think the zones should be left as they are. Add the missing ones (Mount Hyjal, etc.) as level 60 zones (perhaps just for exploration purposes). Add in more dynamic content. We already have Darkmoon Faire and elemental invasions – the latter should be bigger and more impactful. Bring back regular Scourge invasions. Invasions should persist until the players kill them all. Add zone-wide events like the SoD STV event. However, I think any zone-wide events should be on a much longer timer than the STV event. The world map could have some overlay icons to show where events are happening – or perhaps the player would need to interact with some sort of NPC messenger or notice board object to update the map.
Please refrain from posting these long winded content in the forums. It would be far better to resort to create a blog elsewhere.
I am a bit opposed to make zones victims of zone wide events.
Could we use un-mapped zones for this for let people to level in ordinary zones?
