20 years old

20 years is an incredible lifespan for any game !

There any many things I love and dislike in this game. As a fan I want to hear one change they made that you love and one change you feel was a mistake throughout it’s entirety.

Here is mine

One change I love , collectible tabs for pets / mounts and tmog. I don’t like having to carry a mount or pet around in a bag just to use it. Remember having bank tabs full of mogs sets ? I do , I don’t miss it lol

One change I dislike , Introducting character boosts in the game shop. I think race change , name changes , faction changes are fine. But being able to buy a character boost fundamentally changed the game is a very negative way.
The game should start at lvl 1 ( 10 if an allied race ) instead Blizz made it loud and clear level 80 is where the game starts. It turns a enormous world into 4 zones only. Ignore 4 continents and two outer worlds , 3 island areas. Only 4 zones matter. Such a big mistake.

I’d say the things that were introduced during the span of time that I’ve been playing that I love most are the group finders, closely followed by delves. Ironically, I’m not using the former because I’m enjoying the latter so much, as the only drama is between Brann and I.

The change I hate is the move from theory crafted skillful rotations to proc-based button mashing.

One change I love: Warbands, as an altoholic i always was a bit frustrated about rep grinds do-overs and gear i couldn’t use and pass on to alts. This feature is great and should be expanded as fast as possible!
One change I dislike: Zone scaling. I miss the days when zones had different level ranges. I really found it fun to sneak into higher zones to get objectives done or gather stuff. But for some reason they made the world less dangerous and adventurous. Sttarting way back with removing elite zones and quests up to scaling of zones…

edit: typo

One thing that I loved that they brought in (this was tough because BfA corruption nearly stole this) was hero talents. I love to roleplay a little in my own head, without actually being an RP guy. I need my character to be believable in the face of world-level threats and with the warlock, DK and upcoming hunter banshee hero talents being brought in, it notched that up x1000 for me and I couldn’t have asked for anything more. Love it!

One thing they changed that I dislike is the removal of the AP grind from Legion. I love the idea of having something to grind towards, just by killing mobs and world rares for as little or as long as I want instead of only being able to do an instanced event - even though I do like Delves a lot.

It really is. We really are lucky and we don’t even know it.

20 years is rookie numbers for a franchise though

The real problem is how people will deal with not having WoW around when it eventually goes away.

20 years is amazing and should be celebrated, but it also means that anyone playing since the start has had the game to play for 20 years, whether they’ve played constantly throughout that 20 years, or dipped in and out, the game was always there.

The guild bank loss issue showed that digital collections can be worth nothing at the blink of an eye.

If they took all the stuff that worked from WoW. Kept the style the same, put it on a new engine that supports multicore CPUs,

Gave us in game voice chat as standard, with more Rp elements,

I’d pay £300 for initial launch price

It’s not rookie numbers for a single game though, especially one that has managed to still have as many players as WoW still does right now after 20 years of existing.

OP specifically mentions the game and is absolutely correct.

Eve online is a Year older :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

One thing they added that felt huge at the time for me, and continues to be something I look forward to, was in-game cutscenes and cinematics. The first of course being the Wrathgate cinematic in WotLK. It was huge at the time and really set a new precedent for storytelling in the game. And I think ever since, in every expansion, the cutscenes and cinematics have continued to elevate the storytelling.

A thing they added which I’ve always really disliked, is Arenas.
Back when Blizzard took their first step into MMORPG PvP design with Alterac Valley, Arathi Basin, and Warsong Gulch, it felt like they had a format that worked well for the game. Large scale battles really played to the game’s and the genre’s strength.
Then came TBC and the introduction of Arenas and the design focus completely shifted to micromanaging class balance in a setting the game wasn’t really made for, alongside an Esport scene that never got off its feet.
And over the years you’ve seen lots of large scale PvP games come out, notably Battle Royales like PUBG and Fortnite, and I can’t help but think that Blizzard missed an opportunity by shifting their focus from large scale Battlegrounds and toward small scale Arenas instead.

One thing I love is Chromie Time and being able to level wherever you like…
Too many thing I hate but I will list a few…

Group finder ( it has destroyed community and interaction )
The new crafting system ( way too complex )
Time-gated content

Everquest is 25 years old :stuck_out_tongue:

True, but the active player number disparity between EVE and WoW is massive.

Edit: massively in favour of WoW.

Thing I love that where implemented where the transmorgefier. I love transmogging. In the past rp’ers would keep their transmog items in their bags and wear the items them selves.

I can’t really come up with a dislike hmm  When they take mounts and transmogs out of the game or make them unobtainable in order to make them more ‘‘special’’ Hate going trough the appearance and the mount tab and spotting an item or mount I like. Only to find out its unobtainable… Its super annoying.
