2080 RTX, 80c in charactar screen, Retail

So… a while ago i noticed that my fans where a bit louder than usual while gaming so started to keep track of the different temps in my PC and noticed while playing WoW the GPU temp was around 80 celsius but when i played BF5 for ex the GPU had more “normal” temps like 60-70 so I started to look through my graphic settings and saw I had resolution scale set to 200% and then lowered it to 100% (1920x1080) and after that the temp where more normal again.

But now i noticed again the fans were loud and I were just afking in the character screen and the GPU temp were now peaking at 80c, once I press the Enter world button and I get the loading screen the temp more or less insta drop to under 60c and then once im ingame the temp set to around 65 ish but when i log out and and stay in the character screen the temp just peak out at 80c again after a short while.

Anyone having similar “problems”?
And why is the character screen “more demanding” than actually playing the game?! =)

On a side note… I do get around 80c when playing Mafia 3 for ex which I reinstalled yesterday but I think that has more to do with the game itself then my GPU.

Try to set max FPS in the settings to something sensible for your monitor and GPU combination. Character selection screen is not going to be CPU bound to GPU can probably draw it at some high FPS if the limit is unlimited.

wow… thanks man…

I set the FPS to max 120 and holy cow… now the temp is 50.
Thanks for a true and fast reply Mr Grelier =)

Np. Just as further information GPUs can generally run hotter than CPUs without noticeable throttling so while 80C is fairly hot it is not “omg, that’s too hot” level yet. And in anycase GPU will throttle itself automatically if the temperatures rise too high.

ye i know 80 isn’t like u said omg too hot… but I just found it weird to have it peak at 80c while afking in the character screen… which I usually don’t do anyways so it’s np =) but with your help i fixed the problem. =)

On a side note… i fixed the FPS in Mafia 3 as well… and now the temp is stable at 55 ish. =)

What is the refreshrate of your display and does it have gsync/freesync?

It actually isn’t. It’s not demanding at all. This means your GPU (without an FPS limiter) can dish out very, very high FPS. But the higher the FPS, the more work your GPU is doing, which results in it becoming really hot, which in turns means your fans are doing more work ( = more noise).

Ye I understood that after Greliers post. =)
