3rd & 4th Generation Death Knights

I’ve been doing a little reading up on lore to finalise how I’ll rp a Nightborne Death Knight and a specific question came to mind.

As we all know, Arthas raised the 3rd generation of Death Knights as a weapon against the living that later formed the Knights of the Ebon Blade after being freed during the Battle for Light’s Hope Chapel, and years later Bolvar created a 4th Generation in order to protect Azeroth against a future threat.

Functionally the 3rd and 4th Generations are the same; both are dead raised by the Lich King and granted the same powers. But what about psychologically? Does the 4th Generation suffer from the Eternal Hunger like their immediate predecessors do? According to an ingame book, Arthas instilled his Death Knights with a need to cause pain and suffering or else suffer pain themselves. Did Bolvar remove this aspect from his Generation, or is it actually intrinsic to this current type of Death Knight and unable to be altered?

I’m sure we can all see that when the new DK starting experience is in. I mean… what is ingame can’t be it, can it? …it is? Well… I guess the best answer you will get is: Blizzard doesn’t care, make your own headcanon. Your question seems quirte reasonable. If the hunger is artificial and Bolvar is in any way nicer than Arthas, it would make sense not to use the same DK template.

The only problem is that we will most likely get to see quite a lot of Bolvar in Shadowlands, and we’ll learn more about the role and powers of the Lich King and maybe DKs, so… be open for new infos on that.

I’m guessing the latter, after all Bolvar still tells you to “suffer well”
And I don’t know, but if such a core element of deathknight lore were removed, shouldn’t it at least be mentioned?
The new intro really leaves everything to be desired, we can only hope there’s more to come with Shadowlands.
For exampIe, would really like to know how void elf dk’s even work. Do they still hear the whispers?

In the end… it remains “all fun and games”^^

DKs felt special and the original starting zone was well done and was simply epic. Like so many things, Blizzard blew it again by making it available for all.

At the rate they’re going, we will probably see Kul’tiran DHs in the next patch when once again one of the devs or management has taken a smoke too many or couldn’t control the booze intake. sigh

Gnome DH, best DH.

4th generation DKs? More like clown generation made up of pandas and vulperas.

I didn’t said they are better, but compared to the “cute” furries they look solid now.

Yeah… walking cows and gnomes with pink hair look so evil and deathknight like

Well, then forget all the other ARs what ch aren’t Vulpera. Good god

Fun fact on the latter: Pink hair is a Death Knight only option for NEs.

The problem with 3rd & 4th generation dks is more of a “how can we sell more subs / keep people “hooked” longer”.

Most Blizzards’ moves just boil down to this one factor. It should serve as a warning to all new game developers out there, i.e. if you have a good idea / unique product - don’t fall for the promise of fame and fortune made by profitmongers who will ruin all and everyone in the end just to make a fast buck. Stay independent and guard your assets. Blizzard has taken the downward path as regards to quality after shacking up with Activision. So, don’t be surprised if you get presented BS - especially with regard to lore.
