4k Monitor

Do you mean Vsync? Because freesync is something your monitor needs to support.

It’s a 7 year old gaming monitor, not too bad because of the 144hz.
I would recommend you try it out first if it is good enough.
Downside, it has no freesync or gsync support and is a TN panel which means the viewing angles are pretty bad.

Freesync (for AMD graphics cards) & G-sync (for nVidia) are features that allow a monitor to adjust the refresh rate of the image to allow for fluctuations in the amount of frames being fed to the monitor, esp. when they are slow to be sent.

Your RTX 2060 is not the best graphics card to be gaming at 4K, so it shouldn’t be a major consideration.

Things that you should be looking for:

2560x1440 resolution - yes
Refresh rate above 60Hz - if possible
G-sync - ideally; recommended for 60Hz+ refresh rates
IPS or VA panel - ideally
TN panel - avoid, where possible

Also for Nvidia

Nvidia does support freesync, but not the other way around.

The original BenQ monitor I linked does support FreeSync to be fair.

Will my performance in WoW drop significantly if moving from a 1080p monitor to 2 or 4K? Will I not be capped at around 60fps with my CPU/GPU anyway?

Well it depends. The higher the resolution the more demanding it is on the GPU.
For the CPU it does not make any difference.
The CPU is important though if you want to generally run at higher refreshrates than say 60.
The 2700x is good enough, but not the best for WoW.
I would recommend WQHD with 120Hz+.
Setting 7 should be no problem with your CPU/GPU combo.
Of course you will never have stable 100+ FPS in a raid or worldboss fight, not even in a 5man dungeon if you are pulling alot of mobs and aoeing them.
But then again, no CPU can handle that at those FPS all the time.
It is a limitation of the old engine.
That has to be clear when going for a high refresh monitor.
Are you playing other games? If so which? That would also play into making the right decision.
Like say you want to play a modern AAA title which is way more demanding on the GPU than WoW is, then you will not get high refresh rates in WQHD with a 2060.

So a WQHD 140hz vs 4K 60hz, would it just be better overall? Like there’s no advantage to the higher resolution? Not even a clearer image in WoW, even if framerage not as good?

Would be using the monitor for working and movies as well.

I don’t currently play any other games.

The image will be a bit clearer than WQHD of course, but not so much that it is worth the money.
4K gaming is still VERY demanding and expensive.
Also the benefit of 144Hz vs 60Hz is MUCH higher than 2K vs 4K.
And im gonna say it again, if you want to play other games in 4K with a 2060, just forget it.
I wouldn’t even with my 2070 Super.

If you also want the monitor to be good for work then i suggest you go for an IPS panel.

EDIT: forgot to mention that the clarity and sharpness of the image also depends on the PPI of the display (pixels per inch).
For example a 1440P display at 24" will be sharper than a 1440P 32".

And I’m guessing the 144hz just feels a lot smoother when planning the camera and that still frames don’t look different? Annoying that I can’t go in a shop to see with my own eyes right now!

Yes it feels much smoother in motion.

If the game can provide higher framerate than 60Hz. On older zones it’s easy. In current not always.

Not sure if it’s just because my current monitor is a 1080p or not but I’m running over 100fps in new zones on level 10 settings at the moment…

Assuming it’d be much lower on a 1440 or 4K monitor though?

Maybe not much, but yes you will have to lower the settings a bit.

Check your FPS while in the Great Seal in Dazar’alor (the main hub) or while staring at the entrance to it. Or while doing circles around Dalaran Legion. That will be you lowest FPS. 100+ FPS there is very hard to get but if you move to areas in Dazar’alor with less structures you can get higher FPS. The key for high refresh rate panels is to have good image quality when the FPS drops as it will drop - then FreeSync/GSync come in handy, Vsync less but still.

And you have to look at average framerate but also 1% low FPS to see if you aren’t close to stuttering etc.

That’s me tried the BenQ now - looks fantastic for still gameplay but am noticing the screen tearing as I pan the camera. Not sure if it’s something that would bother me or not… I’ve capped FPS at 75 and put graphics to 7 - seems to maintain that no matter where I’m at.

32 in may be a little too large for my study to be honest…

Looking at possible alternatives and wondering if it’s worth splashing the extra cash.

  1. ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ HDR Gaming Monitor – 27 Inch WQHD (2560 x 1440), IPS, 165Hz*, Extreme Low Motion Blur Sync G-SYNC Compatible, Adaptive-Sync, 1ms (MPRT), HDR10

This one seems to have all you’ve mentioned as being great - well over 144hz, IPS etc. Although coming in at £500 it’s not cheap.

  1. Acer Nitro VG271UPbmiipx 27 inch WQHD Gaming Monitor - (IPS Panel, FreeSync, 144Hz, 1ms, HDR 400, ZeroFrame, DP, HDMI, Black)

Alternative that I mentioned earlier also seems to have everything and is only £360, is there something I’m missing? Has FreeSync and is full WQHD at 144hz so seems to have it all.

Seems quite good, but has supposedly noticeable backlight-bleeding (image is not really black where its supposed to be, in a dark room).

Why cap at 75 FPS if the monitor is 60Hz?
Of course you will get tearing then. Try with Vsync + triplebuffer.

Would you say any of the below would be worth the £400+ price tag?

  1. ASUS ROG SWIFT PG278QR, 27 Inch WQHD (2560 x 1440) Gaming Monitor, 1 ms, Up to 165 Hz, DP, HDMI, USB 3.0, G-SYNC

  2. BenQ EX2780Q 27 Inch 2K QHD HDRi 144 Hz Gaming Monitor FreeSync, IPS, USB-C

  3. LG Ultragear 27GL83A-B 27-Inch QHD IPS 1MS Nvidia G-Sync Compatible Gaming Monitor

  4. Acer Predator XB321HKbmiphz 32 Inch UHD Gaming Monitor, Black (IPS Panel, G-Sync, 4ms, DP, HDMI, USB Hub, Height Adjustable Stand)

Capped at 75 as it says it goes to 75hz for some reason even though it’s a 60hz. Have played around in Mechagon and seem to maintain a decent framerate here. Guess it’s just mythic dungeons/raids where I’ll probably notice a significant dip in fps with this monitor…

Not more than in 1080P because it is the CPU limiting there, not the GPU.

Can’t really say from experience, would have to check out reviews too.
But i can tell you that the LG 83A is very good since i have the 850 which is only slightly better.

Framerate has been a lot lower with the 4k monitor than the 1080p, graphics must also come into play?

That’s good re: LG - I think that the ASUS/Acer are similar spec too. May consider one of these as a replacement!
