Beta Client Update - 23 September

A few moments ago, we made a new client build available to Beta testers:
WoW Forever 1.60.1 Build 69977

Exit the Beta, go to your Battle.net App, and update your client to this new build to test fixes for:

  • Fixed some display issues and stability issues on Macs.
  • Controller navigation should now work more properly in the character selection screen if you launch with gamepad active.
  • You can now interact with items that give you quests on gamepad.

This client build also includes other fixes for issues that are not testable in-game.

Our next full weekly update is coming on September 24.

So happy to see the Gamepad fixes! I’m really enjoying the Gamepad experience. If I may take the chance, I’d love to give a little more feedback about Gamepad…

  • The Fishing Bobber can land outside of your interaction range, making it impossible to actually reel in the fish.
  • While on the topic of fishing, I think that having a Fishing Rod equipped should allow you to cast your line simply by pressing the Attack button if you have no enemy targeted.
  • Critters cannot be targeted, so quests that require you to target critters (Sickly Gazelle in The Barrens) can’t be completed with Gamepad
  • It can sometimes be unclear when you are autoattacking a target. I’d like a more distinct visual so I know that I’m autoattacking.
  • I’d like it if my character would automatically turn to face targets that I’m using abilities on, even if only for the one frame required for the attack to go off. KB+M players can strafe away while continuing to shoot a target that they’re kiting, Gamepad should have the same ability
  • Interacting with some UIs (The trade UI, and sending mail) is kind of clunky and difficult on the gamepad. If you use the mouse to put items into a letter, the prompt to send the mail disappears and you have to deselect and reselect the windows.
  • I’d like it if I were more able to use the mouse while using the Gamepad UI. There are times where I find myself wiggling the mouse to get it to show up just to interact with a couple of things.
  • You probably are already aware of this, but it seems like I cannot customise the Gamepad UI in Edit Mode. Even small things, like changing the size of the party frame or moving swing timers, doesn’t save at all. Just thought I’d mention it in case it needed saying!

It cannot be overstated that I really, really love the Gamepad UI so far. It’s really good and clean, and feels great to play with. There’s just a few pain points and some bugs, but overall… excellent work! I’m really enjoying it and have leveled several characters with it exclusively.

Keep up the great work! I can’t wait to try WoW Forever on Steam Deck & Steam Frame!

Unfortunately, the main issue that affects the quality of Mac gameplay was not fixed (having to keep Shadows set to Fair, otherwise the fog disappears and shader issues appear, such as black grass and crushed textures).

Besides this Shadows issue which heavily affects the visuals, I find that setting the Secondary Lighting to Fair makes the Mac client decently stable and playable.

I just did some testing.

  • The game no longer crashes with Secondary Lighting turned above “medium”.
  • Secondary lighting still does not work but leads to noticeable FPS drops. I suggest to leave it off.
  • Secondary lighting above “medium” leads to green and yellow texture tinting.
  • Shadows on “fair” are no longer green. I played for about 20 minutes and the green tint did not came back.
  • Water and plans is still black when shadows are above “fair”.
  • Performance has become noticeable better at places where I had FPS drops, e. g. Skyborn starting zone.

So as of right now the game is at least playable with Shadows on “fair” ans Secondary Lighting on “medium”. So far no green tinting on these settings. Also performance seems slightly better. I tested it on an MacBook Pro M1, 8GB with macOS 27.

Lets hope that the patch on the 24th introduces further fixes. Thanks for keeping is up to date!

Thanks for the fix.

Unfortunately, saving the add-on settings still isn’t working.

When is that expected to be fixed?

Addon settings are being saved, you can easily check this by relogging to any of your alts or simply reloading the UI. As you load different alts/reload UI the addon settings are being loaded so the addon settings are being saved.

The actual problem arises when you exit the game. The next time you launch the game and log any character in-game all your addon settings are not being loaded by the game. This results in all your addons loading with default settings.

My workaround is to simply delete all the addon SavedVariables files before launching the game. Obviously that causes all addons to reset to default settings but I can change the addon settings to what I want and the game will save those settings. Switching between alts/reloading UI will load those addon settings just fine. Unfortunately I have to repeat this process every single time I exit the game, but I’ve only got a few addons installed so it only takes a few minutes to reset them all to what I want.

I’ll certainly be glad to see Blizzard fix this issue, though I suspect it may not be too high on their “To Do” list. It didn’t even get a mention in their “Known Issues” list, although that list was really small compared to all the issues I’ve been seeing!

something has changed for the worse on PC with todays update. im getting a random square of darkness around the char. where only seconday lighting exist. it fades relativly. but still having a square of dark is not good. especially when you can still see the world outside the square as normal

Exact same issue, it occurs on login for me and slowly goes away. Very weird.

by description it sounds kinda the opposite of what they’ve fixed for mac users in this patch (there was a small patch of ground around character that was normal, and all the rest had green tint), looks like the fix was in code that’s common for both platforms and not just mac only, hopefully this will be addressed soon enough too

Hey, am I the only one with water bugs on mac?
The water is just plain black.
