However that model is just not sustainable.
I wonder how far are we from the bubble bursting.
Maybe they will get desperate enough to start selling in the cash shop some previously removed content like mogs and mounts.

It won’t be fun because like any other patch it’s designed around giving you a ton of stuff to grind/collect before you can have the actual fun which is improving your gameplay in the dungeons, raids and/or PvP - whatever you prefer.

And that’s the thing I hate about this game. Sure it’s fine to put in some upgrades here and there but basically rendering your entire work/grind useless at the release of every new patch has killed my desire too keep playing.

These are all things Blizzard does to keep you addicted.

Not far.

The last time the community was this bitter about a patch was 6.1, the infamous Twitter patch.

But unlike that patch there’s so much stuff in this new patch. It’s full of all sorts of content. It’s actually a huge patch with lots of stuff going for it, and yet everywhere I look nobody gives a damn.

So in 6.1 it was a disappointment in the patch; people were excited about WoD and wanted content and didn’t get it. This time people are getting a lot of content but they’re not excited about WoW at all so nobody cares. That’s very different, but the outcome will look similar.

It’s almost as if nobody gives a damn about WoW at all in general any more - even the most fervent fans. And I feel that way myself as well.

We can only hope that 9.1 will revitalise the excitement once it’s actually out, but if not… well…

I spent some time last night doing archeology in Highmountain.

  1. In all the years of digging I never saw so many people doing it (unless it is the Eche’ro week) as if they had enough of SL as I do;

  2. Looking around with the camera close I noticed a lot of great grafic designes - so Blizzard was able to create beauties like the Broken Islands or Zandalar yet in 9.0 they presented us with the ugliest zones one can imagine, blurry, underdeveloped, horrendous to travel around;

  3. This actually hit me a lot - in the year of covid (well, 1.5) instead of giving us something fun, uplifting, interesting, pretty, fascinating, they put us in literal hell. On top of the real life problems we were given Torghast, the Maw, and now Korthia - another wasteland, called a city for no reason whatsoever.

So there was I, digging around, enjoying little flowers of Highmountain, hoping for a better WoW :slight_smile:

No. He should have forseen this comming. Especially in regards of such a topic it was utterly uncalled for. If he wanted to make a funny post then he could have done so in any of the threads that are made for it.

Rather not old bean, much better things to do, like weed my garden etc. More fun to.

With the disaster of domination sockets, the forced torghast runs, the bland raid setting, drab korthia, there is only the dungeon that looks interesting.
Overall dreading the patch, also knowing 9.2 will be last patch. Looking forward to the end of systemlands and 10.0 hopefully less systems and borrowed power. 10.0 is the last chance to get it right.

I have a very similar experience when I recently levelled a CT alt through Legion content, where I was (funnily enough) in Highmountain just soak up views between quests, and I stopped and clocked how I was feeling about it all, and I was like:

“…What is this? Was…legion actually good, but at the time…?”

Was very confusing.

I think all this is also part of a larger trend.
I feel a lot more apathetic about a lot of entertainment products overall. The mainstream ones at least.

Movies, series, games like WoW, pokemon, etc. It feels like I have given up on the ones creating them to understand what made all these a success in the past.
It is almost as if they are no longer made to entertain.

I wonder if more people feel like that. I do not think it is just about getting older cause I know gamers who are much older than me.

Somehow they destroyed… FUN on the way… and it is not just the creators/devs who destroy fun but also the players with their meta trends that turned even classic WoW (for raiders at least) into a world buff stacking treadmill.

Shadowlands is doing its best to keep the people playing not with entertainment but with habits.

I don’t agree that everything mainstream has become garbage by a long shot, however I do agree that there are many, many franchises where the creators have completely forgotten what made those games fun in the first place.

World of Warcraft isn’t the only one at all, but WoW is very special to me.

Here’s a couple of disastrous design changes that, in my opinion, destroyed the franchise:

  1. World of Warcraft, obviously - forgot its own sense of world and community
  2. Pokemon, forgot its central theme of growing up and how nasty the world, and rivals, can truly be - and how to go beyond it and beat the odds
  3. Command and Conquer, forgot base-building… And replaced it with RPG elements that left your team at a serious disadvantage simply by joining if you didn’t farm games. Basically the game was intentionally designed around PvP gear differences and stomping. How the Hell did that game even…
  4. Assassin’s Creed, was turned into a grindy RPG. No idea why.
  5. Crysis; forgot it was supposed to use its awesome tech to enhance gameplay and became another corridor shooter
  6. Bioware… what the Hell happened. Oh well, at least Lionhead has taken care of that problem.
  7. Serious Sam - let’s make the same darn game as many times as there are monsters in the first one
  8. Tetris forgot that the whole purpose was to figure out how fast you could clear lines and turned it into a game about T-spins and S-spins with super easy levels. Nowadays Tetris officially does not support anything above level 15, and they’ve got a randomness system called 7-bag which allows you to cheese the game out of existence - and if anyone dares to make a normal Tetris the holdings company will come after them and kill it! Except Tetris Effect Connected, they’re getting away with it…
  9. Halo - they’re doing good work it seems to me, but it feels like a Microsoft software company product, not a video game product.

But here’s some examples of game series that are stronger than they have ever been:

  1. DOOM. Like, seriously. Wow. It’s a bit unfortunately the level design became so linear, but other than that, jeeze.
  2. Civilization. Some people accuse the 6th installment of being too cartoony, but that series was always cartoony anyway and the depth of the 6th installment is incredible.
  3. Divinity - went from OK to flippin’ amazing
  4. Star Wars; but only the games. Star Wars games have had some seriously impressive entries recently. Jedi: Fallen Order is just ridiculously good.
  5. Baldur’s Gate - different company, still excellent
  6. Far Cry - though it may be different from where it started, I can’t deny that the turn it’s taken has created some very memorable moments and it’s clearly not done out of sheer greed. Those are some very politically risky games to be making
  7. Have you played Half-Life: Alyx? If not, do it. If yes, do it again anyway. Can’t afford a VR headset and a GPU? Sell your kidney. x’D
  8. The Legend of Zelda is still amazing, and Breath of the Wild was very different to other Zelda games, but in many ways shared more in common with where the genre originated, and it was amazing. And if you like N64-Wii era 3D zelda more, well those are coming out too, and they’re also great.
  9. I feel weird in saying this but… Diablo. Now - hear me out: If Diablo Immortal was just a cheap cash-grab it wouldn’t have taken this long to make, and the feedback from testers is very good, and Diablo 4 definitely seems to take great inspiration from the franchise’s roots.

Tons of great games are coming in new franchises, too.

Things come and go. What can I say. And WoW is going. Something has to change. There needs to be some people there who understand how societies work on a much deeper level than the current dev team. These people seem to be able to relay the design principles of the old team, but when push comes to shove, they fail. :confused:

Out of these I at least know that Legend of Zelda somehow manages to still be good overall. Though I wish the next game does not have the weapon decay unless one chooses to. Maybe also for the next game to not have exclusive weapons behind amiibo
I someday need to play baldur’s gate, There was that Dragonspear outrage with the new company though so it soured my interest in the new releases.

These days I always cringe when I head devs talking about their “vision” and how they stick to it. More like a “trip” than a vision imho

I actually think the weapon decay system is one of the things that makes that game so good. It keeps enemies completely consistent and keeps the player completely consistent and simultaneously manages to make sure the player doesn’t outscale the enemy mobs unless he’s taking a stroll through. As soon as you dig a bit further into an area, you “scale down” but in a way that’s perfectly logical.

Furthermore, it keeps you swapping weapons which creates a ton of variety.

The combat is also tremendously clever.

Let me assure you that Baldur’s Gate 3 does not have this problem.

This shouldn’t make you cringe, it should make you excited. Developers coming up with a vision for a game they want to make and implementing it is what we pay them to do.

The only issue is that the vision might not even remotely align with the existing game you love that’s being overwritten, and that’s essentially what has happened with WoW for me.

This is how the game works. I haven’t upgraded my building in my covenant as they are really expensive and I don’t really know what they do. The Queen’s conservatory has something to do with seeds but meh. Where are the quests, introductions, bread crumbs, tutortials explaining what this thing is. The only quest for the sanctum was to set up the mission table. Why didn’t the other buildings have a couple of quests to set them up and give an example of what they do?
Of course I could go read a wowhead guide but until anima farming is tolerable (maybe with flying) I won’t be doing that.
