A couple questions regarding Discord & Guilds

Hallo!

It seems that most guilds have some sort of a discord channel - whilst I do have a discord account, I don’t really use it often at all, so I don’t really know how it works with games.

Is it not a bit inconvenient to have a separate program for a chat channel when you have a chat channel in game? Or is Discord used only for voice chat when it comes to guilds/WoW in general?

I don’t really understand why guilds prefer to use it, so would be pleased to hear your thoughts!

You’re able to connect anytime and everyone pretty much uses it. It’s really convenient for most. Also you don’t need to pick a character to log in on to chat. It’s just you writing from your account

How do you use it while playing? Don’t you have to close WoW to type something?

Hi Daewong  From my experience Discord is mostly used for voice chat and there’s a neat calendar for it that’s great for signing up for rbgs/raids. You can add channels with game info and anything literally. The settings are superior to what WoW offers too. The activity depends on the guild, some have a pretty dead Discord, but still have it for the sake of it.

No, you don’t. You keep it running in the background.

People mostly use it while outside of wow i assume. Also it’s really just an alt-tab away and i don’t find that to be too much effort. Also many of the non-wow people i know in games use discord too so that’s even more convenient.

Also, you can set events better than the calendar will, you can send pictures, gifs, etc, after all guilds are communities and not only means to get to a raid. Depending on your guild, of course. There are a ton of things that wow doesn’t do that this does. I suppose it just depends on what you want out of it. Also discord and such platforms do not invalidate in-game chats with guildies and friends - it’s just another way to connect in and out of game.

Yes, wow companion does exist but it really is inferior in comparison.

It has an overlay so whilst in game messages pop up (for me in the top left corner of the screen but I believe you can set them differently to preference) and you can hotkey to open the overlay to type back.

I don’t use voice chat myself but as I understand it, it works in the background whilst wow is open and you are playing and is much more reliable than the in game voice chat which many people just don’t like.

The discord channels are also handy for arranging events.
