Hello everyone. So for the people affected with the WoWhead ban in certain countries like Turkey, China, Serbia etc. I have a good tip how to still have very easy access to WoWhead database.
Best option is to download Opera GX (or standard Opera) browser. It’s a very good browser for gamers, but the important thing here is that it has a built-in VPN, that is basically toggle on-off. This only affects the browser and not other applications.
To turn on the VPN in Opera GX browser you simply go to Settings > Advanced
Under Advanced settings, you will find settings section for VPN, in which you want to Enable VPN. After you do that, a VPN icon will pop up in the left upper corner next to reload, and any time you want to access Wowhead simply enable the VPN. Make sure to disable it after you’re done with wowhead, since it can affect internet speed in the browser.
When did WoWHead ban said countries and why?
The following countries have been blocked from accessing any of the websites owned and operated by ZAM Network, LLC DBA Fanbyte (the owner of Wowhead. com):
China
Indonesia
Philippines
Thailand
Turkey
Serbia
India
This decision is ultimately due to legal compliance and liability issues with respect to these countries and their laws/regulations. This action was not based on any specific law or regulation in any one or more of the listed countries. Our decision was due to the legal costs involved with reviewing the laws and regulations of the listed countries, in contrast with the amount of visitors/revenue earned from them. As a result of this analysis, we decided not to pursue a legal review and to mitigate our liability in these countries, we opted to block access entirely. This is an indefinite decision. I and the rest of the Wowhead staff genuinely apologize for the inconvenience this will cause you. It was a tough decision but one that we ultimately had to accept.
- Directly from WoWHead’s official discord server. Apparently trouble with laws in said countries
