So, the Cloud Serpents are dragons… I guess?
I am not even sure in that
They were feared as monsters and wild animals untill the Pandaren-Zandalari war
They are clearly inteligent just as any other dragon, capable of speech, have their own names, etc.
But it is not really clear for me, every cloud serpent have the ability like Lorewalker Cho’s cloud serpents Mishi to become a fun sized little companion, or they always are those giant serpentine monters? - eg. in RP would be okay to have a hatchling pet around who then could become a mount if needed or just a talking side NPC?
Are they capable of shapeshifting like Yu’lon the Jade Serpent (who may or may not be their progenitor? ) or that is an August Celestial exclusive thing?
Lastly… witch one is their “ultimate form?” The thundering cloud serpents or the heavenly cloud serpents?
They are considered Lesser Dragonkin in the same way Fairy Dragons are (who can speak).
My pandaren hunter has her mount as a “battle pet”.
But not sure if they can all assume a smaller form.
Yu’lon is a wild god, so she’s effectively to cloud serpents what Malorne is to stags, I guess.
No, not related to the Dragonflights/Aspects at all. The Dragonflights/Aspects evolved from elemental dragons to proto-dragons then eventually the Dragonflights we know today. Cloud serpents have just… existed apparently.
I’m not sure if the general populace of Cloud Serpents can talk like the Dragonflights can (going by the Cloud Serpent Racing).
I suppose Nalak and Tsulong are the only evidence of this, and Nalak is ‘buffed’ by the Thunder King so that might be why he can speak? Not sure on Tsulong though.
I don’t see why not! If Mishi can do it, you could probably make a cool reason why they can switch between sizes. If it’s in game, it’s likely doable in lore (even if Mishi is the only evidence of this.)
Just an August Celestial exclusive thing I imagine. The rest of the celestials shift into a ‘visage’ during the book War Crimes (so I’ve heard).
Probably the Heavenly Cloud Serpent. I would say Thundering Cloud Serpents are related to the Thunder King, though they’re ‘drawn to the storms’ from their infacy going by Warcraft Wiki.
All in all there’s not much lore related to Cloud Serpents and their origins. I’m happy to be corrected on Cloud Serpent lore by someone who knows better than I, but looking at Warcraft Wiki there isn’t many answers to these questions.
While looking conspicuously artificial like the titanforged Mogu…
What did the Titans mean by this…
Hi! Pandaren RPer here!
Yes and no. They are referred to as dragons several times in the lore but canonically they are not of the Aspectral side of things whatsoever.
That is a topic that is hotly debated but they overall consensus is that Mishi is unique in their ability due to being the only one to do so. Mishi’s abilities are also excused due to their existence as a reference to Mushu, from Mulan.
Ancient Cloud Serpents are capable of speech. Nalak and Tsulong are two examples of Thundering and Heavenly cloud serpents doing so, but regular cloud serpents have also done so (in the quest for the onyx cloud serpent, one speaks to the player) but this is not the case for all cloud serpents.
No. That is a Celestial thing due to them being gods.
They have no ‘ultimate form’ as it were, merely variations. Thundering Cloud Serpents and Heavenly cloud serpents can generally be considered more powerful than regular cloud serpents but they are typically do not belong to regular folk.
Now - here is the important caveat. You are going to struggle to justify owning a cloud serpent if you are not a Pandaren or a member of the Order of the Cloud Serpents, which is considered an elite order - it’s a similar outlook as people owning dragon mounts, most Pandaren rpers will look at you a bit funny if you turn up as a regular Pandaren owning a cloud serpent, nevermind as a Vulpera or other non pandaria race.
Additionally, when you choose to RP with a cloud serpent, you need to treat them as though you are RPing two characters at once. Cloud Serpents are an intelligent species even before learning speech, and treating them like a pet will earn you some bad looks from Pandaren RPers especially. Something to keep in mind.
hope this helps!
Well I’m saying they’re no more natural than the quilen.
The origin of Cloud Serpents is left intentionally vague, as is the case with all Pandaren lore kinda! It’s part of the mysticism surrounding the continent and it’s denizens, the only origins we have for such are folktales that may or may not be true. It’s up to you to decide what you think IC, really!
A popular thing amongst Pandaren RPers is to come up with your own folklore based on local tales your character might have heard. (one such I have heard is that Cloud Serpents are the result of a Koi swimming up a waterfall in the vale and being changed by the magical waters that exist there.)
Oh I love this actually. One of the few perks of lore being left intentionally vague.
I’m also a big fan of bringing actual Chinese mythology into Pandaren RP as well. That’s really cool.
Elegon is going to have to answer for these Titan crimes.
Maybe Elagon was their ancestor…
The Cloud Serpents are Aliens!!!
#Tinfoil hats for sale!
The Cloud Serpents are considered a lesser dragonkin, like Fay dragons.
Alas, they cannot all size down to a smaller size without an enchant or spell. Mishi is a special companion, quite old, so a spell has most likely been put on it.
As for Yu’lon, she is a kind of god, like the Wild Gods, and the Loa. She’s a complete different thing than the Cloud Serpents we fly around on.
Thundering is an infusion that the Mogu used and abused. Heavenly is most likely their “ultimate” form due to the fact that Cloud Serpents can reach this state as being ancient without having been tormented by the Mogu or Zandalari.
