A rework suggestion for Icefury

Considering how hated Icefury is by the shaman community (including me), I would like to suggest a rework to it. Here is the general idea:

  • Put Icefury and it’s choice talents on the lower talent rows, changing places with Mountains Will Fall and Echo Chamber.
  • Make Icefury summon an ice elemental for 30 seconds, and while it’s active, Frost Shock’s damage is increased to ~200% and generates 8 maelstrom
  • The choice talents should get the following changes:
    • Flux Melting: While your Icefury elemental is active, casting Lava Burst on targets with Frost Shock slow on them increases it’s damage by 50% and consumes the Frost Shock slow.
    • Electrified Shocks: while your Icefury elemental is active, your Frost Shocks damage up to 2 additional enemies and take 25% more nature damage while Frost Shock is applied to them. Frost Shock’s duration on the target is reset when nature damage is dealt to them.
  • Primal Elementalist synergy: Your Icefury elemental gains the ability “Conjure Hail”. This puts a hail storm below your target (about the same size as earthquake), which deals small, but continous damage to enemies in the area, and applies Frost Shock slow on them every second.

The numbers are place holders mostly. There could be a lot of debate about what is balanced, but I think the general idea is much better and more interesting than Icefury is in it’s current state.

Seems interesting. But how about deleting it as a whole ?

My issue is the following :

So you got 2 ST spells (Lava and Lightning), 2 spenders, 2 AoE (Pwave cleave + Chain lighting) plus having to spread Flame Shock… And dont forget the other 3 modifiers we also have to keep up.

So what would be the goal? You use Icefury and cast Frost Shock instead of what exactly?

While I like the idea of summoning a pet for a while, I dont like the idea of squeezing Frost Shock into an already bloated rotation. And especially not with yet another button : Icefury.

For elemental I have always advocated consistency in the builds.

I personally would delete Icefury and Frost Shock from Elemental as a whole. We already have enough buttons to deal with.

But of course. Its just my opinion. If people really insist on having the “ice” element in elemental rotation, then it should replace something we already have.

So for example :

Left side of the tree would be Nature + Ice damage. And Frost Shock would replace Flame Shock, and Icefury would replace Lava Burst.

And have different mechanics tied to it. For example, Icefury would not have a guaranteed crit. It would instead do big damage, have some sort of proc, and buff cast speed for example.

On the right side of the tree, we got all the fire stuff. And then it would be Nature + Fire damage. And in that side you get the usual Lava Burst + Pwave cleave and so forth. And Lava Burst also gets some proc, does a guaranteed crit, and buffs % damage of your spells.

Middle of the tree is all the nature stuff and spender talents. Lightning damage should be common to all elemental shamans.

A bit or order in the tree. Not everything mushed together with no sense of order/logic behind it.

Things like that.

Deleting at as a whole is an idea, but I would like it more to keep it, because without it, Elemental Blast starts feeling a little weird, not to mention that Elemental Equilibrium needs a new spot, as it would not be able to be triggered outside of Elemental Blast.

The idea to make Ice be more of it’s own identity in the tree is I think better than an elemental. I doubt Blizzard would ever go as far as to change the whole tree to fit that, but it would be really cool to see.

sounds great… but i also think Blizzard made it very clear multiple times that they don’t want people playing ele, so I don’t think they’ll do anything like this. But we can always hope

my question is would it be so hard for Ice strike and Icefury to replace frost shock and then bake in the effects in to one ability. There are only like 2 talents in the whole enhance tree that really buff frost shock (guessing simmilar for ele) and they make it an hard hitting rotation ability and just add on extra buttons without adding much in the way of interactions.

A man can dream

Firstly, these are expensive reworks for business. You are not a popular class like a mage or paladin to ask about this.
Stop dreaming.

How you dare to do the job of the well-paid blizzard’s devs and suggest stuff that are better than the current implements?

I liked ice fury in shadowlands, it was a nice filler spell you could use to plan your movement without losing dps. I think the issue with icefury now is electrified shocks which turns it into a maintenance buff that you have to keep up at all times. Removing electrified shocks would solve the issue since then if you dislike the spell you can choose to not talent it without losing a lot of damage.

I don’t know too much about Enhancement, but for Ele, there is Icefury itself that buffs the next 4 frost shocks, and a choice talent below it, giving it either a maintenance buff for nature damage or bonus damage to Lava Burst after a Frost Shock cast.

While thinking about a rework for Enhance, I think removing Frost Shock entirely and just giving these abilities the slow effect of Frost Shock would simplify things, as nobody likes the fact that their rotation must include this small instant casting spell. So in the case of the Elemental’s Icefury elemental, the elemental itself would just cast frost shock on targets as it’s main damaging ability.

I do propose two rework ideas for Enhance.

  1. Frost Shock gone:
  • Ice Strike becomes a simple weapon enhancement for the off-hand. Essentially giving a 50% chance to deal additional frost damage and slow the target.
  • Hailstorm becomes a talent that buffs Doom Winds, by giving you a hailstorm circle that damages enemies around you and slows them.
  • Swirling Maelstrom grants a stack of maelstrom weapon for every 4 seconds that Hailstorm is active or for every 3rd Ice Strike that triggers.
  1. With Frost Shock:
  • Ice Strike does what it does, but instead of empowering one of your Frost Shock, it empowers you with frost energy for the next 10 seconds, during which your Frost Shocks deals increased damage, are not on GCD and cause your target to emit a hailstorm that damages enemies around the target. This hailstorm stacks if the target is hit with multiple Frost Shocks, up to 3 times. The CD on this would be around 1.5 - 2 min.
  • Hailstorm is removed, and implemented into Ice Strike.
  • Swirling Maelstrom would give maelstrom weapon for every 2nd cast of Frost Shock during Ice Strike.

I actually like the way Icefury works personally I just think it should be made instant cast, tho there is something to be said for baiting kicks on it which the only locks you out of frost allowing you to heal or hex or lava burst or whatever but still its clunky as hell and since you arent ever hard casting aside from occasional heal and hex the melees will always kick it since they have nothing else to kick… Either make it instant cast or make it not a spell that requires a target and just a casted buff on yourself you can do at the start and squeeze in while behind a pillar occasionally.

And while I do think the icefury elemental sounds awesome, and its the only elemental we dont have still… It does make primal elementalist talent EVEN MORE of an auto pick. Honestly liquid magma totem should 100% just be made a base ability but only spread flameshocks without the extra aoe damage and be on a 30 sec CD. It would make it great for mythic pulls as well as to quickly get flameshocks out on melee cleaves and pets when youve been in CC or theyve been dispelled or in RBGs etc.

I would also love if they played into the elementals more for enhancement as well, give them a similar talent to Primal elementalist except instead of summoning a pet, they gain the abilities themselves based on which one they have active, maybe like a stance system to swap between them with CD between being able to switch.
Earth ele - extra max hp, stun ability (enhance has needed an on demand instant stun for so damn long its not even funny) and maybe like 10% damage reduction.
Fire ele - Empowers flameshock and gives the meteor ability
Storm ele - Not sure maybe just attack speed and higher windfury proc chance/damage?
Ice ele - Empowers frost shock, extra damage and put a 70% slow on enemy thats not a magic effect that can be dispelled I dunno?

Delete ICeFury its such a weak looking skill
