[A-RP] The Circle of Ash 🐍

We’re resting at the Grove of the Ancients, using old Darkshore for the time being. The Circle Leader now has the difficult task of looking for a ship to take them to Stormwind! As such, we’ll be in Darkshore for a few days.

Journal Entry 45 - Idaes Nighthaze

Westfall is fallow and desolate, often hot and often uncomfortable. Its denizens seem to struggle in every corner - trying to survive amidst a land and a kingdom that would rather them dead.

The land’s history is steeped in political strife - an issue that pervades the very earth. Old stover coats every inch of soil not covered with dead yellow grasses and grains - the only bare ground visible is the eroded dirt marked out as farmland, where nothing catches and nothing grows.

The farmers to the north work daily to fight against their barren locale. They toil from dawn until dusk, woken by carrion birds and sent to sleep with scarce servings of soup made using their last harvest’s potatoes and legumes. Much of the work seems to be related to shifting soil and adding fertiliser - as much of it as they can find. Their weariness can be seen even from afar in their slouched postures and uneven gait.

The children that seek haven in the primary farmhouse near camp only occasionally leave base - and when they do, it is usually using the back door or a pried open window. The older teenagers scamper off come moon rise and return with food - almost definitely stolen. Faces can sometimes be seen in the dirty windows, looking outwards onto the barren field - and towards the Circle of Ash.

Guards keep a careful, cruel watch above the shining white walls of Sentinel Hill - and more still stand at the settlement’s entrance. The poor, homeless and desperate are turned away in droves by men and women with gilded armour, hands on their hilts. A large collection of them has settled for living just outside of the base, relying on the charity of a few individuals that live within.

It could be worthwhile getting to know the destitute - they are likely to know the land much better than most, forced to shelter in its wilds. It is hard not to wonder what they have seen and heard.

Very cool idea! I’ve always felt drawn to more forbidden druidic arts and concepts, such as druids of the flame or druids of the pack, love it

The Circle of Ash has recently acquired a grimoire on blood magic! Here it is for anyone interested and for those of our members who prefer the forums:

‘The Art of Blood’ - Authored by Sthaeril Silvetille

Chapter 1: Life - The Fundamentals of Blood Magic

“All that breathes bleeds. To move blood is to move life.”
This chapter introduces the aspiring blood mage to the muddy origins of blood magic - a darker form of life magic. It speaks in detail of the life within blood, and how blood is tied to its owner’s spirit. The reader is encouraged to begin by collecting some of their own blood in a small vial and examining it as a substance; its colour, its magical aura, and its movement.

Chapter 2: Ebb and Flow - Moving Blood

“Blood is liquid. To move it, you must be liquid too.”
This chapter guides the blood mage through learning to move blood. Following the previous chapter, once you are familiar with your own blood, you can begin to focus on its properties. The reader is advised to sit calmly with the vial and to envisage how blood moves within it and within themself. They are told that they must open themselves to the ebb and flow of a liquid - sitting near water may help. Making this initial connection is difficult, and not all will succeed. Once the connection is made, however, they can begin to use the blood’s ebb and flow to their advantage to move it first within the vial and next outside of the vial.

Chapter 3: Shape - Controlling Blood

“All liquid has a master - be it a heart, a moon, or force.”
Once the blood mage has become established with the ebb and flow of blood, they can now learn to shape it. First, the blood mage should move their blood out of the vial and try to form it into a two-dimensional, hollow circle. From here, they should begin to try to stretch the blood into a three-dimensional sphere. The reader is warned that they are likely to fail spectacularly the first few times, and that if the blood is dropped, they should try instead to continue practicing movement on the spilt blood by lifting it up, as opposed to drawing more blood from themselves. While they have spent the last chapter familiarising themselves with their blood and equalising themselves with it, this chapter encourages the mage to take control, citing that liquid is rarely used to moving on its own. Visualising one’s will and exerting it is helpful here - the greater the visualisation and application of one’s own spirit, the greater the control.

Chapter 4: Will - Controlling the Blood of Others

“To control the blood of another living being is to exert your will and spirit over life.”
After becoming proficient at moving their own blood, the blood mage can next focus on moving the blood of others. They should first begin with the blood of dead creatures - preferably fresh, so that the blood is still thin - though the blood mage could try to thin coagulated blood themselves if they are up for a test of skill in shaping. Dead creatures have less resistance to your efforts, as the heart does not beat - likewise, free flowing blood from a wound is separate enough from the living body that it is easier to control - it has no master, besides the pull of gravity and its natural ebb and flow. Once familiar with moving and shaping the blood of other dead beings, they can begin to practice with living beings - first starting with open wounds and then graduating to the blood within a living body. The blood mage is warned that exerting the will over a living creature is a very different feeling, and that it will take some time for them to be able to do this proficiently - especially as all blood is different. In this case, it is a matter of practice and a test of one’s will. The book’s author suggests practicing this while also familiarising themselves with Chapter 5.

Chapter 5: Heart - All Blood is Different

“All blood is connected to the heart it beats through.”
As stated in Chapter 1, blood is life, and it is tied to its owner’s spirit. The blood of a being often takes on certain unique properties and characteristics accordingly, imbued with its owner’s particular strength, will, speed, resilience - and much more. Whilst practicing controlling the blood of others, the blood mage is encouraged to take some samples and examine them, familiarising themselves with their blood in the same way that they did their own in Chapter 1. They may be amazed to see how different blood can be depending on species and individual - and also fascinated by patterns of similarity. Blood mages often use a variety of different blood to perform complex spells and rituals - from scrying and enhancement to resurrection.

Chapter 6: Advanced Lessons - Things to Learn and Try

This chapter details a variety of spells and manipulations for a blood mage to practice once they have become intimate with the previous chapters. This includes:

  1. A ritual for scrying, involving the blood of a creature with extensive sight and the blood of a creature with magical properties.

  2. Spellwork for a tincture enhancing speed, using the blood of a swift, agile creature, a pair of strong lungs, and a collection of oesophageal tissues. They recommend also collecting the swift creature’s feet or weaponry.

  3. Spellwork for a tincture enhancing clarity and focus, using blood from creatures with particular intelligence and a collection of oesophageal tissues. They recommend also collecting the intelligent creature’s brains.

  4. Details on how to use blood to heal oneself via the manipulation of the life present within blood.

  5. Forming advanced shapes with blood, including shards, spears, and protective barriers.

The author also encourages the blood mage to experiment and try new things themselves, or seek out ‘The Art of Blood II’. They close the book with a paragraph about how the limits of blood magic have yet to be defined.

Journal Entry 50 - Idaes Nighthaze

The worgen woman that tends the wagon at Raven Hill has been parked there for some time. She cooks food for the derelict settlement’s residents morning and night, with leftovers from either meal available between - as well as a few other snacks that keep well, including: biscuits, jam, cheeses, oats, and crackers.

Though she asks a silver per bowl, she can often be seen accepting traded words instead of coin - pushing food over after a five minute conversation. She is also happy to serve and trade with any passers-by, no matter how dubious or clandestine they might seem.

Her wagon is rarely left untended and she even makes her bed in it. Whenever she does leave, it is either securely locked or watched by someone else. Otherwise, she can be seen cooking food just outside of it, or leaning on its shelf inside of it, staring outwards over Raven Hill with her chin in her hand.

Today the Circle investigated a curious tunnel the Nightbane worgen dug beneath the great tree of Duskwood, motivated by a void-casting pack leader. Confronted with Fandral’s work from so many years ago, the Circle now seeks to capture the worgen leader, investigate his plans, motivations and origins. However, differences about morals already caused some conflict within the Circle’s ranks.

A little something I wrote as a lead-up to Lryen’s more recent research regarding redemption and stilling the hunger of death knights. While these are her notes from far in the past, the upcoming ones will be more recent. Also we’re in Raven Hill, Duskwood so you should come by :ghost:

Topic 1: To Suffer Well

The Lich King is dead. The Ashen Verdict obsolete. The paladins and warriors return to the warmth of their homes and the embrace of their loved ones, while we are left rotting within Acherus’ cold walls and the repulsive presence of the miscreants we call our brethren.

While most here tasted sweet vengeance, I did not. We occupy ourselves with the destruction of stray Scourge, but already purposelessness weighs heavy, its cacophony ever present like the shades haunting our every step. I wonder if it is worse for them? To have experienced the ecstasy of claiming such beautiful revenge, yet knowing his torture will continue forevermore with no path ahead to follow.

‘We do what the living cannot’, they say as they gorge upon the agony of yet another “deserving” victim. Perhaps a scarlet, perhaps a necromancer or a stray fool that happens to ignite old hatreds. I am not exempt of this sin, but there are those among us who I know will lead us further down this darker path and into a lightless pit where there is no salvation nor hope for it. We are rabid dogs without leashes now.

Out of all my brethren, I despise the disciples of the Unholy the most. So far gone are their minds that they perpetuate the injustice thrust upon us. Worse, they carry themselves like a caricature of Him, using these twisted wretches as servants for the most mundane of tasks, tormenting them at their whim or sealing their destruction with a flick of their wrist. In the meantime, the souls of their victims are left tainted and as doomed as those of their master now that they partook in their sins.

The disciples of blood, misguided, hedonistic and boundless, are next in line. Most embrace the Hunger freely, the nature of their vampiric magic only amplifying the darker cravings we hold. No amount of carnage is enough to still their insatiable urges and soon all dams will break. They do not see that they are yet slaves.

Today I will depart into the frozen wastes before the last of myself is scattered within the grime and blood of the Ebon Hold. I deem my brothers and sisters lost from here on.

Topic 2: Icebound Fortitude

As I wander these desolate lands on my lonesome, filling my empty heart with the blood of the cursed, I come to realise more and more that there are only few paths of dignity left for those such as myself. Every knight with sense will see the eternal hunger we suffer not only as a curse, but also a clever tool of oppression. It is one that continues to exert its influence even should He lose direct control. Forever will it keep us as monsters, slaving away for eternity to sate an urge that can never be sated, visible for all to see and placing us clearly even lower than the Banshee Queen’s pets, and they would be right to assume so.

To be truly free and able to seek some form of salvation for our souls, the hunger must be overcome. However, that cannot mean abstaining from violence and our powers completely. No, that would be a cowardly, even irresponsible approach, for in our curse we were also blessed with terrible power. Power the enemies of our respective people and even this world thoroughly fear. I intend to bring them to justice, but it must be controlled, dispassionate, efficient.

The icy winds of Northrend are the best teacher and as I suspected, following the school of Frost makes for the first and most meaningful step to rid us of our shackles. Contrary to those of the school of Blood, our strikes are deadly, precise and efficient, forcing us to stay temptations and not encourage unnecessary, excessive blood baths that only amplify our urges. Blood and flesh freezes, forming another barrier to gorging. The power of frost, once unleashed and surging through our body, rivals even the ecstasy of sating our hunger. It is a dark trade I am willing to make. Even the most destructive of spellworks can be contained through discipline and willpower, leaving only a temporary mark on the surrounding area as well. One must only compare it to the pestilence and corruption the ‘masters’ of the Unholy unleash. It lingers, it spreads, and contrary to what they claim, they have little control. They are slaves to their whims and their sins are unforgivable. They are a stain on this world.

Naturally, the relentless power of Frost needs to be substituted with our more sophisticated, surgical techniques, which once again, minimise the risk of falling prey to our urges. Anti-magical spellwork, dark wards and the clever manipulation of matter are all tools that must be studied and mastered to the highest level if we wish to use our state for a just cause without ending up as nothing more than slaves, desperate to avoid pain and chase pleasure.

While this doesn’t free us of our burden, it will prevent the frenzy and unbearable torment of the knight. We balance on a rope and below is the abyss.

Journal Entry 57 - Idaes Nighthaze

Wrapped in brown cloth, the worgen ‘Cloakhide’ rattles within his cage, clawed hands gripping the bars. He stares outwards with two small, beady purple eyes - sparkling in the dark like amethysts. He does not speak to the researchers - presumably by choice - and watches all around him with disdain.

As the days go on, his eyes appear to dull in shine, and his ears gradually lower. He watches his staff keenly whenever it is shown to him, and occasionally shakes and quivers. His keepers take notes every few hours. He is not eating well, and seems to take on a learned helplessness. The curative should be administered soon for ethical reasons alone.

More attempts will be made to get the worgen to talk before he is carried into the guillotine for testing. Moonleaf will be mixed in with food, and the druids make prayers and blessings, hoping to push against his dark, void-addled mind. Results are eagerly awaited - theories and plans brew.

:scroll: A New Manifesto - The Axiom of Change :scroll:

One of the most important rules of the natural world is the axiom of change. Look now to the world around you and observe. The sky changes gradient and its cloud-cover shifts and intermingles. The water of the river passes and does not stay. The fire burns, always consuming and always liberating smoke - either moving upwards or moving downwards depending on its available fuel. In short, everything flows - all things are passing, and nothing abides.

Why, then, do the Kaldorei people work against this natural law? Contrary to change, we do not flow - and we always abide by the false rules, systems and expectations put in place by our elder others. How can we uphold our world if we work against its flux? We have seen our people suffer and writhe within its ancient constraints - held down by old knowledge and old warfare while other more violent, more dangerous and cruel races advance, twisting our stillness against us.

Why has the High Priestess only now abandoned these old methodologies? Why are so many still resistant against the change she now brings in? Only recently have we reconsidered the exile of mages - many of which had learnt from their mistakes long, long ago - many of which never stood with Dath’remar and the exiled. Even after the sacrifice of many for their people in the War of the Thorns, they are still scorned! Despite victory and vengeance, many of our people are still shackled by false ideas of ‘what is’, as opposed to the true constant of change - ‘what is becoming’.

It is time for the kaldorei people to become and join the world’s natural flow. Walk through the river, and seek out the Circle of Ash if freedom of practice and liberation from the ‘expected’ is what you seek.

This can currently be found plastered around Duskwood in Darnassian! We hope to lure some non-druid kaldorei outcasts with this one… though we are open to all :eye:

The Circle has received some research on a curious new flower they’ve found. Here it is for anyone interested and for those of our members who prefer the forums. Feel free to integrate it into RP - or not - should you be passing Duskwood. We are also now camped in Stranglethorn Vale!

‘The Blood Bloom’ - Authored by Sister Wren Willow

The Blood Bloom is a bright red bloom with a red stalk. It forms a small bud before opening into a flower, of which is made of petals that form a spiral pattern. It is somewhat rose-like, but the spiral is much more clearly defined - the pattern almost seeming unnatural. It smells metallic. When pollen is present, it is bright red.

It appears a peculiar flower, perhaps resulting from the recently thinned veil between the Here and There. Its seeds begin to germinate upon touching blood - until then, they remain in a dormant state. The flower is capable of both asexual (apomixis) and sexual reproduction.

It grows quite quickly and also dies quite quickly after reproduction - facilitating a swift lifespan. Seeds are easily carried by both water and wind, meaning a rainy, stormy climate is particularly advantageous to them, perhaps explaining their presence in Duskwood, alongside its abundance of strife (large presence of bloodshed).

The Blood Bloom draws in mostly the blood it touches, isolating it from the rest of the soil. It seems to have somewhat of a magical touch, which is not uncommon in herbology. I can sustain it with life magic, but the flower does not reproduce without the presence of blood - presumably due to some specifics of the nature of blood itself (inherent magic, life-giving properties, link to the Other Side).

I hypothesise that it could be useful in contacting spirits of the deceased, given that it preserves the blood taken in until the flower itself has used it all and dies after flowering. I have also created several potent healing potions with the flower. More research will be conducted.

The result of our stealthy expedition into Zul’Gurub. This is Ysselar’s first step towards developing his bond to Hethiss AND the beginnings of his research towards a (non-corrupted) Fang form :snake: More to come in the future, I am sure. Also, we are currently in Stranglethorn, come by… the pamphlets lead the way.

The Shrine of Hethiss

The City

While the Gurubashi erect statues of many wild gods, none of them appear as central as the serpent god. The erected stone cobras stand as prideful and ruthless guardians, their upper bodies towering to the left and right as the first line of defense of Zul’Gurub Later, more adorn the slim path of the troll city, lengthy bodies writhing left and right with each serpent’s head held high, their emerald gazes ever watchful.

Even the city itself seems constructed in the image of a coiled, resting snake. Its roads and bridges split off from the serpentine main path, leading to temples of other gods on the edges. While they are no doubt respected, there must be a meaning behind the structure: To reach these temples, one will have to directly pass by the shrine of the cobra god Hethiss and withstand the scrutinising gaze of his children and those he grants his protection, both large and small.

Ritual Site

While the shrine itself is walled off, the entrance to it, a giant arcway with engravings, towers right by the main road with two stone snakes to the left and right of it. While the most sacred site is located within, Hethiss’ influence extends far beyond these walls, both through its guardians slithering above and below, and through his magic. The unworthy would be quickly disposed of by the former, some of the snakes roughly the size of an average kaldorei, and that is if one only counts their upright upper body.

The ritual area within the walls itself is roughly oval with images depicting a variety of actions by both snakes and Hethiss’ followers. Often basins worked into the wall accompany these depictions.

Two statues of regular, non-hooded snakes adorn the stairs to the main site, which is elevated from the rest. On the second level, two cobra statues stand to the left and right of the main altar: a cobra, the patterns of its hood adorned with a plentiful of emerald gems, a mass of skulls (of a variety of races) and a small basin below.

Prideful and mighty as they are, I suspect the cobra either deems itself above the other serpents, even as a ruler. However, they do not reject the others, for they too are granted sanctuary here.

Depicted Rites

Parts of the main altar, the emerald cobra Hethiss himself, shows a troll pouring liquid into a basin, the liquid subsequently turning into several snakes. The stone within the basin of the altar is corroded, suggesting at least part of the liquid might be venom.

Other images on the walls around the area show crying serpents, a curious depiction, considering they are unable to do so. However, they can inject venom or even spit it when angered or threatened. The equivalent of tears, perhaps. I suspect this to be metaphorical, which ties into the rite depicted on the main altar. Their tears are to be harvested.

The third notable image shows trolls drinking a liquid, witnessed by the surrounding snakes. This could be an induction or trial to determine the worthiness of the follower in the eyes of Hethiss and his children.

The Cobra’s Call & the Reconstruction of Events

I was surprised to have received Hethiss’ call. As a kaldorei, I am the mortal enemy of his followers, after all. I suspect my lifelong connection to snakes and my companion Nythe may have played a role in his acceptance of me. In any case, my other companions noted no such thing, and I only did after communion with Nythe and her approach to the altar.

The call itself came in the form of a subtle whisper, gentle hisses, unintelligible yet easy to understand within my soul. The pull of it was strong, almost possessive. It implored Nythe, and by extension me, to join them by the shrine. Join Hethiss, the father. Though not forced, it felt hard to resist or disobey. The cunning and sinister nature of the creature behind it felt almost tangible. I would most compare it to the whispers of the Void, however less oppressive and seductive, but equally calculating and cold. There were no sweet promises here. Whatever it, or Hethiss, wished to achieve was meant to happen voluntarily.

Passing the shrine’s guardians proved not to be a hurdle, they made way for myself and Nythe, both of us drawn to the main altar. The altar itself and the statues were touched by nature’s magic not dissimilar to our own shrines. Eager to honor the god, I was quick to spill the Nythe’s collected venom into the basin, the felt presence of Hethiss making the sacrifice of my own blood a logical second step. After a collective hiss of the surrounding snakes, and a brief prayer of my own, the two liquids within the basin were quick to meld into one, resulting in a green, almost emerald substance. Once again, I was urged to collect it, though this is where my experimentation stopped. Though I did consider taking the third step of drinking it, I ultimately did not. It is important to note, however, that I did sense a lingering disappointment by the presence in me, though it did not urge me in either direction initially. This underpins my suspicion that, while cunning and sinister as snakes are, any bond is not meant to be formed via deception, but voluntarily. I suspect drinking what was gifted to me would be the last step to form a bond to this wild god. Judging by Hethiss’ character, breaking such a commitment would be less pleasant than doing so with one of the gods of Kalimdor.

Hethiss, the Father

Ability

Encounters of the human expeditions with the followers of Hethiss, suggest that he is not only a simple cobra god, but must be closely related to the spitting cobras specifically. According to them, some of his followers were able to, at least temporarily, shapeshift into large versions of such, spitting projectiles of venom for the eyes of their foe which not only would have left them permanently blinded, considering the cytotoxic nature of the venom, but also with acidic burns. If the venom of the smaller specimen is able to cause blisters on skin, then I would be surprised to not find the same here but it in a much more potent form. Likewise, encounters with their more experienced priests, report not only physical assaults, but possibly also mental ones, victims of the venomous barrage supposedly haunted by the hissing of snakes not dissimilar to what I myself experienced when called to his shrine.

Character

Like most cobras, I suspect Hethiss to be a most prideful spirit, just like his brothers and sisters. Fittingly, they are after all, one of the few serpents that can ‘stand’ almost upright with one-third of their body held high if they wish to. As mentioned before, this is also reflected within his shrine, with the other serpent statues only standing on the lower level, below the cobras. I would imagine he enjoys flattery and gifts more so than other gods. Only the best is good enough, which would explain the plentiful of humanoid sacrifices adorning the shrine itself and his liking for blood.

More so than others within the family of serpents, I deem cobras more aggressive and skittish. Their assaults are savage and ruthless, and while their venom may not be as potent, the amount they inject far surpasses most other venomous snakes, not to mention their savage, multiple strikes. Their behaviour reflects what I felt in the presence of Hethiss, a restlessness in a sense, bloodthirst and some sadistic joy, perhaps also reflected in the cruel nature of his venom, or rather, that of his followers. I expect a form blessed by him to be extremely difficult to control, at least for an extended period of time. Even the mere connection to him made these impulses harder to control within myself, despite my training as an Ashen.

While no doubt cunning and conniving, befitting the opportunistic cobra, I do not believe he would deceive his followers or those he deems no threat. Worship for him should be genuine, not borne out of fear but adoration and conviction. That being said, his enemies should be wary of his schemes, and I believe a successful follower of Hethiss will need to show intellect and guile to earn his respect and guidance.

Thoughts: Worship & the Kaldorei (incomplete)

Not unlike the cobra, we kaldorei stalk our enemy silently and long before our prey is aware of us, and even if close, we wait for the perfect opportunity, moving and acting as one. Once the time is ripe, we strike swiftly, often several times, with retreat as a key strategy. The enemy is whittled down instead of risking injury or our own, not unlike the cobra which strikes and retracts several times from a safe distance, each dose of venom further sealing the enemy’s fate. The snake sheds her skin, renewing herself, not unlike Mother Moon’s cycles. Despite these similarities, the serpent is all but neglected within our society and few ever have the opportunity to truly appreciate and learn from these creatures, and by extension these gods.

Fortunately, the return of old Night Warrior rituals offers an opportunity to bring the serpent’s teachings to our people without cursing the necessary offerings and rites as savage and barbaric. Nonetheless, I believe reintroducing these practices will be the most difficult barrier to cross should we succeed in forming a bond with these gods. For this reason, I hope to see how far I can push Hethiss’ boundaries for other offerings. They would have to be precious and valuable indeed if they do not involve blood.

His ruthlessness and guile is a necessary path for the kaldorei to take, not only to claim vengeance, but to embrace all aspects of nature and reestablish our people as uncompromising protectors of this world.
