We got cross-server play, cross-faction play.
We also get a lot of imbalance between servers, with very populated ones and deserted others.
Isn’t it time to merge all these servers together into a single megaserver and turn all the current servers into channels ?
Allowing everyone from any server/channel to play any content with anyone else from any other server/channel ?
Maybe even allowing anyone to freely and seamlessly move from channel to channel ?
Do you know this is Shadowlands aka Retail? Only thing you ask is cross realm guilds rest exist, and classic server queue has nothing to do with Shadowlands.
You’re really sure the load of 4-5 full servers can’t be balanced across the dozens of servers we have ? That’s a lot of defeatism here.
My point is we have sharding. But it’s very close to a single megaserver with channels, in fact. The only differences are the load balancing and some arbitrary restrictions, which both are bad. So why not take away these bad restrictions and solve load balancing at the same time ?
Make server choice about location and lowest latency. Make guilds, groups and the AH server-agnostic.
There are enough servers for everyone playing. The problem is that people flock to the fullest servers precisely because of how stuff like guilds and the AH work.
One server, many channels. That would actually solve that problem aswell.
If you experienced lag (because some raid which you are not part of are taking down a world boss), you’d just hop into another channel, where the raid boss is not under attack.
