whenever i am in combat some of my abilities just seem to “happen” without me pressing the buttons or in the case of ground targeted AOEs (deep breath, death and decay, heroic leap, rain of fire etc) just happening wherever my cursor happens to be
and i can hear the click sound over and over without my hands on any of the controls
does anyone know how to actually FIX this i dont use any addons, and i have seen reports of this exact bug going back as far as 2019 but none of the forum posts actually confirm the poster was able to fix it
so far the methods i have tried to stop this happening are:
full uninstall and reinstall of wow
full UI reset as outlined here: https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/7549
tried a different (brand new) keyboard and mouse
but these have all failed to fix it
and as anoying as this is in 99% of situations it is making my rogue unplayable because the game just burns all my energy on its own
if anyone knows what causes this and how to fix it please let me know
Are you using any macros for targeting or casting?
no none i thought that might have been causing it so i deleted all my macros that did that during shadowlands and this problem has never been fixed but as i said in the original post ive seen reports of this going back as far as 2019
What keyboard or mouse did you try? Was it the same type of keyboard or mouse? If it was, it could very well be a software malfunction. I know someone that had macros inadvertently recorded in the software without their knowledge and the keyboard was triggering the recorded macros at random, due to a software bug. He thought someone had taken control of his computer because it would start typing randomly and use abilities etc but it was the software for the keyboard malfunctioning.
nope swapped from a razer blackwidow to a corsair k95 so totally different software

The game shouldn’t have the ability to launch abilities by itself (outside of macros, which require a manual input).
- Please do check your macros, or make sure that you’re not using any
- Do make sure that you haven’t reactivated addons, or that you’re not currently using third party addon clients when doing a full UI reset
- If you have already swapped your keyboard and mouse, do try to close all background applications:
i have already done ALL of those steps and to no avail you say it SHOULDNT be doing this and yet it is and as i have pointed out this goes back as far if not further than 2019 as you can see in this post about this exact same bug: https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow/t/abilities-go-off-by-themselves/188180/11
and it wasnt resolved then either. i was speaking with a guildie and they also have the same bug and they can also hear the game “clicking” so im not alone in this
It’s not because you found a post from 2019 that this the same issue, or that this is an issue with the game. If it had been, there would most likely be a lot more posts than these (and yours, now).
Right now, it’s most likely an issue with:
- Your interface
- Your hardware
- Your software
If you’re absolutely sure that you’ve done everything, you can always create a ticket in game, and we can try to log in on your Rogue to see if it happens for us as well. Please do try to provide as much details as possible (when and which the abilities are being used) so that we can try to replicate it.
Feel free to provide a short video as well (you can find many free programs for streaming or video capture, and can post it on Youtube for example).
I would say there is some macro software active if your /macro section is empty.
Just so you know, having external macro software active can be counted as automation which is kin to botting.
Shut down everything next to the clock, including keyboard/mouse software then try again.
could you please explain how exactly to create a ticket in game? because when i click contact support it takes me out to my browser, the automated system asks me to describe the issue and when it fails to find any relevant information i click i still need help which asks me to categorise the issue (and the limited options really dont seem a fitting category for this) and then that takes me back to the same automated form from step 1 and it just loops like that over and over
I just logged your Rogue in-game, and whacked a Training Dummy for a few minutes using all of his abilities, with the sound at full volume.
I didn’t hear any clicking sound, and none of his abilities went off on its own, as expected. His Energy bar only consumed the energy that I used, when using his abilities manually.
If this issue does persist for you, and if you absolutely followed all of my advices here, please do feel free to post a video of this happening (here, or create a ticket). If you create a ticket, please do include an MSinfo file.

thanks for testing but i have tried that exact test myself and noted the problem doesnt occur when hitting training dummy it only happens in actual combat (the more chaotic the better like the superbloom or a world boss) and the better test would have been a character with ground targeted AOE like death and decay or rain of fire which i have bound to ctrl+(numerical key)
also further information: this only happened on my rogue in assassination spec not sub which i currently have set
I got exactly the same problem on my assasination rogue and i neither use macros nor did i use addons.

Are you sure it’s not a class ability?
What skill is it happening with?
well on my rogue i hear the clicking when i enter stealth but when im in actual combat and my ambush proc happens the game just continues to spam ambush until i have no energy
as for other classes its totally random when i hear the clicking noise but it does automaticly use the ground targeted AOEs like volley on my hunter very occasionally it will work as intended but given the frequency of this bug or whatever it is it actually comes as a novelty when it actually works
