I previously posted this in [Dungeons, Raids and Scenarios], but it might be more appropriate here.
I have fibromyalgia (pain everywhere, fatigue, brain fog) and weakauras have helped me be able to finally relax and enjoy the game.
The pain I get from repetitive movement is unbearable, so I use a mouse with buttons all over it to reduce that issue; I placed each weakaura in the same spot it occupies on my mouse (top right, top left, etc). Freedom of placement for each individual action that I need to press is essential.
I have very bad brain fog, that means that I have trouble distinguishing things visually, and quickly. It’s a bit soupy and confusing. To solve this, I created my own graphics for weakauras, with specific shapes and colours, so that I can react to them through mechanical memory. They are very visually distinct, and I am so familiar with them that I know immediately if its shape indicates and instant spell, and the colour indicates things like a summon or a big cooldown.
The colours of the in game’s spell icons usually follow the theme of the spec, making them look very similar; they also have the same square shape. In a visually confusing environment, they also have too much detail and end up being part of the noise.
Brain fog also means that I can’t make constant fast decisions to decide what to press, analysing things like what spell I have previously used and their secondary effects like extra resources, how much of a resource I had before that, the change in priorities due to random procs, what is appropriate for what is happening around me, etc.
I can’t just get good, it’s a disability and I never asked for it.
I could perhaps bind the 1 button rotation to every button on my mouse to avoid repetitive movement, if the game allows that, but the fact that it does not require any thinking at all makes it too simple: the fatigue takes over, and I fall asleep while playing.
So taking all of the above into consideration, I am left with the option to try to do a simple rotation, and become an absolute dead weight in group content.
I refuse to play with others knowing that I am a burden.
I hope this perspective can help someone working on UI accessibility at Blizzard understand what is important and helpful to some specific disabilities.
Edit:
I dont want people to think I’m pushing for their game to be ruined, I know some people who never used addons and they will have a much better time with the incoming changes.
I just know that Blizzard are expanding the UI editing features along with the addon changes, so I wanted to explain what can be useful in specific cases:
The ability to change shapes, colours, and placement on the most granular level possible; or even better, use your own textures.
