So I’m really into achievements and I had a question on what happens to achievements once a new expansion launches.
Do some achievements get deleted? Once the player base on an expansion decreases, it becomes impossible to get those achievements (until maybe the legacy buff gets added).
A few achievements get moved to Legacy or Feats of Strength, but only a few.
None of them actually disappear.
Anything that is not available in the new expansion will be moved - for example, Ahead of the Curve and Cutting Edge for each raid is moved when the Tier is complete.
This time, Mad World will be moved, I know, as well as the usual Ahead of the Curve and Cutting Edge for N’Zoth, but the vast majority will stay where they are.
Achievements you earned that become unobtainable in a new patch/expansion are moved to a different tab but will never disappear from your profile.
For example, achievements related to First Aid were moved to the legacy tab when the profession was removed in BFA.
Obviously any achievements relating to getting to any level above 60 will disappear and be replaced by newly worded ones relating to the new level mechanics.
Feat of Strength can be obtained but not legacy.
Some FoS that are current will move to Legacy like the curve achievement for killing N’Zoth. There are various guides on Wowhead and the above Blizzard link telling you exactly which achievements will be removed and made legacy.
Thanks for your answers guys.
Just out of curiosity: how about warfronts?
Will they be moved to Legacy (or Feats of Strength)? Will it be impossible to get these achievements anymore?
You’ll be able to get the warfront achievements. Only Mad World, Phenomenal Cosmic Power, Hertz Locker, Keystone Master, Rated PvP and Curve/Cutting Edge achievements are getting removed.
I learned to treat achievements that become unobtainable as non-achievements. I no longer go out of my way to get them before they go, in fact I do the reverse and wait on some particularly annoying achievements just to see if they survive the move to the next expansion. If they do not, great, less annoyances on my list of things to complete.
Same with mounts / pets / everything else.
I find my blood pressure levels significantly better after adopting this attitude and the gameplay experience much more fun.
